I completely agree. The Citroen commercial, and the transformers of the 70's-80's, actually looked like cars when they transformed. I was actually very surprised when Optimus Prime transformed and somewhat looked like the original, red paint and all, despite all the other autobots looking much much different. (The new paint job on OP was pretty cool, though the stripes didn't come out after he transformed.)

And the parents thinking the boy was, ... umm, jerking off. And then when the hot chick pokes her head up fully clothed by today's standards, he was farking off. (The parents' response was completely wrong!)

Anyway, I thought the movie was great. They poke fun at GWB, but at the same time spout "The American Way" of the right to freedom for all (which is what the USA is fighting for right now for another oppressed people.) They also poke fun at, and show the ridiculousness of some of today's ways of doing things, (Internet/WWW, eBay, getting some Indian on a phone who won't understand the seriousness of a situation... except this Indian had better english, etc.)

It was great to hear all of the tag-lines that were in the original cartoons.

Starscream, you have failed me yet again!
There's more to us than meets the eye.
    Autobots, transform and rollout!
Okay, those aren't exact, and there are others throughout, it was fun.

The battle scenes were incredible, especially the end when the bots were going at it. It's the kind of thing I wish I could create and script out. Granted, there were times the camera came in too close and my bro complained about the shakiness. I wonder if ILM is trying to keep it cheaper... that is, not spend so much time in rendering so many things in a frame. They did the same thing in Pirates 3. Though, the effects are pretty cool.

The surround sound was finally correct for any movie I've seen. Sounds that I expected to be behind me, on the right, left, back a bit and to the left, etc, where were I heard them.

Finally, what about the preview for the new J.J. Abrams top secret movie Cloverfield? That looks like it's going to be pretty dang cool. (I love the proper use of silence)

If games were that important to me, I would buy a console, or two or three.

It is obvious by this statement that you don't keep up with games, which is fine. A computer is a multi-functional tool for many people. For me, I like my Morrowind and Serious Sam and Diablo 2 and Civilization and Zuma, etc. You can't play some of these games effectively, or at all, on a console. I also happen to do a lot of video and picture and audio editing. I also happen to do a bit of word processing, finances, web browsing, and e-mail on my computer. Why should I have to buy two, three, or more devices when a PC can and will do all of them for me?

Yes, I too am waiting for the Linux development of drivers and games to be written/ported. For my customers who don't play a lot of games, I give them Ubuntu.

Finally, console gaming is much different from PC gaming. It's like saying... oh, you want a computer? Just get Windows, Macintosh, or Amiga, they're all the same. (In a broad sense, yes they are the same.)

I don't know about AutoDesk, specifically, but from other slashdot discussions I've read and stories I've heard from co-workers (who've all worked for many years in the IT/Software Dev community) is that, *Yes, there are pirated copies of software being used in production environments.*

You'll find that the temptation to hold off on that $50,000 purchase for 5 licenses or get X copies for "evaluation purposes" to be pretty high. Especially, if your small start-up business is red-lining the accounting books and/or that loan/investment money is starting to run out.

I have purchased full music CDs after having first downloaded and listened to the whole thing for free. I would not, and probably will never from now on, purchase a full music CD without getting a chance to hear the whole thing (for free) first. For me, I can't justify spending $12-$20 on a product where I can't get full enjoyment of it. I've been burned a few times getting an album because I enjoyed one song and thought the rest would be similar. (In one particular case, the one song was free of foul language but all of the other songs had the "f" word in it at least once.)

  15. piracy helps society on Piracy More Serious Than Bank Robbery? · · Score: 1

I might argue that theft of IP actually stimulates innovation. I'll take a turn of the century example. If the US entrepreneurs hadn't stolen a lot of tech from Britain, there wouldn't have been as big of an industrial boom as there was in the industrial world. The reason: the knowledge would not have been in so many different creative minds to make so many improvements.

Theft of IP, while it hurts the original innovator, may benefit society in the long run because everyone will have a chance to improve upon the original. It's the same idea behind Open Source Software.

Granted, the counter argument is, if there is no protection for the original innovator, no one will innovate... but that's just stupid, people who get brilliant ideas will create... if nothing else because it improves their own life. (This is like the RIAA saying music won't be created if people keep stealing it. It'll still get created, the talent will just go into other professions and play the music for fun.)

Having said all that, it may very well be possible that the videographer was standing in a public area *not* taping the base. But then, it's all about perspective and editing and we don't get to see the whole story from the very beginning.
