And then for the next millions of years (if they live that long) they rely on whatever it is that supersedes radio (gamma rays, neutrinos, gravity waves, etc). Everybody knows this. Listening for radio signals is like us watching the plains of Texas for smoke signals from a new native american tribe. Who is doing this today?
What's "unlikely" about this is the battery. That's where my BS alarms went off. They say it's 30 times smaller than today's current batteries and charges 1000 times faster. If they had that then THAT would be the headlines, not a scuba mask that creates oxygen out of thin water.
Maybe you should try a Dodge truck. My Charger downshifts without me doing anything if idle throttle results in not enough braking force down a grade. It always holds the speed to +/- 1mph. It also has adaptive cruise - the one option I appreciate the most, times 10. It really shines on a rainy night, when the guy in front hits his brakes enough to light the brake lights but not enough to slow his speed. It doesn't slow down unless he really does slow down, and without it I'd be tapping my brakes whenever I see his light up. And it's collision warning has saved me once from a fender bender, or maybe worse. I can't say enough about the software in my Charger; everything it does is just what I'd want it to do.
I won't sit in a Ford with the engine running, and in the future it seems I won't get on the highway with Ford's self driving cars on the road. I'm terrified that there's going to be some leftover Microsoft code in there somewhere (i.e., from Sync).
Now I'm sure you will choose not to believe this, but think for a minute... just how much trouble do you think Apple would be in if they are lying about this and get caught at it? Not even a stupid company would take such a chance, and Apple ain't stupid.
So what if they find fingerprints all over it? How do they go from there to creating a 3-D version of your print? The fingerprint scanner reads the ridges & valleys of your print from beneath the skin, so you won't be able to easily fool it. And, I've read that Authentec's patents (now Apple's patents) also include the ability to detect living tissue, so if that's in there too it would make it really hard to do.
And speed? You can doubt it will be fast, but a slow reader isn't something that I think Apple would ship. After all, they have a 64-bit fast processor that has nothing to do at the time but verify the print.
As for it being useful, about all it will get you right now is to unlock your phone and make purchases. That to me is useful enough (except now that I won't have to enter my password for every purchase I will risk eventually forgetting it), in the future it may be considerably more useful.
A UI refinement of iOS 6? Yes, there's that, plus 1500 new APIs.
And no, no great leaps in CPU or battery, but there is one thing: a fingerprint sensor that isn't your run-of-the-mill print reader. We'll know tomorrow, but from what I've read of Authentec's patents (now Apple's patents) this one should actually work quite well and be very hard to fool.
(And BTW, this slightly larger screen appeared a year ago in the iPhone 5.)
What's the goal of any tech company? To make money. How do they do that? They sell widgets.
You'd think that if you sold the most widgets then you'd make the most money, but that's not what's happening. So the "winner" isn't the one who sells the most but the one who is more successful in the company's prime directive: To Make Money.
Another thing. You say "get it out before Apple gets the same functionality to the public", but I'll guarantee that if you actually used both products for a bit, you'll be amazed at how the same functionality could possibly be so different.
Yeah, they can surely make them small. But with smallness comes small capacity. It should go without saying but a battery 1/10th the size of today's typical cell phone battery would only get 1/10th the talk time. So, what, 30 minutes tops?
And another thing: How would you use it to talk? Like Dick Tracy does? That's fine if you don't care about others near you hearing both sides of the conversation (and being intensely annoying to some bystanders). What do you do for a private conversation, hold it to your ear? Imagine that for a minute. It would look about as ridiculous as someone talking with a phablet.
You have any idea how much talk time you would get from a battery that can fit inside a watch? We need a few of those revolutionary battery breakthroughs that we've read about for years to happen first.

Not yet have I heard anyone mention FRAND. The patents in question are those that Samsung got incorporated into standards (essential for interoperability of cell phones) and in exchange agreed to license those patents on fair and reasonable terms. And FRAND patents being offered to Apple at 12 times what they are licensed to others, isn't exactly fair and reasonable. Unless you just hate Apple, then maybe it is.
It's only a matter of time before we rip out the internet as we know it and migrate to version 2.0.

No, you don't swipe. You just place your finger over it and it's done. It also can read in any orientation. You can "record" up to 5 fingerprints.
