OK, discussions on/. are getting more Dillbert like and un-informed by the day
What is going on here is that gcc is improving, and quickly as serious investment is now taking place
This takes many forms: (a) parsers, started as,
(f)lex + yacc|bison (parse valid source) and are
now (A) hand crafted --> better compile & run-time error messages; (b) newer technologies eg TSSA v RTL allow better generic optimisations in the middle-end, (contrary to some popular belief some
real academic work on optimization has been done since the 1980s)
(c) changes in development fashion mean that development effort is better focused, eg C++ templates+namespaces are now stable and Java now has generics as well,
(d) the run-time semantics have stabalised, and the specifications are unlikely to change in the sort term,
(e) the MPU landsacpe is clearer, and simpler, than it has been in two decades.
This all makes it easier for the compiler writers --- give it a little time to settle down and do _NOT_ chase the compiler.
No, Once again it is a recurring failure in US court procedure; in this case, the parties agreed, as is their right, to settle a civil claim for damages; my understanding, though I am not expert in state law is that the court has to consent to the compromise, make an order as to costs and deal with any other germane matters.
Like lying to the court.
The sanctions are in the order for costs, and action against the attorneys.
I really hope M$ tries this in Switzerland, Germany or the UK where any lawyer saying something like that would get his client's instructions in writing, so they, rather than he went to jail.
First let me second the view that M$' motive, must as always be questioned
But there is a system issue here, is it to encourage innovation, of to fund the PO, patent
attorneys and lawyers; if innovation the current
system is fatally flawed
It would not be hard to construct a fair system to
encourage innovation and to protect the small inventor: fees based on the (a) number of patents
already held, (b) on public prior-art challenge,
(c) require attestation of no prior-art with penalty... would all fix the problem
Since this necessary reform is not happening, presumably due to lack of political will be all the more suspect of M$ motives; they are un-ethical but NOT stupid.
As one who has been an academic and businessman, I think the MBA is overrated, it is essentially a cram course, better tought in a vocational school than a University, though it provides comfortable tenure for many. Also the very best schools have staff that manage to transcend the rather drab syllabus which could be described as the 'Idiots guide to Business'.
You really need to asses and research what you need to know and do not know; so as a CS major I would expect you to be numerate, but you might not know statistics and you do certainly need a basic understanding of statistics, law accounting and pschycology (aka marketing) to work in business.
To do that, you need to figure out what you want to do, then you can define what you need to know.
A last point, you first degree lasts 3-5 tears, a PG degree 4-7; after that it is professional reputation.
They very rarely take more than a moment and
significantly deter malfeasants; I frequently travel to Mulhouse (in France) and Konstanz Germany), Austria, Italy and
have yet to resent any control; as for closed minded most of the young guards are tri- or quadri- lingual; at Basle French, German, Italian and English. Find that in the USA or modern Germany.
Unfortunately they will be significantly relaxed by the bi-laterals with the EU
As for Banking Secrecy being the basis of the Swiss, do you ever read GDP analyses; you would do better with chocolate and pharmaceuticals
I _say_ again, only because the administration
of justice in the US legal system is broken.
Someone needs to argue "frivolous or vexatious, or abuse of process" into the Supreme Court and get
"Costs in Cause" against the looser.
The civil case load would halve in a month.
IAAL.
The poster uses the word 'objective' which is a weasle word of the main-stream-media as an alernative to 'balanced'. That is a cowardly
refusal to take a side
One of the successes of modern educators in the US has been to blur the difference between 'objective', these are the reason I believe this, here are the sources, data, references, evidence... and 'subjective' ie I believ this and feel this way...
Objective judgement is vital in a scientific, rational and well-run society.
I for one, am getting increasingly impatient of non-insigntful nay idiot posts here.
Grocklaw has been very careful to be impartial and
objective, and deserves much credit for simplyfing
the legal smoke
As one who views the gross mal-practise which happens daily in the US courts, at all levels, and which serves, uniformly to deny the people justice as a disgrace
The US Constitution, the US legal institutions, all the laws enacted by the Congress are a model to the entire world; the way the bar and the courts have beaurocratized and administer justice is a public disgrace.
You need a good Attorney General and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, at the same time, and sadly the health of the distinguished Chief Justice Renquist. is, in this case, a block to reform.
It is famously said that "Justice delayed is Justice denied."
SCO should have been in and out of court, dismissed, within a month.
The plaintiff produced NO EVIDENCE, 0, nada; still hasn't: this is normally prima facie evidence of a frivolous, vexatious or abuse of process compliant and will normally have the action struck out at first hearing before a Master (atin the UK).
