/and other quotations which you can remember for yourself. Actually the rest of this line is to get around the caps filter... because "it's like YELLING". (which was kind of my point up there, now wasn't it.);^)
There was a great arcade in SLC, UT (Sandy, actually), that was a nickle arcade. Everything was 1 or 2 nickles. There was a cover charge, but even that wasn't exorbitant. Granted, this was also 15 years ago, hehe.
I've often wanted to put up a multi-entertainment place near where I live. Quality bowling alley, Indoor/Outdoor putt-putt, arcade room, gaming room (for PCs and consoles). During the day, there would be a few quiet rooms for businesses to rent for video conferencing, etc. I think it would do fine in the area I chose because high trafficked with lots of shopping and hospitals in the area. It still has space since the area is also fairly new in development.
For some evidence, they did completely rework the graphics and models in the old lands. If they wanted to, they could have updated the engine. But like you said, they are targeting a very large audience - not necessarily the casual gamer, but a step up from that to the hardcore gamers.
The OS lives in RAM, perhaps they wouldn't have to reboot, but disks with similar setups can be popped in, add a link to the desktop and off you go. This is essentially what a console is.
I'd venture to say that those who are playing WoW are also likely to know about Steam and have it installed on their system. And, if the person is resourceful enough, they can even launch WoW, and other non-Steam games, from the Steam client. (Like adding a shortcut to the desktop.) I don't know if Steam collects usage stats from those types of games, but they'd be silly not to do that.
Why rebuild the Internet? Just call this Internet 3. The Internet was built with redundancy in mind. This sounds like it would be the ultimate redundant solution. My question would be how to prevent an attacker from taking out a multitude of nodes from a single point. Or, how hard will it be to return your node to the network after it has been brought down by an attack?
Ah, you're talking about Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, only instead of neighbors, it'd be all the poor in the ghettos and the middleclass not living near their exclusive ranches or in their gated communities helping the rich get richer. Or did you think their money comes from trees?
I agree with the parent AC. If Barr really didn't get the personal info of Anonymous members as Anonymous claims, why are they still continuing the attack on HBGary? Because their demands haven't been met? Their demands were fairly unreasonable, in my opinion.
In a related subject, why would Anonymous want to shout out Barr? His theories about social points revealing a person who is trying to remain anonymous is interesting, if off-base and unprovable (as his lead developer was trying to tell him). This really goes for most protestors - if you think a person is an idiot, let him speak and remove all doubt.
Now, there are some Anonymous protests that I agree with... I just don't agree with the method of some of their protests. There is a difference between criminal protests and civil disobediance. (The difference between a DDoS and front page grafitti could be an example.)
There are a few things that Microsoft does very well that the OSS world hasn't had the ability to duplicate. Excel is one. It flat out beats Calc for advanced functionality. I still use Calc. Outlook/Exchange for all the reasons the parent just detailed. I still use Thunderbird. I haven't really made an in-depth research for an OSS/FLOSS alternative for shared address books, notes, and calendars that integrate seemlessly with Thunderbird. I've seen a few that have made the attempt and haven't quite succeeded (yet), have I missed something?
I thought eBay was bad when they took 20% of every video game sales made on their site. Then I saw that Amazon.com was no better (and maybe slightly worse). And I thought, where is the competing online auction sites!
The thing about Beck is that he throws out a lot of detail. When he learns a piece of detail is not correct, he changes his position accordingly. I don't see how that is inconsistent. If you say he's clearly a Bush loving Republican because he rails on Obama, then the only inconsistency is the reasoning of that statement.
You make some interesting points. I disagree that raising taxes and more government spending actually generates more revenue and jump starts the economy long term. Some economists argue that the government spending in during the great depression actually stunted economic growth.
There is just so much waste and corruption in government and there is nothing the people can do to correct this besides elections (and as you know, most people just don't study their choices in politics). With a charity, if it is corrupt, then it can be found out and people will stop donating to it. Stop donating to the Feds and one lands in jail.
Does the welfare system need massive improvement? Yes, do we need to take away the only source of income for millions with no alternate plan, just because they are dirty poor people? If you said yes, then you said Republican. If you said no, you said democrat.
We do need to take away the only source of income for millions of people who are sucking from the government teet. Perhaps then they will get out and find a job and contribute to society. That is the alternate plan. If that is too harsh for you... check out the very large number of ways a person can get assistance to go to school, start a business, anything - and the government will also assist these low income earners with child care for going back to school or anything else.
During the 2 years of unemployment that people are receiving checks, they are making the appearance of looking for jobs, but there are documented instances of people turning down jobs because they can just get the government to pay them for doing nothing. It wasn't until the last month that a person started getting serious.
Having said that, I understand there are instances where the above is impractical (mental or physical disabilities, etc). But the person who keeps receiving a government paycheck, while ordering cable TV and full data plan cell phones is not the person we need to be subsidizing.
