These "Science Will Let Us Live Forever" articles always remind me of Don Henley's song Building the Perfect Beast. The last two lines point out a practical problem caused by pinching off the Circle of Life...
We're building the Perfect Beast
(Building, Building)
Ever since we crawled out of the ocean
and stood upright on the land
There are some things that we just don't
understand:
Relieve all pain and suffering
and lift us out of the dark Turn us all into Methuselah-
But where are we gonna park?
And let's not forget Amtrak's origin. In the 1970s, there were several (2? 3?, I forget) rail lines going bankrupt. The US Government felt that loosing the rail service would be a Bad Thing(tm), so they bought those rail lines and renamed them AmTrak.
I think AmTrak has done pretty well for a bail-out. I do wish the government would encourage more rail travel, but that's more in the social engineering department.
Please alert the media to this philosophy. They seem to spend a large amount of time crying over the civilians that were killed when the US forces take out an enemy safe house. A safe house that contributed to increased US casualities and increased time in Iraq.
Now my brain hurts. After reading these posts, I have a vivid mental picture of Julie Andrews and Tom Cruise driving a race car through the Alps to escape Nazis. They accidentally collide with the Ark of the Covenant and are sent back in time where they accidentally win the Cro-Magnon Indy 5[*]. The resulting time ripples ensure that Jeff Gordon becomes a World Champion Horse Jockey in a world where monkeys have evolved from horses.

I won't argue that nibble is accepted now. I was simply pointing out that the 'y' spelling has been in use. You could even argue that the 'y' spelling makes more sense, since there is a certain symmetry between byte and nybble.
Truth be told, I always thought nybble was too cute to be a computer term. "Hex digit" sounds more professional.
Check out the Apple ][+ reference manual. That was the first place I ever saw the term. There are nybbles all over the place.
Of course, that manual also uses the dollar sign to indicate hexadecimal numbers. After a year of trying to explain that terminology to my college profs, I gave up and started using "0x".
You might as well ask if Annakin can be prevented from turning to the Dark Side(tm).
End of Oil: That was scheduled for the 1990s

I was on my High School Debate team in the late-1970s. The topic for one year concerned energy. For each debate, the Affirmative team argued the US must seek other forms of energy. The Negative (Status Quo) team had to rebut the argument by showing that there was no problem staying with petroleum fuels.
I argued both sides of the issue that year. I will never forget the vast quantities of evidence presented showing how the Earth would be completely without oil by the 1990s -- at the latest.
I know it will eventually happen, but that experience has given me a jaded eye toward all those folks who shout "The sky Is falling!" when they talk about energy.
I realize this is a rhetorical question (and my answer is Off-Topic), but my son just finished reading a book on how to invent a word. Check out Frindle by Andrew Clements.
I fully agree with the theory. But you don't know the guy would have paid $95. All you see is that he got the item for one lousy dollar more than you bid. It's downright angrifying.
A friend once mentioned the idea that no auction should close until one hour after the last bid is made. Seems fair to me, give the other bidders time to re-evalutate this new information and react. I'm sure there are downsides to this scheme, but I haven't heard anyone discussing them.
All I know about Bush is I had a job when Clinton was president.
You were 4 years younger too. Should you blame aging on Bush? Go to Google (or Wikipedia) and look up the logical fallacy called "post hoc ergo propter hoc"

Seriously, does anyone believe this movie received the Palm d'Or on its merits? The judges at Cannes were making a slap at Bush, nothing more.

I dunno... Darth Maulette just doesn't do it for me.

That's easy. He parks it diagonally across the last few spaces in the parking lot!
The difference between theory and practice is, in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.
This would be exactly what Apple did with Darwin (Open Source) and Aqua (closed source).

A Safety Dance? Hold onto your hats!.
Should I be scared that my first thought was an image of a nerdy math-type hunched over an HP calculator and unleasing PI=2.7 on the internet.

I'm sorry. I'm addicted to this kind of thing.
These jokes have all made the CIRCUIT before ... I'm POSITIVE about that.
Now, now. Those aren't even proper "Keep Left" signs. And he's not a proper Vicar -- his hair's too long. Off with you now.

You wouldn't phrase it that way if you worked for the company that makes "Kool Aid(tm)" :)
It sounds interesting, but I'll wait until I can hook up the modified blaster and play Duck Hunt.
So he should have said apples and lemons?
