  1. Poison pill from traditional media outlets? on Viral Marketing Breeding Cynicism · · Score: 1

Traditional media make their money from advertising. Along comes viral marketing, that cuts them off from their own cashflow. Who is to say they're not poisoning the ground so that advertisers will turn back to them?

In an out-of-character interview, Colbert explains his intention:

"Truthiness is tearing apart our country, and I don't mean the argument over who came up with the word...

It used to be, everyone was entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. But that's not the case anymore. Facts matter not at all. Perception is everything. It's certainty. People love the President because he's certain of his choices as a leader, even if the facts that back him up don't seem to exist. It's the fact that he's certain that is very appealing to a certain section of the country. I really feel a dichotomy in the American populace. What is important? What you want to be true, or what is true?...

Truthiness is 'What I say is right, and [nothing] anyone else says could possibly be true.' It's not only that I feel it to be true, but that I feel it to be true. There's not only an emotional quality, but there's a selfish quality."

I found it on wikipedia, you can too.

  22. Re:Blame Jackson? on Peter Jackson Will Not Be Making The Hobbit · · Score: 1

The prequel and "the Hobbit" are two seperate things. It was always Tolkien's intention to provide the base framework of Middlearth and fill in the details later, either by himself or by a community effort. Problem was that later never came for the man, his final efforts were expended instead on resolving inconsistencies between the different stories told, at the same time altering some to create a more enjoyable outcome (which causes even more inconsistencies to resolve).
What we know to be the Silmarillion reads like the bible. It's divided into several distinct parts - each of which can be made into a series of movies by themselves. Add to that the telling of legends and stuff. When I think of a LOTR prequel I'd be going as far back as Akallabeth, not much further.

    Wow what flamebait...
first of all you don't get canings for chewing gum, that's vandalism. And actually there's stupidity involved in that one too. The guy rattled off to the international press before asking for a presidential pardon, thus burying any chance of settling the issue quietly.

You don't get jail time for chewing gum. You get... nothing actually. Selling gum is illegal, at least it used to be, FTA agreements with the US caused an exception to be made for nicotine gum. Meddling in foreign domestic policy in action...

And speaking of this FTA, I personally feel we got shafted on that one. Thanks to you Americans, filesharing in Singapore is illegal - it's not a civil issue like you guys have, you do hard time in jail for it.
