yes your right it was shock, just downloaded it and played it on speculator. at 5% cpu load on this pc
still incredible I wonder what uncle clive would have made of it all
The old 8 bit systems like the spectrum really showed what could be done in 64k I tried disassembling one once first thing it did was copy code to the old specky print buffer delete this loader code move everything down a bit and then proceeded to unfold itself up the memory incredible. pretty good to watch too as the primitive hardware started doing things which just seemed impossible. It was demo's like that which got me hooked. Wish I could remember who did it all i can remember is they were Polish and the demo had full screen width lines in 100's of colours ( the specky was 8 colours + bright) and had a logo that had a kind of glassy effect in the middle of the screen.
I dont think I have seen anything since that has impressed or inspired me so much.
I like firefox it does pretty much all I want it to
I may be wrong here but didn't Microsoft lose it's court case forcing it to allow users to uninstall Internet explorer?
The reason I am asking is because 1) Any straightforward uninstall doesn't remove IE it just takes the icon of the task bar. 2) Windows update will not work without Internet explorer
ThunderBird has a problem too it will not work with webbased email accounts such as hotmail.
I know hotmail isnt great but it is isp independant and this matters to me.
I really want to throw out IE and Outlook but it looks like M$ has got me locked into having them on my windows PC's
Someone once said something along the lines that it was only because they had stood on the shoulders of giants that they had achieved so much.
Perhaps the only fair solution is to limit patients to a maximum life of 2 years, and why not do the same for copyright too?
Ok I see the point if you invent create something unique that people are prepared to pay for then you should be entitled to some reward and a patient/ copyright gives you exclusive rights for a time and the opportunity to make some money by granting you a monopoly on this but for how long should independent development be halted?
very rarely if at all does something come without development using somebody elses work and idea's.
This Post is unique and the words I choose and the order I place them is mine alone. However they start with the basis of an article on slashdot, using technology that was developed by somebody else. If I had to pay for everything i did that used somebody elses work in someway or had to check to see who's copyrights i might be infringing I wouldn't be able to do anything and niether could you!
If we want the computer industry to stagnate then lets continue the madness and copyright and patent everything and why stop there.
Short limited life patents and copyrights seem to be the only sensible solution.
Why not kick the computer to English for the duration of the install, and then switch it back?
I had a problem with my ISP the installation software refused to work on a non english install of windows.
I use and write in Polish. Windows has a habit of mangling Polish letters in read only windows unless the operating system has been installed with Polish as the default.
changing to english isn't an acceptable option for me. Why NTL's installer insists on english for windows i do not know especially since its only for their internet service.
That article has to be a fake:
What happens when you die?
to my son I leave my right hand...
What happens when you sell your cd collection to the local secondhand shop..
what happens when your sittin round with friends and it comes time to change the music..
I have to get up every time ?
what happens if your working away from home?
does your wife have to wait untill you get back from your trip...
Oh wait there is the latex finger, well I suppose you can ensure she doesn't miss you too much...
what would be the score with DJ's ?
Job security ???
who comes up with these idea's
the articles a fake isnt it ? isn't it?
unless..
1)impliment finger print scheme
2)Kill music sales entirely
3)Everybody pirates everything
4)Sue everybody for copyright infringement
Profit!
with the price of the usb keyrings being so cheap surely its worth saving your email onto one of them where ever you go in the world? The true value of hotmail is your email account is accessable anywhere.
Why not an Isp email account ? How often do you change providers?
Myself I have had accounts with demon, fci, virgin, bt, NTL tiscali... If you use the ISP's email services you have to migrate your email account a pain in the...
for me far worse than Hotmail is Outlook Express. Downloaded Email from hotmail to my PC. deleted my Email from my hotmail account. (regaining the space to recieve new messages). 15 Minutes later my Pc logs itself into hotmail and sync's outlook express with my hotmail account. DELETING my unread mail from my PC.
Is it wrong to think that hotmail is the postbox where i collect my mail and when I want to sync my mail I mean get any mail from the hotmail server that isn't already on my Pc so I can read it off line?
I am sure everyone keeps all their important mail on the mat behind the front door and any mail anywhere else, such as your desk is unimportant and should go in the trash.
I think thats when I really started to hate Microsoft.
Well there is a trap I checked out the 7 pages of release notes for this service pack its in the DRM rights management in windows media player 9.2
and no you dont get the option. according to the docs should the service pack be uninstalled you will have to reaquire your licences for your media
that you have already paid for,

unpatched machines are vunerable(more vunerable?) than patched machines. This isn't so much helping the Pirate users as its own customer base Who do have a right to complain when Microsofts actions cause their systems to go down.
The OU on some courses make the course texts available as pdf files and these have less errata in them than the printed copys.
However this compliments the paper copies rather than replaces them.
In reader you can search for key words which is invaluble whem working on TMA questions as a few seconds searching takes you to a relevent section but then I open the printed book and use that to work from.
A real book allows you to highlight key sections make notes in the margin.
The E-book also means I can work anywhere I have internet access. perhaps if i had two monitors I could put the ebook on one and work on the other
I can work with 2 computers but as many of us know its easy to type into the wrong keyboard.
having the E-book is a great help out of 3 courses I do, only 1 gives the oportunity to get the E-Book.
Outside the OU Longman does an electronic version of its dictionary on cdrom that comes with the paper copy and this again is perhaps more useful than the paper copy although not everything is included from the paper copy cross referencing is a lot simpler.
The EBook form is a definate bonus longmans dictionary is copy protected so they do not lose sales and I wish more publishers would follow their lead.
Right now I have a book on order from penguin that is taking forever to arrive. since I have already placed my order for the paper copy perhaps they could make an E Copy available for download. print on demand still means a wait of at least 4 weeks:(
by bike is interesting but by ballon may be better

WiFi On Two Wheels

In theory I have a wifi router with a range of 1000 feet. whilst reading this article I came across another one with wifi links being created by ballon. which got me thinking how big a balloon would it take to raise a wifi ariel above my house and get the 1000 feet or possibly greater range. I don't think it would need to go very high or be very big. just enough to clear the roof tops and provide a line of sight. so what do you think is it possible practicle and effective? has anyone tried this and how successful was it.
great times and a great os I still miss some of its features even with the superb graphics and processing speeds my pc's have well 1 of em at least.
Proper freeware not download it for free and find out its badly crippled shareware. My biggest gripe with google is i look for something free for a particular job and i get offered cripple ware or a commercial alternative. perhaps i should be putting open source along with what i want into google. There are some pretty strange meanings given to free these days and if anyone can come up with a way of avoiding the links to search pages results instead of a proper link I would be very greatful.
oh and and a pc equivilent to aminet with docs next to each download which you could take a look at before hitting download.
can you make the equivilent of a beowulf cluster in networking terms? lots of small bandwidth isp accounts contributing to make a huge peak flow rates and more pedestrian rates at peak times

64kb demo in an 8 meg download thats impressive

how about realvnc. to control your server remotely from your laptop. I am sure there are lots of better ways to make this work but this would.
