  2. Better than I thought it would be on ASCII World Cup · · Score: 3, Interesting

I tried it yesterday. When I first connected I had an ASCII plan view of a football pitch, so I was expecting an "O" to appear for the ball and move about during the game.

It wasn't that at all. It was the live picture converted to ASCII. It was impossible to see what was going on when it had a wide shot of the field (i.e. most of the time), but when it cut to a close up, you could quite easily make out the people moving around. You could also see the on-screen captions appear.

Totally useless, but brilliant in a geeky way :-)

BTW, games start at 14:00, 17:00 and 20:00 BST (I'll let you convert that to your own time).

I'm from the UK, and for about the last 10 years I've been muting the adverts every time they come on mainly because of the volume. I hate adverts and have never watched them since the late 80's. I have always either switched channels, or left the room, muted, checked the internet, read a magazine etc.

The stupidity of them is insulting. I was told to watch CNN (which I was told I probably get through NTLs cable package) to see how strange it was. I found it and saw the funniest advert I've ever seen in my life. It went something like this:

The essence of life is laughter,
the essence of laughter is love,
the essence of love is lemons.

    Yes lemons! Said seriously.

I actually fell off the sofa laughing. I wish I'd taped it. I don't even know what it was advertising (lemons I guess) as I was in shock/dis-belief/histerics for the rest of it and several minutes after.

Anyone know if it's available for download?

Well, I didn't take much interest in Nintendo's E3 info because they have already alienated me with the kiddie games of past years, but if indeed they are goind to have lots of Mario-free games (and hopefully some more adult games) then I would consider getting one. I'll have to see what happens after release.

I was just commenting on the impression I get from Nintendo consoles. My opinion wasn't based on fact, just the feeling I get every time I see an advert for a Nintendo product and when people talk about it. I guess it's a marketing choice, but it's not targetted at me, so I probably get the wrong impression.

When I worked with VT terminals I remember the screen used to completely freak out when a mobile phone rang, and the speakers on my PC would start buzzing. I was amazed that this was allowed, and still am.

I'm not sure what time it was supposed to happen, but I think it was the time I was playing the best games I'd ever seen and they were loads of them coming out all the time. I had a Vic-20, and C64 from about 84 until Sept 87. I only heard about this crash about 5 years ago and I didn't know what people were talking about.

And as for the NES saving us all! HA! I've never even SEEN one in real life (apart from probably in a shop or a computer show/museum under glass). I don't know of a single person who had one and I can't remember anyone ever mentioning playing on one. I'm sure someone I know had one (or played on one), but it's never some up in conversation. The C64, Spectrum, Amiga and even Dragon 32 have all been mentioned several times by people I know, but never an NES (or SNES for that matter).

If we have another "crash" that affects me in the same way as the last one, then it will be the second "golden age of gaming" for me!

I would buy Opera in a second, if it was £5. Other browsers are free, but I like Opera. There is almost nothing worse about the free version (I lose 9mm of screen across the top where the ad strip is). I can't justify spending $40 on it just for that. They provide a free version. There is nothing wrong with using that and I don't think I need to defend using it.

As for the sig. I have seen other people put things like that in a sig, and I have clicked on them. I don't know these people, but I thought I would help them. You say it doesn't help the company. Of course it does. It gets 250 people to click on a link that shows them the Opera website. It spreads the word. Some people might actually download it while they are there. What does it matter if people from a website visit click on it, or people from a forum? 250 people are still looking at the site. That's doing more good to Opera than if I got Firefox and didn't get 250 people to look at anything.

Thank you to the people who have clicked on the link. I'll do the same for you if I see something similar. I might even be interested in the product and download/buy it.

I didn't want to put a post about Opera as that has nothing to do with my original post (apart from a one line sig), but I thought I should reply to your flamebait. I know you were waiting for a reply, Mr. Anonymous Coward.

I still don't know if I will go and see it. I am a big fan, so I HAVE to see it, but I also think it will be terrible and I don't want to encourage people to do this sort of thing (and pay them at the same time), so I SHOULDN'T see it. Being a fan is hard some days...

The optimum usefulness/price balance, rather than just "give me the cheap one". Sometimes the cheap one IS the best, but I would never just get something BECAUSE is was the cheapest. I got a C64 (instead of a Spectrum), an Amiga (instead of an ST), a Betamax (instead of VHS), a widescreen TV (instead of a 3:4 one), surround sound (instead of stereo), Opera web browser (instead of IE), etc.
