Microsoft could be right in one way, if you run your windows network perfect and fix things before they start causing problems windows TCO is pretty low. Unfortunately thats not the way most businesses work. Many administrators have had problems with windows software being fragile or picky, so they dont want to upgrade/patch/touch/look at funny when and update or security patch comes out. Then three days later a worm owns the system. In that short of period of time its hard do to enough patch testing.
TCO is just some made up number, its going to vary so widely from company to company because admins and corporate practices are different. Saying that software $Y will cost $X over $Z years without knowing how many security holes will show up, software bugs will occur, or user practices will change makes TCO more irrelevant as the time measured increases.
Summary: TCO is a Bullshit market tactic to sway PHB's with fancy buzzwords and charts.

Hmm, have you ever been to the southwestern united states. My guess is you have not, NYC is an island area, where space was short, therefor everything is built nice and close. Public transportation works great in high density areas. Here in Texas the highest density areas are closer to your medium density areas, Dallas is mostly empty space (example, find a parking place in dallas vs. a parking place in NYC). Public transportation would have a very hard time working. It would take many times more busses to get to the same number of locations here. People here dont want to be closer together, they keep building suburbs farther and farther out from the cities. Parking lots here cover the size of statiums, theres just more and more room to spread sideways.

Mining trucks need to dig up the copper, steel, and aluminium, the nasty mines are still going to be around. The chemical belching factories are going to have to refine it. Enormous assembly plants are going to have to put it together. Fuel burning trucks are going to ship them to there assemlby site.
