Wow! You updated the kernel without a reboot? You are teh g0d!
Ok, not quite that good. In Linux the kernel is just about the only thing you have to upgrade for (if its a safe module to unload you may be able to update that with out a reboot). Using windows update you'll get a reboot once every few months. Having a service go down is a different story.
If you can not have any downtime (even due to a reboot) get a fall over cluster, or something that resembles big iron.
Also (and this is an honest question, I have no idea what the answer is), is the truly the "Unix way" to "duplicate your production environment on the sysadmin's workstation and debug any processes to be applied to production there before proceeding?" Is that even possible?
Yes it is possible under many circumstances.... Your desktop has to fit close to the hard drive, memory, and processor requirements. If your database takes up a gig of ram, dont expect it to work good on a desktop with 256MB.
I copy the linux install from the server computer to the desktop computer and enable it to boot and setup the directories correctly. After that its as simple as compiling/installing the new software and running it. Load testing and border conditions are the hardest to test. After that I copy the install packages (normally rpms in my case) to the server and install them under low usage times.
Is there something like 'strace' for windows?, I have fixed problems countless times with that in Linux.
I am a paid Linux consultand/admin. If I would have read what they wanted me to do... I would have said no. Methodology in supporting a linux server is all wrong. Still one admin mangaged to pull it off. He probably didnt fully follow there rules.
I've mangaged to live update a server with Fedora core 1 all the way through each core release till 4 and kept it live and running.
Sad thing is with most software these days, the new beta is on the same stability level as the previous product. Not always the case as I've tested some unstable beta software, but as where the case, I dont think Windows 95 was ever 'not' beta.
Damages, its hard to know who to blame when you are confronted with hidden opponent. People were unaware of what was causing the blue screen that stopped the computer from booting and reformatted, why because the problem was a HIDDEN ROOTKIT. The tech probably blamed Microsoft (who by the way, is an easy target in this case), instead of blaming the real culprit, Sony. Its like trying to find a sniper.
Once the first case of damages shows up, im sure many many more will follow.
I for one am sick of subsidizing their behavior in my overloaded insurance premiums.
Please dont make me laugh like that, how ever do you think that the insurance companies are going to lower rates. When have they ever done so on a broad scale? They are going to take more profit, espicallaly now that its illegal to even have a car in a garage without insurace.
A goverment with unchecked, uncontrolled power is far more dangerous than any individual can ever be. Unfortunatly many will find this out much too late.
Not dumping CO2 into the atmosphere is definitely within our control.
If you can figure out how to do this without starving about 5 billion people to death then my hats off to you.
Maybe the situation is out of control. No other cheap, easy to use, high enegry sources are popping up. All other enegry sources now have serious transportation, avaliablity, or waste problems.
Loose canon? For what, making the construction companies follow the law! Maybe I missed the part where she made false claims about the contractors, or created false evidence.
Maybe you should read the cache of the site to see what it has to say. I would expect more form a low uid.
- Image streaming from your eyes, photography, movies like in one of William Gibson's books, i think it was Monal Lisa Overdrive, you wouldn't need to be an artist to recreate an image you have in your mind.
Please explain how you would uninstall the SonyBMG DRM root kit then!
Epox, Asus, Abit have all had bad caps on a few boards for me. Not exactly wide spread, I'll have 3 or 4 of the same board and only one will fail. But its something I've noticed with about every manufacture so far. Manufactures so far have been excellent on RMA'ing the product quickly.
On our systems with UPS's this seems to happen less often, my guess is the cleaner power puts less stress on the board.
Geee, people would have to make sure there not investing in morally bankrupt vampires. That would be the end of society and business wouldn't it.
Remember kids, investment at all costs, human or environmental.
This may come off like a troll post, but then again, im not installing rootkits on tens of thousands of computers either, if this is the kind of behavior that people will come to expect from LLC's then expect a backlash.
You do, I do. Do you think the 'state' just pulled the property laws out of there collective ass (ok for some states i'll say yes). Most of Texas current property laws are an extension of 'natural' property laws.
Texas tresspass laws are great. If you tresspass on my property, you have the legal right to leave in a body bag. Not the states force, my own.
No, so they dont have to buy an apple machine. I personally would have no problem paying apple for a copy of OSX (ohsucks as i otherwise call it), It just seems highly unlikely that they will sell copies for regular PC's.
--
My other computer is your windows box, your apple, and your linux server, I'm trying to get your VAX but this has proven excedingly difficult.
Already did, I emailed all the companies I contract for and stated that Audio CD's should no longer be used in company computers, and also stated why.
Funny thing is, a few users emailed me back and asked if cds they burnt themselves would have this issue... I stated they should not, but that you should not use cds burnt at home on work computers, but on there home computers it would be just fine.
I dont think this is the reaction sony would want from this.
nstability issues are rampant because AMD CPUs are so picky about the type of RAM used. My company is constantly having to order more expensive single-ranked RAM modules to solve banking limitations of the CPU memory controller, machine check errors, and ECC corrections.
Most mainboards have memory compatabilty charts, follow them and your life will be eaiser. Though I do recommend running a 24 hour burn in memtest on any new server, can find bad ram before it goes in to production.
I have had exactly 0 Opteron processor or mainboard failures. Maybe you should reevaluate the boards your using.
If you eat the seed, you cant plant the seed. Ever heard of having your cake and eating it too. I guess you've never heard of a hand to mouth economy, you never get any where. The first step is growing more then you and your family eat for yourself. The next step is distribution. Then you have to have the market to sell it at.
Then again, maybe you should just give up your computer, and every thing else modern, and live like a pheasant from 10,000 years ago, seems fitting for you.
Then you sir, must have taken a great deal of time and care to learn nothing from history.
Lets take the time to define this 'shock' at least the one communicated here.
2a. Something that jars the mind or emotions as if with a violent unexpected blow.
3. A severe offense to one's sense of propriety or decency; an outrage.
By the definition alone, shock seems like it could be a pretty influential part of human kind.
Lets look up a recent example of shock. Oh yes, the Iraq war. Shock and awe. I guess thats trivial anyway, maybe I can find something bigger. Saddams not that important anyway
Oh yes, World War II, Hitler's blitzkrieg. "Operationally, its goal was to use indirect means, such as, mobility and shock, to render an adversary's plans irrelevant or impractical." I bet the French found this to be of importance.
Now to put the sword deep in the heart of your argument, I could write for hours about the Romans, but will instead leave with one article about the description of Roman Cavalry and let you search google on how the use of shock has shaped nations.
I bet you think you can make this world a better place for other people? You can't, many will choose to live like dogs, to your disgust. You can only make the world a better place for yourself, and hope others follow your example.
All your enemy needs to win, is the continued vote of your silence.
It doesnt matter what./ says, its matters what msnbc/foxnews/'$big media' says, they are the articles facing the impressionable idiots. We need to make enough noise to get noticed.
It was a hot year in the US in 1900 with may people dying of heat stroke, the waters in the gulf were above 90 and then a huge hurricane erupted smashing in to Galveston. No one back then railed about how we need to stop burning coal. No rallies to stop people from driving there SUV's.
Unless we drop our planet in to ice age conditions we are going to have hurricanes, thats just part of living on an eastery coast line. Armchair Envro-ecologist are addressing the wrong problem. Let me yell this to get the point across
[voice: yell]
CARBON EMISSION IS NOT THE ISSUE, BEACH AND WETLAND EROSION IS.
[/voice]
Saying this hurricane was caused by or made stronger by global warming shows your misunderstanding about the nature of mans destruction of nature. Greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is the least of our worries. Building huge levees the distance of our rivers should be a greater concern, it stops yearly flooding, but aggrivates the great floods, channeling billion of gallons of water at high speed down river. At the first weak place in one of the levees, destruction is certian.
The faster moving channeled water also carries sediment far out into the gulf, barrier wetlands and islands suffer. The wetlands subside and wash away in to the ocean, and all of the sudden you have ocean front property where you shouldn't, and that property has NO protection from storm surge.
So I recommend we keep blaming global warming, and not focusing on the real problems, so when the next natural disaster occurs we can have thousands more dead.
Um, sorry, if 'nothing' was done we'd be talking about the 100,000 dead today, maybe more. This is the secenaro that had been forseen for years. People were told to get the hell out of the city. Most that could did, may Idiots stayed that could leave, then there are tens of thousands of poor, elderly, and crackheads that dont have any means of doing so. The traffic was jammed for hours leaving the city, you've probably never been there, its a huge swamp with water on all sides, building more roads is extremely expensive, and the conservationist would go nuts if you tried to put a 10 lane highway in.
If the people didnt go to the superdome, they may be dead, there are not many places to go, I live over 250 miles away and ALL the hotels are full. Trying to bus 10,000 people in a day is a logistic nightmare. Remember they called the Superdome 'A place of last resort', that meant get out of the city now.
Now getting the people that are there out is a bigger nightmare, only one way out of the city, and if the water levels rise, it too may be cut off. If you live close and have a flat bottom boat, they may need your help over there.
Most of the dead so far have been in MS, not LA.
Your post is emotional drivel, you cant even grasp the scope of this disaster. Thousands of square miles of land has been severly affected by this storm, even with 100,000 emergency workers its going to take days to find survivors, and weeks for even the most basic clean up to get underway.
We live at the mercy of nature, when we think that we have it beaten, it shows it true power and our foolishness.

