How many poor families are paying a lot more than $300 month and still have utility bills that the cardboard house doesn't need? Plenty, I bet. I bet you are too.

Don't forget that you have to put the house on some land. Make sure to add in the cost of the land and property taxes.

  6. Fax calls in the middle of the night on Caller ID Spoofing for the Masses · · Score: 1

For some reason, someone thinks my land line is a fax machine. 2 or 3 times a month, I get a phone call in the middle of the night, which sounds like "Beep Beep Beep"

So, I hooked up a computer to receive faxes.. and got something trying to get me to invest in gold.

It was really bad one day, where my wife got 10 calls over the afternoon. She called Verizon using her cell right after the call had happened.. and they told her that they couldn't tell where the call was coming from. There is a * code to put a trace on a phone call, but of course.. it didn't work.

So, my question is this: How can the phone company not know who is calling me? Verizon's only offer was to change my phone number -- a move that they would charge me for.. and one that would make me wait 3 months to get back on the do not call registry.

    Any telco experts out there?

  7. Calling cards on Caller ID Spoofing for the Masses · · Score: 1

Some calling cards have a feature generally called 'pinless dialing', where you can set up a list of numbers. If you call from one of these numbers, you do not have to enter your PIN.

So, if you know someone who uses that, you might pay more per minute than they are paying for the calling card. :-)

Either way, pretty serious risk for people who use cards to call other countries.

  14. new flourescent bulbs on Keeping Computers (And People) Warm In Winter? · · Score: 1

I tried some of the new flourescent bulbs, after being unimpressed with the ones I tried a few years ago. The old ones took a few minutes to get to full brightness, especially when it was cool in the room.

The new ones (with QuickStart Technology, according to the package) fire up almost as quickly as an incandescent bulb. I bought a 5 pack for 10 USD. I'll be replacing my 60 watt bulbs with these as they burn out, using only 14 watts! The light is a much brighter white than the sickly yellow glow they produced several years ago.

The only down side is that I have to find a way to dispose of them when they finally die in 10 years -- they contain mercury.. so I can't just throw them out.
