    But the thing that really frustrates me is that everyone complains that the Mac costs too much because it has too much stuff on it, and then when stuff is taken off, the complaint is that it doesn't have enough.

    Correction, the mac costs so much because of greed. Even the top line mac has considerably less than a PC in the equivalent price range.. from *ANY* other vendor.

    If Apple would accept a smaller margin instead of those insane 20% markups, you sure as hell would see prices fall.

    Just my $0.02 :)

    No worries then, then they can appear in court in PERSON, and I will gladly pay them $100,000 for the "damages" I caused for that 1 incident, and likewise they can pay me $100,000 for EACH incident they sent me the spam.

    . Losing data once due to hard drive failure may be all that is required to convince anyone that RAID is right for them, but why wait until that happens.

    Because otherwise, you can tell them all about the wonders of RAID and all they'll do is just pretend to be interested while secreting thinking that you are some mad geek.

    Tell them about the wonders of RAID after they've been kicked in the nuts by a drive failure, and you sure as hell would be getting their whole undivided attention.

    Making the most of your effort man.. that's what it is :)

    I wonder if AMD will follow suit or try and go against the flow? Interestingly I recently acquired a Mac and have been using Mac OS X now for about a month. I like it a lot. If AMD follows suit I just may switch to Mac entirely. My old x86 machines will definitely have to be linux only if it comes to that. Right now they are all dual boot with Gentoo/WinXP.


    AMD probably will, but it won't be for quite a while I suppose.

    One difference between AMD and Intel is, while Intel is more than happy to release a new chipset for every single CPU release, AMD always try to make their solutions pin compatible.

    Short of implementing all DRM features on die (highly unlikely), I'd say freedoms from DRM may just last on AMD for so long :)

    Siemens already has a USB attachment that lets you use VoIP (skype) from your Cordless Phone.

    I'm using it now, and it works really well. One thing about using the hack in the article is your phone won't ring when you get a VoIP call... with the adapter it works just like a normal phone.

    This falls on the "acceptable security" side for me.

    What then would be unacceptable?

    It is thinking like this that would amount to a slippery slope when it comes to fighting the great (and greater) govt.

    So today it is more intrusive searches on 100% of all passengers for the sake of reducing body cavity searches for that unfortunate few, does that mean that tomorrow it'll be ok to have cameras in every single home just because "some home is harbouring terrorists"?

    I want a game that I an play in a virtual suit like that, and FEEL every damned thing, without the physical damages involved. I want to be able to reach down, "grab" a pistol, and have my glove, which has nothign in it, only allow me to close my hand so much before it actually fits the "contours" of the gun. I want to feel the "trigger-pull" resistance, and the resulting kickback of firing off a .50 caliber slug.


    What if a character in the game kicks you in the nuts?

    Responses like yours do a significant disservice to people suffering from this problem - it reinforces their irrational fears and makes them more difficult to treat in the long run. And, incidentally, the link you provided (good one) shows the current status of EMF-related health disorders - there is no conclusive evidence to suggest EMF at the levels typically encountered cause any health disorders. There are a lot of hypothesis floating around, which is all well and good, but going around scaring people to death - or at least illness - in the quest for publicity and grant money is the current fashion for asshole scientists (as opposed to the scientists that are responsible with reporting their theories and results, making sure the appropriate caveats are included, &c).


    I beg to differ. It all lies with where the cash is.

    There was "no conclusive evidence" that smoking caused cancer... for 5 decades!

    Today it is an undenable fact. There is too much cash involved to report whatever health hazards long term exposure to EMF might produce. Cell phones.. Wifi.. RFID... OMG.. the tabacco industry looks tiny in comparison.

    prisoners gave up many of their rights when they commited a crime against society - theft - murder - etc. personally i dont think a murderer should have the same rights i enjoy - though they should still be treated humanely .ie no cruel and unusual.


    Smoking crack in the leisure of your own home is not a crime against society...

    Downloading MP3s is not a crime against society...

    Crime != murder/rape ONLY...

    With more and more draconian laws being passed in the US these days, anyone has an increasing chance of being a "criminal" someday. Guilty of thought "crime" perhaps?

    Actually... no it isn't.

    Austrailian GDP: $579 billion, all of which cannot be brought to bear on this without destroying the country utterly. In fact only a VERY small portion could be bankrolled for this.

    HP Yearly Revenue: $79.9 billion
    Dell Yearly Revenue: $49.2 billion
    Microsoft Yearly Revenue: $36.8 billion
    Intel Yearly Revenue: $34.2 billion
    Apple Yearly Revenue: $8.28 billion

    Around $208.4 billion with a lot in reserves, no roads to build, no wellfare to payout, no military to support... Austrailia will loose the money game.


    Let's look at some figures shall we?

    So it is 4 bucks for each chipset.

    Now assuming they make 4 billion laptops, and for each one of these laptops, they sell a wireless router as well.

    Hence 8 billion chipsets.

    That is "Only" 32 billion dollars. Are you implying that the big 5 is going to stake all of their 208.4 billion to save this 32 billion dollars?

    Australia will still win ultimately. These 5 go bust, we pay a wee bit more taxes for a year, we take the place of these 5 shortly after.

    This Pentium4/Athlon decision makes perfect sense - if someone can afford the higher-end processor, they can afford the higher priced OS.

    No it doesn't. Considering the Pentium 4 is a.. 5 years old processor?

    Coupled with the fact that the XP starter's edition is meant to curb piracy in countries where it is rampant, and there you go. A total foobar.

    I can buy a Pentium 4 Processor for AU$150, or a rather high end A64 CPU for about AU$200. I do not need to pay A$300 for Windows XP "Normal" edition.
