even though it's not a poll. My network doesn't work well enough to break into. I can't keep my own boxes connected.
I guess the correct words are "incompetent clods" - meaning the people who made my router and my ISP.
This is obviously not your typical Slashdot story.
For one thing, no "FP" trolls.
I like to hear a little relaxed, phylosophical discussion, mixed with a blatant political statement.
And they didn't work for me. I've been having trouble sleeping for years. But I haven't tried number two. I don't think I could stop reading before bed, but I will at least turn down the brightness on my LCD. I'm not sure it will help, because my problems started shortly after I learned to read print material.
Enough rambling... will just turning down the brightness and turning of the lights help?
It is not PRACTICALLY impossible:- In fact, it would be easy. It's more a matter of politics. Getting everyone to agree and let people work is extremely hard, especially when the students are the only people prepared to do the installation.
By the way, hosef.org looks very nice. Is it your project? Do you work on it full time? I wish North Carolina had something like that. The closest think I have found is a State Education mailing list about Apple computers. And it has no activity. Funny, as NC is home to Red Hat, Inc.
I don't live near Red Hat, which is in the very afluent Research Triangle Park, where I'm sure many schools have Open Source installations. The new state wide information sharing system supports linux, but that won't be in place for years either. (I don't know why the state government really needs to make personal information so easily available to people who don't need it, but I don't really care who sees my grades. Everyone I know can guess them, and people I don't know don't care.) Reference
Yes, I called them, but about technical support provided by students, not thin clients. I was told that my school system has a support contract that will be void if any non-certified, non-staff personel touch certain systems. As long as that contract is there, I won't be permitted to change anything about a school computer (Not that I won't do it anyway). As it is, staff will be skeptical of letting a student with in a mile of confidential, "secure" data. So I can't perform an installation of linux. And the staff don't have the skill or time (Yes, I know they would save time in the long run...).
If you have clearly defined steps, please post them at this web site, which is devoted to such subjects. I've had this conversation a few times before, and have detemined that slashdot is not the place. I will be happy to follow them, assuming they keep in mind that I intend to end up with a good reputation.
Perhaps you misunderstand me. There is no technical or monitary barier here. My school is loaded with thin clients that run windows and are not used (execept for hacking practice), and there are students who are willing to manage them. Inertia is largely about understaffing, bad staffing, monitary issues in other places, and (IMHO) people like the "miserable failure" making decisions in X's intrest instead of the students'.
Hey... parent is super relevant. This is the most important aspect of linux in schools. Most school systems have too much inertia to convert a whole network to a new operating system, even if they will save large amounts of time and money in the future. This is why Skolelinux won't take off for years. I would like to hear a good solution to this issue. If you have one, visit my sig.
I do. And every time I take a risk that if something goes wrong, I'll become the victim of the buraucracy. I've seen such things happen. I can't become official, because then who ever makes me official is taking over that risk.
As an actuall high school student right now, I can tell you it is not possible to volunteer to help with IT in a school system. My school has a support contract that will be voided if any non-certified, non-payrol person touches certain systems. Even if they got a new contract with a company that offered decent service, there's still confidentiallity issues. Because it's windows, if you can access administration functions, you can access all the attendance and grading data (the part that's not still on flopies). The same people who are manipulating the school systems are preventing their repair by students who know what they are doing.
I think that our ability to change our selves and the world around us for our own emprovement is what makes us homo sapiens sapiens - wise men (and women). People who try to stop this are dehumanizing modern society - "terrorists," since that's the word in style for describing evil.
Wow, you brag as much as I do.
I take the practical mathematics classes you are complaining about, and I still know that abstract work is more suited to me. But I have Stephen Hawking and Andrew Wiles to thank, not my teachers.
I assume this means it works, not that it does something useful. Or was the practical application so heavily incrypted noone could find out what it was?
