  1. Re:Alienware NEEDS a new Director of Marketing! on Alienware Discuss New Video Array Technology For Gamers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Although I hold Alienware in high regard for making really fast gaming computers (that are arguably worth the premium price if you can't be bothered to build your own), I lose substantial respect for them when they allow their cool new technology to be represented by a marketing turd who couldn't be bothered to understand the history of what his company has done or what he's talking about. Buy a clue if you care to succeed. I want to like Alienware... I really do. TTFN.

Try and actually order a system from them and you'll lose all respect, and stop wanting to like them and instead hate them.

Worst company I have ever dealt with in any market, computers or otherwise. I pray they blow all their cash on this technology (doomed to fail, IMHO) and send themselves to their grave.

Yes, I do. I listen to music off my iPod all day at work, on the drive to and from work (and anywhere else I drive, for that matter) and at home. I probably listen to around 8-10 hours of music a day, the more choices I have the better.

I've ripped less than half my CD's and I've nearly filled my 30GB model, with 60GB of storage I might almost fit all my CD's on it, which is what I'm aiming for!

You listening habits are not my listening habits, or anyone else's. Don't want a larger model? Don't buy it.

The original Diablo had one (IMHO) critical thing going for it that Diablo II was sadly lacking, the ability to save any where, any time.

Diablo II was the last game I ever bought that had restricted saving. Too many times I got tired of playing after spending an hour tearing through some dungeon and still only being half way in, then having to decide between playing for another hour when I don't really want to or have to (more or less) start that dungeon over the next time I play.

Thus I will never again buy a game that won't let me save and quit playing whenever I want.

I used Mandrake a few months back for my first Linux install, and installation and (for the most part) configuration was a breeze.

The only trouble I had was with getting TwinView (dual monitors) working with my NVidia card. I got it eventually, but it took quite a few nights of scouring the web and trying a few dozen configurations to get it going.

Other than that, pretty much everything else auto-conifgured itself during the install. It took longer to download the ISO's than to get it installed and running (except the TwinView, that is.)

Something like this would only be useful for someone who wants to experiment.

It could be fairly useful for web developers/designers in Windows-only shops who want to be able to test out Safari compatability for their site. It wouldn't have to be fast just to check that their markup renders correctly on a Mac.

Still, it would have to be at least a bit faster than 1/500th the host system, it would probably take OS X an hour just to boot at that rate! :)

Today, Far Cry has point saves (You can only save at certain points). Why would they do this on a PC game? Why do game designers force you to play something in one sitting?

And it's that lack of a quicksave function that has kept me from buying this. So, in this case, it's cost them at least one sale.

The last game I played that didn't have save-anywhere/anytime functionality was Diablo 2, and that game was the final straw with regard to restricted save ability.

I have read that a patch for Far Cry is forthcoming that will add save-anywhere, so once that happens I'll gladly drop the cash. :)

It was that one exception that was the problem though, that being getting TwinView (dual monitors) to work with my NVidia card. I just finally got it working last night, after several evenings of closing out KDE and editing my XFree config with Vi (this was after having to read up on how to even install the NVidia driver to begin with.) So what is your iPod giving you over the others apart from cool factor and a bigger hole in your wallet?

While the question wasn't directed at me, I can tell you what my iPod gives me over the two mentioned.

I use the iPod to have my entire music library with me at all times, so no matter what I'm in the mood for at any given moment I have it with me.

Currently that amounts to about 22GB, far more than the iRiver's measly 256MB and even more than the Karma's 20GB. Heck, by the end of the year (as I continue to rip old CD's that I haven't gotten around to, along with new purchases) I'll probably have maxed out my 30GB iPod and will have to move up to a 40GB model!

Oh yeah, neither mention Mac support either. So my iPod gives me that as well. :)

If there were a large-storage Mac-compatible player besides the iPod, I might consider it. Until then I'll stick with the iPod, fashion or hipness be damned.
