Same here. It's a smart thing to do if you eventually become a successful company too. It just makes their programmers reliant on only one platform hence, crappy programmers.
I was in a foul mood last night after not being able to fix a Microsoft Word on Mac problem where Word has the inability to properly edit text in Chinese using Chinese character sets.
No but it's assumed in most cases. If you buy a vacuum cleaner, you expect a working belt to come with it. You buy a fax machine, you expect a reasonable amount of toner to come with it.
It really is a smart way that MS is trying to catch the unscrupulous dealers but shitting on potential customers is just plain wrong.
It's like buying flood insurance for you house and your house floods and they don't cut a check for you.
Yeah. It is "jump through hoops". It's showing Microsoft your receipt everytime you want more software from them. Would you like to show DVD Distributor your receipt everytime you want to watch a DVD on your DVD player?
There is no apt-get equivalent for Windows either. apt-get Office 2003 euivalent is jumping through hoops and getting a tatoo that says I love Bill on your backside.
I think so. There are the Yahoo webmail users that won't and there are the Outlook (Express) users that know their settings and where to change them.
Yeah, Thunderbird has better Spam filters, more secure but it doesn't use Plaxo like O(E) (and yes, people do use Plaxo and it annoys the crap outta me). It doesn't sync with their PDA just the way they're used to. I tell you what though, users who have had problems with Outlook Express will gladly switch to Thunderbird especially after a corrupt mail store or WAB.
I've tutored a few of those on the concept of layers with Gimp. Once they get that, they're pretty much set
Yup. People won't care. People who did care enough have stoopped using IE though.
You could get them into the 'free' aspect of it by showing them Open Office and Gimp. Gimp will be the most useful for Mary Jane and Brad who want to make a collage of their kids.
Most browsers are free so that won't woo them and most desk jockeys use IE for the games that sites like Popcap has that are IE only (recent ones)
Yeah. I like how that scratch pad really gets in the way of what I want to look at. An those giant numbers on the target are much less obtrusive than the translucent + sign.
My point wasn't on the validity of the R&D of a space pen. It's the fact that a Microsoft VP 'guarantees' that a pencil won't write underwater when in fact it will write and quite well, well below 100 feet.
To me, it shows Microsoft's arrogance that no matter what the facts are, "we're" better and we'll have the best solution attitude is far from what the best solution actually is.
There was an article about MS vs Linux and a comparison about the cost and R&D of the space pen that can write upside down and under water for NASA the the fact that the Russians used pencils for the same task.
When the cost came about, some Microsoft VP stated "but you can't use a pencil underwater, I guarantee that!".
Yeah. Tell that to all of the scuba divers around the world Microsoft.
I've seen the same thing. Some (or maybe most) PhD's think they're above common folk and expect that just because they've worked hard in the academic system that they should have it easy for the rest of their life.
Well, BS. Getting a PhD or any degree for that matter is a matter of time (and money). It's the same as a prison sentence. Do your time and do what you're told and you'll get a prize at the end of your tenure.
Granted there are exceptional people with several degrees (PhD's included) that truly love what they do and are infectious to be around for the knowledge bandwagon. Those are the people who will cook at barbeques and clean a snotty kid without thinking of themselves.
There are movies you can geek out to (like LOTR, Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Spider-man, Batman, etc...) and there are movies you can veg out to (Star Wars, Michael Bay movies, Patrick Swayze movies, etc...)
Just check your brain out and grasp whatever you get. You'll kinda look like Keir Dullea in 2001 during his journey.
Kids also need to get in the habit of writing letters. It gets their thoughts out on paper where they can review it and think about the message they're trying to get across.
It's become an "everybody gets a trophy" society
I like in "The Incredibles" where Bob says angrily that today's schools find a way to celebrate mediocrity. Truly the reason that dodge ball is no longer played on most of the schools today.
When I was in elementary school, most books lasted 4+ years. In fact, I can't ever remember having a book that lasted only 1 year. There was the student name panel on the inside of the front cover where the current student had to write his/her name and teacher. There were kids who got the same books that their older siblings used that were 2 to 4 years older.
Same here. It's a smart thing to do if you eventually become a successful company too.

or they have crappy managers over their programmers or crappy directors over their managers.
They can't write decent cross platform applications period.
Agreed.

I hate Microsoft because their products suck
Functionality of the web page implies legible and comprehensible content to the end user.

What pray tell does " " mean in plain english?

Basically punishing unknowing customers with a whitebox setup from an unscrupulous dealer. What a way to treat customers.

Transfromers have nothing on Go Rangers I used to watch in the 70's in Hawaii.
They did it first.

What's to stop Dell from shipping an Ubuntu Live CD with every box they sell?
CD duplication cost?
Hell, that wouldn't be as bad as AOL.

But you have to pick and choose in a non-intuitive way.
Expose is easiest followed by Alt-Tab.
Don't forget that Fisher Price Pixelvision thing in the early 90's that allowed personal video to be recorded on audio tape.
