  1. MSN 1 Teoma 1 Vivisimo 1 Google 0 Fast 0 on MSN Search Roundup · · Score: 0

I use 4 search engines often, Teoma, alltheweb(fast), google (of course) and vivisimo (clusty).

This morning i was reading the news from The Independent ( http://www.independent.co.uk/ ) and spotted an article from a noteworthy journalist, Robert Fisk. Alas, as usual, it was premium and not available.

No problemo, I think, and type the first line into my favourite search engines. I also decided to use msn for the first time ever. Here are the results.

    Google - fail - 0 hits
    Alltheweb - fail - 0 hits
Teoma - 1 hit - perfect - straight to the article
    Vivisimo - as above
MSN - partial success - it found the same source as teoma/vivisimo but too me to the URL root, so that i was 2 clicks away

this show MSN is certainly different to the other 2, but in this case it was Bill 1 - 0 Sergy

This is perfectly reasonable. TV licencing fees in Germany and the UK go to good quality TV stations and prevent the need for any adverts all, for example, during major sporting events.

However, the difference between Germany and the UK, is that Germany has much stronger privacy laws. This means no one can actually enter your abode to check if you have a TV or not, without your permission. This leads to huge numbers of people treating the tax as optional and not paying. As such, those that pay the TV licence are subsidising those that regard it as optional.

The introduction of the internet legislation, on balance, will be much fairer to all on average. It is imho a very good thing to have channels free from adverts and it makes for a better society.

Don't be ridiculous. We all know the Event Horizon is a big space ship pilotted by Sam Neill.

Incidentally, I studied Mathematics at Caius college Cambridge under Stephen Hawking. As his students we saw him every day. He initially comes accross as a nice guy, but it eventually became clear that he disliked his students and has no time for them. In the end, we just avoided him.

We were also forced to study Quantum Mechanics, which i would call a poor man's mathematics. Not because it is hard, but because really it makes no sense, which all our other courses did. When I pointed this out to my quantum mechanics teacher she started crying.

And as for 'dark matter' - what's that all about. Come on guys - you have to do better than that. In my opinion, the problem lies with the underlying mathematics not being sufficiently rich to describe the universe. We dont even have the idea of a point particle in modern analytical mathematics (infinitely small = zero) - what chance to we have of dealing with the physics?

Furthermore, were one to get a discount on the box at time of purchase, from your average vendor, I think millions would select a cheaper OS, all other things being equal.

ROTK deserved to do brilliantly and it acomplished exactly that. Classic Hollywood at it's best and deservedly honoured in a time old tradition. It was a sensational crowd pleaser, aimed at the masses. Plenty of bangs and loud noises, a simplistic dumbed down dialog that was easily understandable and moments of forumlaic but effective humour. But did it capture the power of the original text? In my opinion - nowhere close. I would suggest that these other texts might be more suitable for PJ to adapt - Dragonlance - The Belgariad - David Gemell series - The Crystal Shard series
