This is exactly the thing that needs the most reduction. The government could probably remove a massive amount of overhead, streamline the process and save 100s of billions of dollars a year. We might actually get balanced and pay off much of the debt. Unions might say otherwise (you can't fire the guys who stand around waiting to un-bolt the computer from the desk so this other union guy can replace the broken NIC and the first guy can re-bolt the computer...)

I understand the need for documentation and specs... even some of the tight specs. But some of the requirements in government contracts are insanely ridiculous and sometimes don't even relate to the item being produced.

One is relatively easy... get on a boat and go to Antarctica. One is relatively difficult... live as just a life as possible, believing in God, and He will show Himself to you.

Read "un-patched" version of windows. Yes, MS Windows has a great firewall that lets just about everything out. There are a few applications that will allow stuff in, the firewall allows that, too (user nearly always clicks on "Allow"). One of those un-patched applications has a serious flaw, or a zero day, and the computer is hosed, firewall or not.

I agree the issue you refer to isn't that big of a deal anymore. It's been years since I've walked into a customer's home and found their WinXP SP1 computer directly connected to their DSL modem. (One that does not also contain a router with NAT and firewall.)

Hmm, after re-reading my first paragraph, I realize I am referring to something else entirely. However, suppose a flaw is found in Microsoft's firewall software. The system in question is still unpatched.
