  1. Re:iTunes Says Moo on Sirius Confirms iPod Satellite Talks · · Score: 1

Except Mel was quoted as saying he feels that eventually, every MP3 player with have Satellite Radio capabilities. For Apple it would make sense to sign an exclusive deal. Not so for SIRIUS, as it would limit their expandability in the long term. Maybe if the deal was a 2 year deal they could get away with it, because in the short term, a deal with Apple would be huge.

    Which, really, who cares?

A new file-system is something that Windows desperately needs. Or at least, a new way of storing data (much like Apple does for its apps). You don't want an app anymore - no more uninstallers ( that don't fully work) - just drop it's folder into the trash. Totally intuitive, and it works. They took a concept that would do well for the OS in WinFS, and watered it down to be nothing more than a search API layer. Big whoop.

  4. Re:The future of Windows on Windows Longhorn Beta for June Release · · Score: 1

That's why WinFS was jettisoned (along with the simple fact that the concept is damn hard to implement.)

I don't think the concept itself is THAT hard to implement - it's been done before. It's a matter of cleaning up the mess that they've made for themselves with their current installer system - letting just any app dump its garbage all over the FS. MS' largest strength and weakness is its reliance on backwards compatibility. Break what "works" now - and you'll find people jumping ship, because if they have to start over apps-wise anyway, might as well do it on a platform that isn't so frustratingly riddled with problems.

Not to come off as a flame, but you're a damn fool if you're spending any significant chunk of your time doing work for others for free.

I think it's all about weaning off of MS. Let's face it - a cold turkey jump to OSS is damn difficult for any company. But if you start working in OSS projects into the current platform, when you start migrating the users, the transition will be that less invasive.

  9. Exchange compatibility on Novell to port Evolution to Windows · · Score: 2, Interesting

..would be a point that very well could begin to erode MS's stronghold. Sure, it will keep you using Exchange for the short term. But some kind of migration tool to turn all those mbx's into openexchange or another OSS backend could make the transition on the desktop seamless.

I believe that PHP should be taken for what it was meant to be: a flexible web language. Yeah, it can also do some command line scripting, and it can be quite good at it. But just by browsing through php.net and looking at the built-in functions, you can see that it's obviously geared towards web use first and foremost. My website uses PHP exclusively, and we've been able to do some pretty amazingly interactive stuff with it, in combination with MySQL.

Most likely you and I, and a lot of people here can hear the difference between a 128kbps MP3 file and a CD, but I think you'll find that most people just don't care enough to hear/see the difference.

Searches might turn up thousands of hits, but connecting to, and downloading at a decent speed, any content I want, is by far another story. The "industry" shouldn't be able to charge for a service whose effectiveness and performance isn't determined by the entity receiving the money.

I'll bet this thing will look like you took an iBook and ripped off the bottom half. Nothing more than the screen, and maybe a little bit thicker. This could be huge, if done right.
