    Wow. You mean...like...COM?

Not everything from MS is total crap.

Regarding redudancy and bloat in MS Apps, I'm sure it is present. However apps do use common libraries (dll's), objects (via COM, ActiveX, and now .NET), and GUI widgets.

Bloat and redundancy are introduced when the common objects "just aren't good enough". Or if one vendor is trying to differentiate their software more from a competitor.

I have four different sound editing programs, 10 different graphics programs, and a slew of compilers on my system. Each category of program shares 90% of the functionality across all of them. But many do not share common libraries (or look and feel).

But where would we be if we didn't have software competition?

I bet MS knows the answer to that question.

  8. Re:And the heating system on If Bad Software Developers Built Houses... · · Score: 4, Insightful

But let's turn the tables here. Let's give the home builders the usual specs that a software developer is given.

You estimate it will take you 18 months to build the house. The "owner" comes back and says you have eight.

You say you need specific pieces of wood and nails to build the house with, however the owner tells you to use new unproven materials that don't even have effective methods of working with.

You say you need specific types of hammers, saws, cement mixers, etc. The owner says you can only use a rusty hammer with a broken claw, a dull saw, and you'll have to mix the cement by hand in a bucket to pur the foundation.

Your allowed to look at the location your going to build at, but you are not given the resources or time research the ground stability.

After you have rushed together a blue print, you're told to start. Halfway through, the owner changes the building materials, tells you that the utilities won't be there for another year, and change the complete layout of the house in the process.

In the last two weeks of frantic work, the town code person changes all the building codes.

So what kind of house do you get after this?

    You don't.

And that's how a lot of software comes out.

At grade school level, calculators could be looked upon as a black-box. They know how to input and get the output.

But the kids do not know what goes on inside the black-box. They have set and get methods to access the data, but lack the understanding.

Therefore, a child does not "know" multiplication.

Along similar lines, programmers do this everyday. They may not know the algorithm for MPEG4, but they can use a library to access the data and manipulate it they way they want.

The big difference here is that basic math is a fundamental life skill, while knowing the MPEG4 algorithm is not.

In life, there are some things that should be learned the hard way (for some, it is the only way they learn). Other things do not need to be.

I wouldn't expect any random person I meet to be able to implent the MPEG4 codec, but I would expect them to be able to tell me what 10x10 is.
