Nope, it is easy to replace the firmware. But once you change the DRIVE on which the firmware with ANOTHER "IDENTICAL" drive (and clone everything over sector by sector!).
"If you're writing an OS for it, then you'll have it scanning your hardware and extracting info in a way that was not meant to be by the manufacturer/distributor (who solely intend this product to play sound files with a possible restriction -maybe not ATM but later, re-read the product EULA...- to DRM'ed stuff)."
Well, the First Sale Doctrine which appears in section 109 of the Copyright Act of 1976 states that the rights owner can not longer control the use of the copyrighted product once it's been released into the stream of general commerce.
Even if the said player is has "IP" in it, there is nothing that says I can't do whatever I deem fit to MY purchase.
I don't need anybody's permission to do anything with my property. If iRiver wishes to do something to my player, then they better seek MY permission in writing first!
I hope to see the same for iPods too. Do you guys know that if you buy a new hard drive for the store to install into your faulty ipod with a dead drive, there is nothing you can do to get it working again?
Some even hypothesize that Apple encoded something special into the firmware of the drives they buy as part of an anti-hacking measure.
I'd say to them "Go fsck yourselves!" to think that there are so many features that they did not implement, like a *real* EQ, and gapless playback, and even OGG format support, and yet their engineers have a lot of time to do stuff like these?
"I doubt a phone with a hard drive can survive that kind of abuse."
Try not to drop newer Nokias nowadays... they will turn into pixie dust before you know it.
I really think people should be more careful about the toys they get. Do you drive your SUV off the cliff? If not, why expect a phone to survive a drop from a height that is 50 times its dimensions?
Nope, they have probably developed a way to make their webcasts sound like static to users unable to play their DRM format, and apply a patent for that!
" Actually, I think the law might have exceptions for marraige, but I'm not sure."
In Singapore unnatural sex is a chargable offence. Although it hasn't come to the point where police officers kick down doors to arrest couples when one is sucking from the other:)
"Also, if it possible to extradite someone for trial in the US for pirated software, how long before the RIAA invests in a jet with prisons cells, to pick up illegal filesharers from all over the world?"
"Australia could just as easily extradite US citizens for similar offenses."
You must be kidding. When was the last time an American was extradicted for anything, let alone something like this?
That's right, never. On the other hand, when other countries do it to the US, they will whinge and throw their fists about like some cry baby, until they get their way!
I can't believe you guys are still yammering about it now.
It really DOESN'T MATTER. You guys are just sounding like the peeps who'd go "I'll vote for XXX because he is a democrat! I believe in the democrat party policy!"
End of the day, when party got elected, you think there will be a difference?
No, they will all sell you out to the big corps all the same.
Maybe all this current issues arrising from globalisation would slowly lead to a global government.
Or maybe 3 big govts (like in 1984!) where each bloc is totally self sufficient due to its sheer size, and there is no need to outsource or otherwise.
Just take a look at the trends, things are certainly moving in this direction. Like the FTAs, all those US compatible laws. Outsourcing.. free trade.. need for global laws.. what's the best solution to all these?
One global govt, one global currency, one global administration.
The coming of the "antichrist" notwithstanding, but it does seem like the way to go..
"I'm curious as to how Blackberry devices differentiate themselves"
Yeah, they look quite ordinary too.
In fact, I think they should rename themselves "RedCherry", and come up with a revolutionary user interface that comprises only of 2 red knobs......
They can even patent it and sue all the women for infringing on their IP!
"Heeeeelllp Meeeeee! Heeeeeellllp Meeee!"
*GULP*
OMG! In the future when our world population is exploding would this headline change to "Robot Eats humans to Generate Power"?
/. should tie up with some gym to get discount prices for its viewers!!!
Or even how about "Robot Eats fat humans to Generate Power"?
Damned,
>>The Secret Service bullied him into cancelling it.
>No, I dont remember this. Remind me please...with links?
Then it wouldn't be secret anymore, right?
So what if I agree with you?
I'm saying there are other things that just "changing the firmware" does not resolve.
Do Gameboys still qualify as 'boxen'?
Or should they be called 'boxen mini'?
Nope, it is easy to replace the firmware. But once you change the DRIVE on which the firmware with ANOTHER "IDENTICAL" drive (and clone everything over sector by sector!).
The iPod would cease to work.

The Rio Karma has similar hardware to the iPod but does it just fine. Supports OGG too.

" Mobloggers (voyeurs especially) could easily trade video with each other and dump it onto videotape or VCD."
OMG.. hentai-on-the-go eh?

Now, if they just put a http server in it...

Jet with prison cells?
Let me know when they have cruisers!
" Pretty much. As the provinces once answered to Rome, today they answer to Washington."
Where is Rome today?
Hint: Where will America be tomorrow?
Bread and Circuses folks, Bread and Circuses...

NO WINGS FOR ME! GIVE ME THE DRUMSTICKS!
As long as the big corps can give them their megabucks "political contributions", it is not going to change anytime soon.
On the bright side, if it gets so bad, migrate to singapore! No such crap as "political contribution!"
"100 per cent or more"
It is actually less than 0ms. The images will appear on your screen before your GPU is even done with it!