As someone who has been in the industry for a long time:
This issue is in like this,
You need to understand the language, both syntax AND semantics you are using
this ranges from the simple to mind-bending e.g. C++ (I am convinced that not even Bjarne Stroustrup
understands this evil language);
at that point you have two bi-furcations (a) interpreted languages eg Java, Perl, PHP and Python -v-
(b) cpmpiled languages, and (c) finally DIY (do it your self) Assembler
So: what does it amount to in practice?
A) Rock Bottom, understand the architecture, including virtual memory, architecture and instruction set issues, read and understand the chip data sheet. Hard! See bottom line, architecture dependand code in Linux, bsd...
B) use 'gcc -S' and write the code in C, hand improve the assembler output, this is what I normally do, but you need to keep an open mind otherwise you miss things, I once took a compute intensive algorithm for the M68020 and made it run 10'000 times faster using this approach
Sadly, you are 100% wrong!
You believe, and I am sure you have been taught "Computing Science" a vast ammount of unsubstantiated junk about programming languages and development methodologies by a bunch of Academics, most of whom write 20 line programs.
In the worst case 3 line programs, 2 of which were actually written by someone else.
As someone who has spent most of my working life programming, from age 16 on the EDSAC II, let me let you into a little secret: The number of bugs in code exceeds O(n^2) for sequential code, and for non sequential it is at least O(n^5).
Finally, the shorter a program is, the more comprehensible it is!
Idiots that tell you that a coding sytem that makes you write extra code to reassure the compiler that you know what you are doing should be bound to the stone, with a quill that only writes COBOL or ADA.
Do you ever try things before you post?
PHP is really useful unless you you work for a major consultancy with a vested interest in increasing the time it takes to code anything.
Perl and PHP enable you to do simple things simply
eg PERL;
print "Hello World\n";
see the same thing in Java!
Believe me, PHP is really useful, particularly for generating dynamic HTML.
I frequently regard INSIGHTFUL here as a joke, but
if you really want a good take on this move, which if correct, indicates there is at least someone
at MS who has a clue, read:
http://www.computerbits.com/archive/2001/1000/mitt elstaedt0110.html
His predecessor, in 1425, was against the printing
press, and much as I sometimes am appaled by the
content here at leat the conributors ARE communicating
Do not underestimate the real fear the internet and all its fallout applications engenders in the traditional media, content-providers and politicians.
It is more a force for freedom, good and the rights of man than anything since the printing press, and subsequently the photo-copier.
From your post, one thing is clear, you have ABSOLUTELY no experience of what happens when government involves itself in scientific research it politicises and beaurocrtises it, forms grant committees and peer-pannels on which senior academics, who would rather politic than research sit.
They then decide on what lines of research to fund based on 40 year old prejudices.
Does anyone else wonder why, for example, the last serious advances in physics took place in the early part of the previous centuary, just before this magnificant boondogle took hold worlwide.
I really hate to speculate, but, original research is very hard, eg PhDs are these days excused, so it is __much__ easier to politic, pontificat and teach.
Nature, be it Physics or Biology exists, and will be discovered, as the parent posts, in the US or elsewhere, essentially prohibiting research, for political reasons, is vacuous.
Once discovered, the result leaks
Soft headed or soft hearted liberals should not
confuse what is ethical with their politically
correct agenda
If one of mine was threatened by a terrorist I would personnaly have no compuntion extracting the information I needed, and as anyone who has been there knows, that cannot involve torture, and when I had the information, ensure that they died, painfully, embarrassingly and very very slowly.

Right on, Absolutel correct
as an earlier poster noted we are in th 99.98 - v 0.02 percent situation here:
Spending time on the 99.98% of the code is a wase of time.
This issue is in like this,

C)consider hardware optimisation; strictly price/performance.
Then, depending on how you OWN head works use 'vi', 'emacs' or 'xeamcs' or 'nedit';
they are all free and almost never go wrong, finally, if you are an aged traditionallist you can still find teco or Bill Joy's vi, (now called nvi).
C, C#, C++, Java, Perl & PHP ..
Oracle, MySql, Postgress, Sybase, and not to forget the SleepyCat Berleley DB (incorporated in MySql) ...
what the trolls need to do is go back to Hogwarts remedial school for Trolls, mandated by the "No Trolls left behind Act".
Sadly, you are 100% wrong! What we have to hope for is that the genius behind these moves turns his attention to OEMs and large corporate users.
Do not underestimate the real fear the internet and all its fallout applications engenders in the traditional media, content-providers and politicians.
It is more a force for freedom, good and the rights of man than anything since the printing press, and subsequently the photo-copier.
Didn't you all know that the French and Germans ;-)
understand this (implementation)! Very well
I beg your pardon; this is what is the matter with /. today; knee jerk posts with absolutely no inderstanding. Read the Papers.
No, and if the teachers yook manual registers they would quickly recognize the students.
