Anyone with half a brain would pick classist, because it actually has some relevance. (I suppose race sometimes has relevance, but only as a coincidental overlap with class) It's been "proven" that Mac users are smarter, and the most significant reason is that because they tend to be more expensive, and not as affordable to people without higher education. The same could apply here: people with miniscule budgets are going to be, on average, less intelligent than those with bigger ones. [insert penis joke here] ....except for the fact that the entire *economy* in Asia is much more crappy than in places like the US. So even the really smart ones will have a hard time affording a more expensive version. So Microsoft really doesn't have a "pick" - they're being pretty racist here.

  16. Re:Not everyone wants a multi purpose device on Sony's $700 Linux-based Remote Control · · Score: 1

I know there are people with way too much money to throw around who would pay $700 for a badass remote. My point was that I could do all that on the Clie that cost me $180 (new) about five years ago - or, of course, not do all that if they felt compelled not to. A year later, there was a Clie for the same price with a more powerful IR transmitter and built-in remote software, designed for use as a remote. (Mine had a pretty short range and required third party software.)

I can't understand the logic of this device. "OK, you know that PDA-as-a-remote idea? That didn't fly too well four years ago." "I know! Let's triple the price, repackage it, and market it as a remote control! We can't lose!"

I think someone let the morons loose at Sony. First their HD Walkman (which has managed to lose to even the iPod in gig-per-buck field), now this... *shakes head slowly*

  17. ....a remote? on Sony's $700 Linux-based Remote Control · · Score: 3, Funny

The poster mentioned this was more powerful than his iPaq. Why the hell would Sony offer this (expecting it to be a success?) and not brand it as a PDA? Their Clie's offered remote-control functionality - in addition to being a PDA - and costed a whole lot less than this thing.

So the gut reaction turns out to be right - $700 for a fucking remote?

You act like that's unique to "all these free GB mail accounts". Fact is, five years ago, did you have any idea how long your 5 mailboxes were going to last? Unless you're paying out the ear, there's always pretty much the same chance that one email provider will be around in 5 years as another.

(I'm in the same boat, by the way - I've had one DSL email account for about 4 years, and though it gets ridiculous amounts of spam, Mail.app manages to filter it with close to zero errors.)

that said... As the OP pointed out, it IS google. Considering a) how much effort they are putting into GMail, b) how popular GMail, even in beta, has been, and c) the stability of Google, I personally have a very high confidence in GMail's longevity.

Microsoft's tilt wheels are slightly analog - that is, they don't click, and the units at which they trigger scrolling seem much smaller. I find that for UI's (particularly iwth OS X's smooth scrolling), it's a fantastic device. (I don't use mine, though, because the trackpad is too damn convenient.)

The problem, though, is games. Every FPS in existence is tuned to a clicky wheel (often for changing weapons), and since MS doesn't seem to let you remap the left and right tilt to a weapons change, these make terrible gaming mice.

  23. Re:15gb on iPod Generation 4 Released · · Score: 1

I don't like the terminology they chose to use: they didn't really drop the price $100, they just bumped the capacity up to the next model. The $299 model still doesn't include things like the dock connector. And of course, if they really dropped the price, there should be a $199 model now. THAT would've kicked larged amounts of ass....
