  1. I wanted to choose Ubuntu on Windows vs. Ubuntu — Dell's Verdict · · Score: 1

I recently bought a Dell laptop, they are far better value for money for the Intel i-series chips. I really, really, wanted to support Ubuntu and have Ubuntu installed on the laptop - Dell wouldn't have a bar of it. They seem to only ship Ubuntu on lower spec laptops, which, IMHO, is utterly rubbish.

Actually, come to think about it, they wouldn't even UNINSTALL the anti virus software even if I paid the same price.

  5. Re:Resumes and MS Word on OpenOffice Tops 21% Market Share In Germany · · Score: 1

Sure, Open Office can export to word, and is 99% accurate when it does. But when it comes to Resumes I'm not risking 1% of formatting errors. It is my career after all.

One of the reasons they insist on word is that they feed the resumes through software that judges your resume, and creates little graphs of your skill sets.

  6. Resumes and MS Word on OpenOffice Tops 21% Market Share In Germany · · Score: 1

Being a Open Source advocate, I would like not to have MS Office at all. The main problem for me is all recruitment agents demand resumes in MS Word format. While this is ridiculous and I'm sure PDF would be fine for them, they don't budge. So with my hands being tied I begrudgingly bought MS Office for the sole purpose of creating resumes.

Yes, I know OO can export to Word format, but it's not 100% perfect - and when it comes to resumes they have to be perfect.

So the real hurdle is to change peoples mind sets to accept either MS Word, or ODF.

In NZ they are not offering a unlimited data plan, the best you can do is 500 mb's per month for $130. The good news is that it is only $130 per month now; they got dragged through the media and I think they realised their pricing was ridiculous.

If I buy the iPhone with no contract it is $1200. So the price isn't actually too bad now, but is still twice as much as the Freerunner.

But if you want another reason not to buy the iPhone, how about this:

"The upshot is that every citizen of planet earth can get the iPhone SDK at no charge, but they're contractually obligated to Apple not to discuss the SDK or exchange ideas with others. The agreements leave no room for forums, newsgroups, open source projects, tutorials, magazine articles, users' groups, or books". I full heartedly agree. But here's the problem, if they release a version of windows that looks the same as the the last version of windows, but is 500% more stable and secure they would be afraid it wouldn't sell. They are afraid that the average Jo might think "why should I buy that? It doesn't give me anything extra than my current windows".