I am going to start calculus next year as a softmore. Can you explain this in more detail, with out actually using calculus? I want to know because I would like to buy a new calculator this summer, and I want to share this with my calculus teacher.
I've tried RPN on my TI-83 plus (with RMN III and CABAMAP applications), and found it to be minorly surperior.
My Siemiens SpeedStream 2624 often can't even be used to load slashdot, either with our without wires. I don't need to change the administration codes, because the signal strength is so bad you would have to be inside my living room to access the router. After that, it would just drop connections at random.
I'm not too woried. For one thing, I haven't gotten any donations yet, and don't realy expect to. I read several legal web sites, which indicated that the main purpose of registering as a nonprofit was to make finding grants easier and to prove to your patrons that you were using the money they gave as you claim.
This is me: "More often than not, a nonprofit corporation begins as a nonprofit association a loosely organized organization ran by mostly volunteers. In a nonprofit association, the members can be held liable for the debts and liabilities of the organization." - http://www.legal-database.com/
I have no debts, and I don't think I could reasonably be held liable for anything, because I deal with only with information, which is mostly protected by the Constitution. I guess there is a risk of slander or copyright infringement, but I still don't worry.
I use a standard paypal account. No fees. If donations are small, you don't have to report them to the IRS. As I understand it, the donator may even claim a tax deduction even though you aren't a 501C3 nonprofit. Check out the donate button.
I would say this year's test was of moderate dificulty. Most of the people in my class who chose to express and openion thought it was hard. But that is voluntary response bias. H0: One or fewer people scored a 1 (claim). HA: More than one person scored a 1. I'm guessing it's best to fail to reject. I'd also say there was at least one 5, and that scores were normaly distributed (I suspect the college board adjusts weighting until they achieve a normal disribution where mu=3).
Most likely, the old exams you studied from were "Released". The College Board periodically makes multiple choice questions open to the public for non-comercial reproduction. They do it every year with the free response questions. I took the statistics exam, which is farly new, and only has one set of released multiple choice questions to it's name.
If you take Calculus in high school, you won't need to take Calc 1 in college. You can take the College Board's AP exams and get credit most schools will accept. Even those that don't will accept an exemption. And if you don't do well on the test, you probably A. Didn't listen/get people's advice. Or Have a bad teacher, which if you go to a small school, you should have know about and prepared for in advance.
I've been thinking about it for a while. I was thinking, a good way to influence the series is to write a book, like the excelent (in my openion, though they do include some rediculously far fetched things, like the Great Bird of the Galaxy) Starship Excaliber books by Peter David. I've thought up a lot of details, characters, etc. but I need a good plot. Alas, I don't think that Simon and Schulster would be thrilled about publishing it, but you could always just change the proprietary names, title it "TINT is Not Trek", and publish it online under the GNU FDL. I'll probobally never do such a thing, but if you like, we can discuss it. If I did do it, I would need someone to proofread, help with the plot, and do some of the writing. Or I could us OO.org. Do you know any physics? I know physics as represented in Hawking's books only, so I would need to do some research for sure. I might be taking a newtonian physics class next school year, but I doubt that will be much help.
Point to ponder: Could the elusive source of the cosmological constant be what permits warp to occur?
Note to those who suggest waiting a few years: This idea would probobally take a long time to develop.
Of course, we could just write a book about writing a Star Trek novel. What is the name of that Mars colony, anyway?
My entry for the F4L Documentation Project got cut off! It looks like I don't know how to write complete sentances. It looks like the egovos.org web designer forgot to tell submitters what the character limit is for each field. New submitters, be warned!
even though it's not a poll. My network doesn't work well enough to break into. I can't keep my own boxes connected. I guess the correct words are "incompetent clods" - meaning the people who made my router and my ISP.
How did you get the Amiga Rom Kernel Manual? That's illegal!

I use my cassio wristwatch. Can't lose it because I only take it off for swim meets (it's waterproof). I also use KOrganizer.

One movie each weekend. With the extra features on the DVD. And yes, some people fell asleep.

I intend to take 3 calculuses in highschool. Yes, the NC School of Science and Mathematics offers Calc 3. For free, too.
