  1. Re:Um...err... NO!!!! on Predator Outdoes Kinect At Object Recognition · · Score: 1

What bugs me is that with the size and shape of the Kinect, why doesn't it use stereo cameras? A lot of design work may have gone into the thing, but it seems like a large amount of the things in it are just redundant. Extra wide wingtips. A robotic arm with only 1 degree of freedom. No mount points. I didn't take mine apart, but I'm guessing there is a lot of open air inside that casing.

When you put it that way, it is hard to see why Apple and Google simply can't get along. Their goals are different, their markets are different, they adopt different strategies and hire different types of people. Since they don't get along, or rather, don't get along anymore, I guess there must be something missing from the picture here.

  3. Re:Right sentiment, wrong execution on It's World Backup Day · · Score: 1

The thing about automated backups is, they work. For a while. And when they start to fail over and over again, you've already forgotten about them. I guess notifications are in order (for backup success, don't rely on notifications working only on failures), but in time you blank them out from your mind as well. And even if the system believes the backup to have succeeded, you never really know what exactly have you backed up, until you try a restore. So periodic restores. That's not something your average Joe is going to be able to do.

I'm inclined to believe them too. As it turns out, by giving root signing keys to Windows to despotic organizations (http://twitter.com/#!/marshray/status/29637858365022208) there is hardly a need to disable HTTPS anyway. As long as you are on a Windows computer, any SSL traffic you send can be intercepted.

It plots the relationship between autorun and malware. Interesting how Microsoft still considers this a "non-security related update", as autorun has been an easy vector with which to poison your windows installation. Important to note that autorun will still work as expected on CD and DVD media, meaning Sony Rootkits are still going to be installed on your computer.
