    I am somewhat surprised there isn't a manned research station though... I would think there would be a lot of scientists interested in staying there in a relatively comfortable lab for an extended period of time.

    I don't think so. This contest called for lossless data compression. MP3 (and JPEG, etc etc) compression is lossy.

    I agree with you, but leave off slavery. The USA was the only country that had a civil war "over slavery" (it wasn't about slavery). Every other country settled the debate without bloodshed.

    Who remembers the game Starship Titanic? It was a spinoff from the Hitchhiker's Guide universe. The AI with the bots was remarkable for its time. The graphics weren't too shabby either.

    I had an experience with this kind of thing just today. My music education class is taking a short detour into technology use in the classroom for the next couple of weeks. I was happily surprised to note that one of the prominent examples of music software to use was Audacity. The link was in big bold letters on the handout: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

    Think of it this way. If the differences between male and female humans were arbitrarily decided by society, then how is it that every separate human culture on earth arrived at a similar result?

    Not true. Margaret Mead, a pioneer in American anthropology, wrote few books on the matter. One was Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935). She studied the gender roles among three native groups in Papua New Guinea. Her findings:
    • Arapesh - Males and females alike "gentle, responsive, and cooperative."
    • Mundugumor - Both males and females "violent and aggressive, seeking power and position."
    • Tchambuli - Distinct gender roles, women being "dominant, impersonal, and managerial" and men being "less responsible and more emotionally dependent."
