It's not a matter of blaming Windows admins, it's a matter of blaming incompetent or half-assed admins in general Just because it works doesn't mean it's set up 100% correctly. What we are seeing here is the effects of badly implemented and/or managed systems.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a MS apologist. Managing/securing MS systems is a nightmare (give me Netware and eDirectory any day) but you really DO have to read the manuals and invest the time to learn the systems intimately.

Even within my own organization I see a wide range of abilities and thoroughness - from completely oblivious and ignorant to never-do-anything-wrong superstars. That's just reality.

Wrong. I'm administaer WSUS 3.0 in my company and the desktop search app was not auto approved or autoinstalled. As I've said in other posts, if WSUS released the patch, it's the admins fault, pure and simple.

And to that I say bullshit. What we have here is a case of idiot admins. Very, very few people are truly capable of being good network admins. If you set things up correctly, WSUS and PC's WILL NOT update without approval.

I remember flying to Europe as a kid several times back in the early 70's. Back then, people dressed up to fly. Hot food was served on real dishes and you used real cutlery. You even got to choose which entree you wanted. Flying these days is like riding a slightly improved 3rd world bus. I can see the day when people bring their goats and chickens on the plane.

You've touched on an important point here. There seems to be a streak of anti-intellectualism in the US population. Being smart was uncool even way back in the late 70's and early 80's when I attended high school.

I've also noticed that bias against academic achievement seems to correlate inversely with economic class.

I was born in 1964. Both my parents worked. I knew kids with two working parents, one working parent, and single parents. In all cases, their social and academic achievement was correlated more with parental attitude and effectiveness rather than how many parents were st home.

My parents never volunteered one second of their time to school. What they did, however, was set high expectations (academic, behavioral, moral, etc). Amazingly, they also trusted me. I never showed them a report card after I entered high school. Yet, I was in the Honor Society, advanced classes, etc.

Having one parent stay home really doesn't make a diffference if that parent is ineffective. I've seen plenty of families with stay at home mothers where the kids are pure undisciplined evil.

As with all issues related to children, how they turn out is a function of innate personality, environment, and parenting effectiveness.

And just to toss out some useless anecdotes:
    - I've met some home schooled kids who are headed for therapy later in life (kooky parents = kooky kids) - you see my bias.
    - both my kids, who were in childcare since infancy (now teen and preteen) are smart, kind, respectful and have no socially undesireable traits.