I would add to the above comment, that context matters. Liberty for the citizens of the US is the most important thing to America. The job of Security is the most important thing to the Federal government. It's the whole reason the States are United in America. The problem is that the States have been giving up too many rights to the Feds for many years (by one means or another).
I will agree that this system is really messed up. As others have stated, the Feds have been trying to regain total control ever since the Bill of Rights and the Constitution were signed.
I don't know what Glenn Beck said when you heard that, I'm not a long time listener.
Rich people like George Soros (not an American, but trying to influence American politics), Michael Moore, and Al Gore or rich people like Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck?
If Palin were in a position of power... interesting. The race was not Obama against Palin. We have Obama and Biden and we really are messed up. If we had McCain and Palin... ah, heck, we'd still be really messed up. The difference is McCain really does kind of know what he is doing.
If you were rich, it would be you funding the welfare spending. The problem with government spending is that there is a massive amount of waste and very little oversight. That is the advantage of charities, they are beholden to their donaters and the IRS and must count every penny. The rich, at least those on the right mostly, donate a massive amount to charities. Ask Joe Biden how much he donated in 2007.
I'm not saying the left don't give to worthwhile charities, they do. But studies have shown that religious people and conservatives donate a lot more. Even a slashdot survey from some months ago showed that many slashdotters that vote on the surveys do not give to charities.
There are far too many people who get their "NEWS" from Comedy Central. I don't think Fox News ever claims its commentary shows as news. They do have news programs, but Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, et al. are not news programs. They are the answers to the liberal "news" programs from ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN (Nightly News, 60 Minutes). Hmm, 5 liberal channels to 1 conservative channel and the 1 conservative channel is doing the "best" because it has a brand that is not diluted. Even the moderates watch the channel.
In any case, I find it amazing how the left completely misunderstand Glenn Beck. No, I'm not going to explain it here... but ask the bees. The bees know! (Yes, I know GB is a sensationalist. However, like Rush Limbaugh, those on the left are usually spouting what they've heard second hand and not actually listening to the "horse".)
Another amusing thing is that many people on slashdot already don't trust Google. But when Glenn Beck says it, he is wrong?
I worked at a company in 2000 that were using tiny atmel chips for a keyboard catch to be used on public computers (prevent certain keystrokes and such). I used a different atmel chip, programmed in basic, to run the power supply of the arcade units. It would report back to the computer different statistics and prepare the computer(s) for shutdown if building power were lost.
I really wish my uP class at the university would have used any chip like these. Instead, we were relegated to old, out-of-service Motorola 68k chips, that only sometimes worked and were really expensive to replace if they even could. And while the 68k was a fine chip, it was a pain to work with on a bread board with 150+ wires running to your memory controller, timer, power, and other parts. (Of course, in a uP class, the student should still learn about all those different parts, even if they are using an Arduino, and they should still have to deal with all the wires... but the chips we were using were atrociously unreliable.)
You've got a good point. I am thinking more of a crowded city of protesters that have been dispersed. There would be enough linkage to still make connection from one end of town to the other. One of those people are likely going to be able to get out of town or spread the via similar or other communications. Generally, though, communications outside of the town will be difficult anyway. Just remember how badly the phone lines, cell and tower, were in NYC on 9/11, or anywhere else were a natural or man-made disaster occurs.
I think this would actually be a very interesting research project for a graduate. Figure out how to string a thousand smart phones to make a wide area ad-hoc network. With a few phones with Internet connectivity.
Another advantage is that the government will not be able to shutdown the Internet. Egyptian citizens would have an ad hoc network that would still be able to communicate with each other. If the US government gets its kill switch, if the people can't vote the idiots out, then perhaps they'll have a way around the interference.
That's good to hear. I stopped recommending them back in 1998 when the pushware really was bloatware. I had hoped HP improved since Carly was booted. I suppose it has.
The easy answer: some people don't want to bother pricing, speccing, and building out their own machine. You and I aren't one of those people, but most are. They don't want to have to worry about shocking their RAM to death, slicing their motherboard lines because of an errant screwdriver slip, or a DOA hard drive.
A branded computer is almost a hassle-free, no worries computer when it arrives. In many cases, you'll have a tech on-site within a few days if a piece of hardware goes bad for at least the first year. And that copy of Windows does not cost you $100-$200, but appears free (when taking the whole purchase into account).
Same field. We're still trying to get certain software to play nice with IE7 and IE8. Therefore, IE6 is still deployed to all computers.
sorry for this...

See, it applies to both sides. heh.

I was surprised that I had to get the JRE after installing LO on Windows 7. That was just to open LO's Writer.

Besides, for your teenage kid, do you really want to hand him $250 worth of equipment to be burned up?
