  1. TV download on US ISPs Become 'Copyright Cops' July 12th · · Score: 1

Most of the content that I download is TV shows that I already pay for, I just don't want to watch them at the times that they air. Most of them are also not "On-Demand". I certainly don't want to watch them in some crappy web-based format that buffers every 10 seconds for 800x600 resolution. That leaves downloading them in High-def. I can get them in under 10 minutes and watch them whenever I want.

The slight difference in percentages really surprised me. Somehow I expected better of the private sector.

I have seen quite a few "Government" built software applications. 40% of the time it is a single person or kid just out of college with no or not much experience that works in that group and was asked to create it because they have programming experience on their resume. Another 40% of the time it is someone who bid low on it and is frantically posting to forums and groups asking for help with their work because they really don't know what they are doing. With these first two you can also add in that the application was created in DOS and now runs in a emulator on a winME system.

It looks like the remaining 15-20% may actually know what they are doing.

I Think you make a great point for military use. The issue is that local police get their hands on all of this equipment thanks to SWAT and other such programs.

The military is much better trained for these types of situations, they have been in actual combat and (mostly) know the difference in situations that call for deadly force or not.

The local police just like to use whatever toys they are given. What I have seen from local police training is: "Here is your mace/tazer/peppper spray, let me zap/spray you with it once so you know how it works... go have fun". It should be ingrained in them that you only use these where you would previously have had to pull your gun. I have volunteered at a few police departments and have seen this personally.

  8. Inaccurate mess on SFPD Breathalyzer Mistake Puts Hundreds of DUI Convictions In Doubt · · Score: 1

Breathalyzers have quite a few inherent issues, i feel. The first and foremost is that they use some formula to blanket determine the "too drunk to be driving" limit for all people. There is such a thing as functional tolerance with alcohol.

The second thing is that the formula takes the "breath alcohol to blood alcohol ratio" to determine BAC. Perhaps I am being naive here, but what if some alcohol comes out of your mouth and goes into the device... wouldn't that result in a much higher reading?

But mainly I feel that I shouldn't be charged with a crime if I haven't actually done a crime. Sure doing certain things is stupid, but unless it adversely affects someone else or their property, how is that a crime?

There are certain signs that people exhibit on certain substances, but there are also mental conditions and even caffeine that can mimic some of these signs.

I have seen people on PCP before, unless this guy did an extremely small amount, I highly doubt he ingested it. More likely he was just high on feeling what he was doing was right.

I was diagnosed at an early age with ADHD (mid 70s) and was given Ritalin. I sat and watched a wall melt for hours. After that my mother did some reading and found out that diet can have an extreme influence on this type of thing. With an elimination diet it was easy to see that there were a few large trigger items. She then only allowed me to have those in moderation (dairy and some citrus). There were other items that varied, so we had to go through the elimination process every few months. At time I would accidentally ingest something that would make me a bit crazy at the wrong moment, but I learned what to look for and how to control it. All the people I have known that have taken it from an early age turn into 4 year olds if they don't get their medication, they have have no reason or ability to train themselves on how to function without it. I find that sad.
