Modern hearing aids shift frequencies (usually downward, high frequencies have the most energy so you damage the short hairs in your cochlea first) to a frequency range you *can* still hear.

So if you're thinking about making your own, *please* do the proper research first. It will work better, and you will be less likely to damage your hearing further.

The 'illegal' part of this thing is nothing but a footnote.

The important thing is that it's a stupidly dangerous (to your system) piece of software, that most members of the Ubuntu community are trying to inform everyone about. A lot of community sites swear by it, and when anyone argues they give the 'it works fine for me' argument.

This is not the mentality we want to have as a linux community. The automatix team refuses to make their software better, and launced a few all-out assaults on the communities that warn against it. Even going as far as to say (on their website, up until a few months ago) if you go ask help for automatix in their IRC channel, and claim that the people in the ubuntu channel sent you there, they (automatix team) won't help you. Which is stupid in and of itself, but that's the mentality that the automatix people have exhibited time and time again.

Because of this, and in some random attempt to clear their piece of software (and argue about it's proper terminology whether 'package manager' or 'packaging script' or whatever), and to get their lead developer (arnieboy) unbanned from the ubuntu forums (for trolling, more or less), they went to the Forum Council and petitioned, the forum council rejected some stuff, and said that they shouldn't make a decision on the technical merits (since they're not technically qualified or whatever). I imagine this is the fruit of their lack-of-verdict, someone higher up (who was qualified to assess its technical merits) finally took a semi-official look.

Motorolas predictive text input is far from unusable. You tend to push about half the letters for a third of the words. Or... I do anyway. It does usually predict my input halfway through the word, but... when things are 8 letters, and I need only push four more... I usually just type the whole thing out (it's not like buttons take a while to press anyway). But even if you don't use the prediction thing, it's the same as using one keystroke per letter. With the occassional correction (for words you haven't used before, etc, I had to type in 'interblag' using 12 keystrokes the first time). The only qualm I have with it is it doesn't treat punctuation specially in the user dictionary. So when I type "what time are you coming home?" the next time it autocompletes "home" it has the question mark tacked on the end.

  20. Re:If they had to install(!) Windows ... on Why the World Is Not Ready For Linux · · Score: 1

If your goal is to install Ubuntu, and not try it out, what you really want is the 'alternate' CD, which is the old fashioned, tried and true, textmode installer. Sure, it's not as pretty, but you can do a lot more with it (RAID, other hardware stuff, install gui-less, etc), and even use it as a repository for some more software on it. You also need this CD to upgrade via apt-cd (just like downloading 6.10 from the internet via the updater, only without the package by package download). The liveCD is best for people who are still on the edge about linux, or who need a liveCD to do... whatever (although there are better liveCD centric distros out there, for everyday use, and for administration stuff). But, if you're downloading something to install, especially on more than one machine, the Alternate CD is what you want, works better, no waiting for the LiveCD to boot before installing, etc.