security updates? 'yum check-update' 'yum upgrade $X'
If you run Linux like Windows, expect Linux to have the problems of Windows too.
Sad thing is with most software these days, the new beta is on the same stability level as the previous product. Not always the case as I've tested some unstable beta software, but as where the case, I dont think Windows 95 was ever 'not' beta.

Britian monitors more, but on the east coast of the us of a we're catching up fast.

Never give the cops the bird then ask for your phone call. Its gets pretty freaky after that.

Who grants the natural right to property?
You do, I do. Do you think the 'state' just pulled the property laws out of there collective ass (ok for some states i'll say yes). Most of Texas current property laws are an extension of 'natural' property laws.

So they don't have to pay for OS X?
No, so they dont have to buy an apple machine. I personally would have no problem paying apple for a copy of OSX (ohsucks as i otherwise call it), It just seems highly unlikely that they will sell copies for regular PC's.

Perhaps I married TWO people, and dont want one to know about the other one!
In this would you never know why you'll want to hide something, but its nice to have the ability.

The Athlon-MP platform sucked, totally.

I would pay for a shirt that says Jack Thompson murders kittens!
Then again, maybe I'll say I'll pay for that shirt and recend my offer when someone prints it, I hear its what laywers do these days.
What is your e-mail? Since your running Acrobat 4 im going to assume windows. I have a special PDF for you :)
Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

People talk about global warming and how it can change weather, but many steadfastly refuse to look at any weather history...
