However, I think in the argument of M$ Office vs. Open Office (I've used both), M$ Office is clearly the superior product. Easier to use, let system resources, etc...
Well...
I think, IMHO, the slant M$ will take on this will be to offer an either/or environment, offering a huge library of productivity services while online, and when offline, productivity can continue uninhibited, but without the overhead of maintaining service oriented functionality.
When "sync'd" to the net, users will be able to leverage that vast library of services such as communications, file sharing, document reprocessing (spell check, calc, etc...).
Think about it, what do you REALLY use the net for? Communication and sharing, perfect services candidates. What do you NOT(or not always) want to use the net for? File/data storage.
I think its too much of a strech to say that the thin client is back. Instead, I would say that a "Slender" Client (IP. 2005) is on the horizon, which, I would argue, will be better for everyone.
This whole mess just fortifies in my mind the clear lack of understanding of FOSS and licensing.
I think its time some new terminology gets added/altered/adopted to allow for a more clear description, and thereby understanding, of all the options available.

Capitalistic -> derivation of capitalizing -> "To turn something to one's advantage; benefit: capitalize on an opponent's error."
?Question? To Capitalize on "something", what is that something? Need... ok, fine.
So you are advocating capitalizing on someone else's need? Yes, your argument in favor of captalism is strong indeed...
Nonetheless, I am not arguing AGAINST Capitalism.
I am arguing AGAINST the principles (or lack of) being instilled in our children (as I live in a society of Capitalists) on the part of the government/institutions/parents of my nation.
I am arguing AGAINST the lack of concern of your fellow man
I am arguing AGAINST the 75 hour work week while the child sits in front of sponge bob, hoping that mommy or daddy remembers to bring him home his Mcdonalds dinner tonight.
I am arguing AGAINST teaching our children to "win at all costs" vs. win or lose with dignity.
I am arguing FOR teaching our children to respect their elders, their peers, pretty much everyone.
I am arguing FOR PARENTS teaching their children right from wrong, ethics, responsibility, humility, grace, and honor.
I am arguing AGAINST blaming someone else for YOUR problems.
I am arguing FOR the elevation of the individual from a mere gatherer to a more enlighted being, capable of hearing, listening, and understanding the views of others, without taking up arms when they disagree.
I am arguing AGAINST hot-headed, short-tempered, ill-informed meat heads who spout off whenever provided the opportunity, without consideration or concern of who they may offend.
If you disagree with any of these concepts, feel free. These are OPINIONS, MY OPINIONS, and I am welcomed to them, just as you are welcome to yours.
Never did I say anything about the merits or failings of any particular socio-economic system. But since you brought it up....
Yes, most social governments that exist today are corrupt, so there are few good examples. But speaking idealistically, and in the absense of corruption, a communal society would kick a capitalistic one's ass.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to even imagine such an Utopia at our current evolutionary stage. "Things" drive us, not thoughts.
Why don't we just finally admit that this capitalistic, ego-centric, self-obsessed, self-indulgent, greedy culture we have developed is just plain bad for a "social culture" and move on.
The bottom line and results are what drive our decisions on judging individuals (e.g. how many goals our little soccer stars get, how much money your changes saved the company, etc...), not how well we treat people or how much we participate in our own evolution.
Social mannerisms and forethought are not included in the curriculum of any of the schools I attended. Schools used to dedicate entire courses/semesters on "ediquette" and social conduct. When was the last time any of you attended such a course?
Read the posts here, it is evidence enough that we ALL could use some more of this.
Until we start focusing our attention on the REAL problems facing this society, NONE of the other problems (i.e. social empathy, poverty, etc..) will ever be resolved.

If you can't walk away from your current job *today* without dooming yourself, then money has made itself your master. It's time for a revolution.
Sorry, but this is just a dumb thing to say. Money is a social construct, created by people to allow for the seperation of casts of individuals. The master is those who "control" the money.
As for revolution, I totally agree, but I think that instead of me having to eat ramen every night, how about EVERYONE eats steak. Everyone eats the same steak, drives the same car, lives in the same house, and those with 5000000 foot yachts turn them in to the Red Cross to be used as mercy ships.
Not gonna happen is it...
Do NOT say that employers are responsible for YOUR retirement. What are we teaching our next generation? That is it someone else's responsibility to take care of us in our old age.
Ummm, yeah? Why is this a BAD thing?
To expect that, after having worked for 40%-60% of your entire life, slept for 30% cause you are so damn tired of from your shit job, and having about 10% of your life to actually enjoy,
that you should, at the end, find comfort in knowing that before your time ends you will actually have some peace.
Yeah, I can see how you could be so fired up. WE MUST STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
" I've run 7 businesses in the 15 years I've been in business "
I can understand how you consider yourself competent enough to give advise and provide an opinion. You build a business, hire people to run it, and then run it and them into the ground?
And Finally...
To blame employers for this VERY complex situation is ridiculous, and I believe the author is a nut job to try to let other people try to spread the responsibility on those who were not responsible.
How can you NOT hold some of the responsibilities? Sure it is complex and sure its not ALL your fault.
But forcing overtime, reducing benefits and wages, firing and hiring to force greater production, all in the name of profitability is chasing the phoenix across the plains. It will never stop.
You, and those like you, FORCE people into "being more productive" or "go the extra mile", not only to increase their position in life, but now, merely to maintain it. Perhaps you are comfortable in stating that, without work, we should all live as vagrants, I however, have not so little opinion of my fellow man.
Feels like M$ is building a custom, personal sourceforge. There are many practical applications for this.
Restore and recovery comes to mind first. With ubiquitous broadband connections, its not as big a deal to d/l full version software packages.
Or perhaps, something even cooler, a full system mirroring, online.
As useful as this would be for an individual, think how useful this would be for corporations. Disater recovery from a corporations point of view would be a no brainer.

That is, of course, until M$ jacks up the pricing once they cornered the market.
