When I went to TTU internships were for doctors. The rest of the world hired you or they didn't. If a company couldn't afford to hire you why would you want to work for them?
Innovation isn't always about doing something new, sometimes it's about getting it right
It is not a computer - it is not general purpose. You would criticize my GPS because underneath it is really a Windows Mobile device and Magellan chose to make it only a dual purpose (GPS/MP3) device? Well I don't, because while I know I could hack it; having it do ten things at once means that when I get to the tricky sequence of turns, it might be working on the wrong process and I miss a turn. The iPad is less than a computer, and that is a virtue.
I work in an office where people routinely question the fact that I have more than two applications running - "If you run more than Outlook and one other application it crashes". Only 10% of our computer users use more than two apps concurrently. So how many apps do you think those people need to run concurrently at home?
Apple provides enough connectivity to satisfy the vast majority of users - camera, network printer, TV, and everything that can be controlled via web browser. The iPad is a product which is likely to marginalize the general purpose device you and I prefer, eventually causing home computing to be a very expensive hobby as it was when I started in 1982.
Highway hypnosis occurs when the conscious mind is not particpating in the driving activity. When you introduce compelling distractions, the issue is worse not better.
The author did say that common sense must be applied. You did not follow that requirement in your statement about ice cream or in the second link you cite. It says that after laws were passed prohibiting cell phone use that the accident rates did not drop, it concludes that laws banning cellphone use are ineffective; not that cellphone use while driving is safe. It clearly states that there is fourfold increase in injury crashes related to cellphone use and that "studies have established that phoning while driving increases crash risk" - a claim that the study does not dispute, but instead reiterates because they wanted to avoid people like you reading it and drawing the wrong conclusion.
When everybody is betting the same way, it usually means they know how the race is rigged.
Carl Sagan predicted Nuclear Winter as a result of the fires the Iraqis set in the first Gulf war, and then turned around a few years later with AWG; you don't have to be right and everybody else wrong, you just have to be a good self promoter.
The problem is the stations you used are largely urban (why would anyone bother to report the temperature in other places?). The station for Washington DC eighty years ago was in the middle of a grass field. Today the station sits in the middle of hundreds of acres of asphalt in the middle of Reagan Airport. It didn't move, it just got developed around. The temperature rise can be fully accounted for by the change in the microclimate around the reporting station. Urban centers are hotter than they were 80 years ago. Until this kind of effect is filtered out of the data, the term Global should be excluded from the conclusions reached. I am not a denier of GW, I am angnostic, something that all scientists should be on the subject.
Like a lot of posts here you had it right almost til the end - an accusation I fully expect to have leveled at me on this one.
biology and disease prevention have nothing to do with politics.
Until people politicize it - as happened with AIDS. Had AIDS been treated in a manner similar to leprosy, the cost in lives and resources would have been much lower, but we would have had to force people to do something against their will. The AIDS rights activists who demanded political action instead of allowing the medical community to act have blood on their hands.
... and the superbugs have to mate with lesser-bugs. This bleeds out the specialty features.
The bugs don't mate. The non-resistant bugs outcompete the resistant bugs because the genetic baggage attached to being resistant usually has a cost associated with metabolism.
No, of course it is not what he said; what he said was not correct about his site's placement on Bing. I did a search for the noun in his homepage's name - HIS site shows up as number 6 on Bing. His site is about things technical, but its name might make you think it was about food, and it has some funny stuff on it. I bet if we all google/bing it and then go there we can get it to the top, and maybe crash his server in the process!
Perhaps, but consider that for searches from mobile devices the variability likely drops by an order of magnitude, and Bing, I hate to admit it, delivers pretty good results when you put in queries such as restaurant near GPS location. To a restaurant owner in downtown Chicago which is more valuable, the query from the guy on his smartphone two blocks away, or the one from a guy at home on his desktop PC in the far west suburbs? The growth is in mobile search and dealing with that is a good strategy, better than playing catchup on the deep searches.
As one of those affected (afflicted?) by colorblindness I would be interested in the cure. It is a disability. I was prevented from becoming a military pilot, submariner and numerous other careers. I can't play numerous video games because I can't distinguish the colors of the playing pieces. I can't paint, though I have good technique and if you saw my work in a black and picture you might think I was not too bad. I can't sew because contrasting stitching - like green on tan or orange on brown are not considered fashionable. My selection of food is limited - I know everyone has trouble going through buffet lines figuring out what things are, but have you ever selected mashed turnips thinking they were potatoes? How about not being able to say "What a beautiful baby girl!" to someone because you can't tell if the child is wearing pink or blue? OK here's one that will get the sympathy of/.ers - imagine that you never new that Bruce Banner turned green when he turned into the Incredible Hulk? I just assumed Lou Ferigno had an iodine tan that was popular among body builders, I found this out only a few years ago. Spock was pale, Klingons were dark, but color ??
I wouldn't go for Lasik but you can sign me up for this!
Let's tally this up - Six figure salary, Drives an Audi, Lives in NYC. Yeah we are all very impressed - were you wearing an Armani suit at the time? The reason your telecommunications cost so much? You live in NYC. The reason for the shittiest service ever? You Live in NYC! The reason you got a flat? You LIVE in NYC! Do you see a pattern emerging yet? NYC is not a microcosm of the US - it is an aberration.
So you and what? three other of the govermment employees actually work? You want to know why the HOV lanes work in MD and VA? Because government employees know that they are to be at work at 8:00 and they will be leaving work at 5:00 sharp and that allows them to carpool; the rest of the white collar workers in this country routinely put in uncompensated overtime that is incompatible with carpooling.
If you take the comment as personal insult perhap you can explain how the GAO can find this level of incompetence.
The products I make are scrutinized every day and if they are found wanting, my customers will stop buying, and I go out of business - That is accountability!
I live alone and some of the ratings are meaningless for me - the most efficient front loading washing machine a few years ago, an Energy Star model that washes efficiently but has a high standby current would have used at least twice the energy as my 14 year old top loader which uses more than twice the energy to wash a load - I don't do a lot of loads in a year and the machine draws nothing while idle. Energy Star is based on 400 loads a year.
The Government has no business endorsing any product.
Which is one of the reasons for UL, FM, and other "independent" laboratories to exist. The government can do some random sampling of their tests, and have some confidence that the others were conducted in a similar manner.
Why on earth buy these articles when you can have them for free in the kindle's built in web browser?
Not all countries have Kindle with free web browsing, and not everybody even in supported countries can afford Kindle.
And how would these these people buy from Amazon.com?

So a company can pay someone to do something suitably illegal at a competitor and get the patents invalidated?
Additionally, posting a "Please stop" comment on April 1 is karma whoring. It's a +5 Insightful for what amounts to a first post.
Thanks for the tip!

1 in 40 is such a bad driver that being on the phone just doesn't matter!

You must be new here. Discussions of vaginas are strictly on a theoretical plane around here.

There is one. Does it matter which?

How much traffic as a result of your shameless self promotion?
The Google #1 result is just as self serving : http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/08/why-is-windows-so-expensive.html In which the results of the Bing search are criticized.
I hope you get royalties from Apple on that one; that's their next campaign!
