  1. There is a better option on Senator Calls on NASA to Service Hubble · · Score: 5, Interesting
The cost of a mission to repair and service Hubble is estimated at $2 billion. And for that money, it may or may not work. However a new Hubble, Hubble Origins Probe, can be built and launched for $1 billion using the original Hubble designs and new instruments already built as replacements for the current Hubble. It's cheaper, more reliable and less risky.

From an article in Discover Magazine

Colin Norman, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, notes that NASA has already built two expensive new instruments, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Wide Field Camera 3, for the cancelled Hubble upgrade. Instead of salvaging the current Hubble, he proposes using the parts to create a replacement, the Hubble Origins Probe.

  2. I don't feel his pain on RIAA Lawsuits from a John Doe's Perspective · · Score: 4, Insightful

    What is his complaint?

Is he upset that he got sued? That it was filed as a John Doe suit? He admits in the article he broke the law, so I don't think he has the right to complain.

Is he upset that his lawyer (whom he did not pay) did not get to speak to lawyer at the RIAA? Doesn't the RIAA have the right to handle their case the way they want do?

Is he upset they sued a lot of people at the same time as him? If it's illegal, say so and fight it. If the other people aren't guilty, let them complain. Otherwise, it sounds like an acceptable legal tactic to me.

Yes, the RIAA has done some things wrong in handling these cases. Originally, they were requesting information without a filing a suit, but they have changed that. Also, they have sued some innocent people, but the writer admits he is not one of those.

He was caught with his hand in the cookie jar and doesn't like it. Well, sorry. If he did not want to be sued and pay up he should have not violated the law. He, like everyone else, must face the consequences of their actions.

I don't like the way the RIAA is reacting to digital music, but that does not give me the right to steal music. If you don't think someone is offering their music fairly, then boycott them. That is a time-honored legal method of protesting.

Calling downloading "civil disobedience" is an insult to those, like the civil rights protesters and the protesters in Tiananmen Square, who have used civil disobedience to try to right the wrongs of society. File sharing is stealing to avoid paying the cost, not civil disobedience--it directly benefits the protester. Civil rights protesters did not directly benefit from their protests. The only thing they got was a change in the laws--the whole point of their protest..

If you steal music, then, as a law breaker, what right do you have to complain about the RIAA?

  3. Cool Edit Pro - Audition on Normalizing Music? · · Score: 1

Adobe bought the company and turned Cool Edit Pro into Audition. They dropped Cool Edit 2000. It sold for $70 or $100 with the 4 track plug-in. The audio cleanup plug-in was $50 and it was great. It could clean room noise, tape hiss, clicks, pops, etc.

The program and the plug-in did more than everything I needed. But now I'm stuck. I'd like to buy another license for it, but I can't. Audition costs $300. There is no upgrade except the $170 upgrade to Audition, more than I paid to start with. So, for now, I'll just stick with what I have.

    Are you listening, Adobe?

  4. Oops, subject is a typo on Normalizing Music? · · Score: 1

On the parent, I copied the subject from the message, rearranged it and go it wrong. I meant "That's dynamics compression, not normalization."

  5. That's not dynamics compression, not normalization on Normalizing Music? · · Score: 5, Insightful

That's not normalizing, that's dynamics compression.

Normalizing scales the entire file so that the highest sample is the highest value that can be represented. For many sound formats, this is 32768, for 15 bits. (1 bit left for the sign). This lets the sample use the full range. However, the volume of the file is based on the value of one sample.

What you want is to amplify different parts of the file so that the level of the song is more consistent. For example, sample every 1/4 second and adjust the level based on the average of that sample. A typical value might be 2:1 compression above -10 db. In this case, if the volume is above -10 db, the amount above -10 db is cut in half. -10 stays at -10, but -6 is scaled to -8, 0 to -5. (0 db is the highest value that can be represented.) There is a lot more to it, including look ahead, recovery time, multiple levels, etc.

It is similar to riding the voume control manually and turning it down for the loud parts and back up for the soft parts, but very quickly.

After dynamics adjustment, you usually normalize the sample.

I edit speech audio for my church and deal with this all the time. I use Cool Edit 2000 and it is great at this. However, it is no longer available. But most audio editing programs can do this. Try Audacity.

I called the company spamming and they "took a message". However, I was able to filter them because they were coming to a few specific random accounts, such as vxxylj@sample-domain.com and rtyylhi@sample-domain.com for example.

I could not find any other way to filter them because it seems that there are several dozen formats for bounces. That made me wish there was a standard format for bounces, or at least a standard subject line or sender address.
