Cross over office lets you run your Windows Applications in Linux! Office, Photoshop, Quicken, Dreamweaver and more! I officially abandoned Windows due to this App!
Get it now!, or get it preinstalled with SuSE Office Desktop or Xandros.
Windows dosen't have virtual desktops or applets on the taskbar, plus KDE uses Keramik for its default interface which looks nothing like the luna interface in Windows.
WHY are there so many people claiming Linux is hard! REPEAT AFTER ME!
MODERN LINUX IS EASY TO USE! MODERN LINUX IS EASY TO USE! MODERN LINUX IS EASY TO USE! MODERN LINUX IS EASY TO USE!
If ANY of you disagree, reply to this post with ALL of the following Your distro and version number (if its less than 9.0 upgrade and try again). Your full hardware specification What you found hard.
For reference : I am using Mandrake 10.0.
Software installation is done all from the GUI, with automatically solved depenencies. My Printer, Digital camera, TV card, Sound card, Scanner mouse, keyboard monitor all just automagically work!
I have KDE 3.2, which has had over a YEAR of usabillity improvements, if you are not using KDE 3.2 then upgrade and try again! OpenOffice.org 1.1 has ALL the speed problem solved, so upgrade if you are using the slow version! I can run all my legacy Windows software securly in a sandboxx using crossover.
And I have used both OSX and Linux and Mandrake linux 10 stomps all over OSX for usabillity! Its so easy to use that I removed OSX and put Linux on my mac! Its that easy! My brother who is illiterate can use linux because of the nice shiny icons that KDE provides
So if you have any of the following problems *Depandancies *Bad fonts *Slow office suite *Ugly GUI
Than upgrade your distro! Either to Mandrake 10.0, Ark Linux 11, SuSE 9.0 or Fedora 2 when it comes out!
In Mandrake 10, configuration is split in to two control centers. "Configure your desktop", to configure desktop stuff, and "Configure your computer" to do the dangerous stuff, which requires root password.
Mandrake is one of the most usable linux distributions out there, with millions of satsisfied users, plus its secure! So the answer is : Usabillity dosen't equal insecurity. Just run Manmdrake update once in a while to keep up with the security patches.
For those who want to see the usabillity magic of mandrake 10, download the iso files here.
This ask slashdot question is nonsense, if slashdot employed competent editors this question would of never been posted!
I CAN'T BEL1VE THERE ARE S0 MANY !1NORANT SLASHDOTTERS POSTING ABOUT L1NDOWS RUNNING AS R00T! HAVE ANY 0F YOU EVEN TRIED IT?!? 1 HAVE AND 1 CAN TELL YOU THAT 1T MAKES Y0U CREATE A PASSW0RD 0N 1NSTALLAT1ON AND WHEN Y0U B00T 1T STR0NGLY WARNS THE USER T0 CREATE AN ACC0UNT! N0W ST0P WITH THE R00T BULLSHIT! THAT WAS 0NLY IN A BETA VERSION THAT WAS N0T RELEASED T0 THE PUBLIC!
Mandrake 10 is very usable, and is SECURE! To everyone who think usabillity and security can't exisit please try it! I am using it now!
I wish people wouild stop going on about Linux usabillity it has been usable for YEARS! Stop using shit distros!
A wiki is a collection of community written documents, with useful links to related articles. For example Wikipedia, an encyclopedia written in Wiki. See those blue links scattered on the page? They lead to articles.
Seems like they took the idea, but they sell the words! It will be annoying.
For example See the word Linux on a page. Joe user will think great, I'm going to learn about linux! But get in your face adverts for linux support services instead!
Why do people keep giving us the wrong currency symbol? GBP is the international standard code for pounds, not UKP!
For another thing, slashdot dosen't allow pound signs either. Stupid stuck in 1997 website deisgn that dosen't even have valid HTML 3.2!
Three years is a long time! A lot has happened in Linuxland since then. You will like what you will see with KDE 3.2 and Gnome 2.6! No tinkering necessary with Modern distributions such as Mandrake 10.
It may be $129 now, but what if apple raises it to $299, $999, $5000! How much are you willing to pay? With Linux you have the choice, you either pay for a distribution or you can have the free one.
You see linux as the linux of three years ago, I see Linux as the linux of today! When you update your view you will see that I am correct.
I feel sorry for those who "Switched" from Linux to OSX. You have made a big mistake.
The latest distros have bent over backwords to be usable. I am typing this from KDE 3.2 on Mandrake 10. The easiest system ever. You can even enable Mac Emulation for Mac style menubar, dock, etc so the Mac is easier argument is now DESTROYED!
Emulation systems such as Wine, VMware, DosBox, MaconLinux etc means that you can run applications from a large variety of Non-Linux programs. In fact with these emulation systems, Linux is the universal operating system.
Linux has no single vendor or architecture. When will apple screw you out of another $129 again? Don't take the chance, if a vendor turns nasty in the Linux world, you can switch! Linux can run on macs too, so you can "switch" without having to switch to a PC.
So in conclusion, Apple is a limited platform, that is just waiting for you to be screwed. If you thought Microsoft is bad, just wait till Apple starts screwing. And it will too, remember Panther? $129 just for Expose and a Metal Finder.
Lindows is very underated by the Slashdot community. I got a free developers edition from OSnews a while back. While it didn't include click and run in the free version, the whole operating system screamed I am Joe's Linux. Yes it rocked, yet most slashdotters don't try it because they heard that a beta version ran as root. Which is not the case. It tells you to make an account. Quite good, and I'm Glad Mandrake 10 has learn't from them because thats what I use now!
Giving a more respectable name will give it a better reputation, and will make it more recognisable as a brand. Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE and Java Desktop all are famous Linux brands, Lindows will have to follow in their footsteps!
Where on earth did you get that idea? The defeault keramik theme is all own its own. Plus you can make it look like anything you want. Mac, BeOS, CDE, Indigo, C64, RiscOS, QNX, anything. Look at the screenshots, see the truth!
KDE is the universial GUI, its just that most people, including you haven't clicked the wrench icon to start customizing!
The Red hat KDE is out dated, and is tweaked by red hat. A large amount of problems have been solved in later versions of KDE. I recommend you try the KDE that comes with Mandrake 10 community edtion. HUGE amounts of usabillity bugs have been fixed, and if you still find some, then report it, saying what is wrong, and how it can be fixed.
I have helped fix usability problems in KDE, so I know what I am talking about. Both KDE and GNOME developers are bending their back to breaking point to fix usabillity bugs, its just that not many people are aware of this fact. Check kde-usabillity.
You are welcome to join in, since you seem to understand the problems to be solved.
This page lets you read Wikipedia pages in order. With over 450,000 articles and over 150 million words, this is a monster! Even Slashdot's inside!
After a Mozilla Foundation member criticizes Rob Malda This page.
Anyway, Download firefox here, get the Qute theme here, tell all your frieinds!
My laptop used to have 128MB ram, then I put Linux on it. KDE 3.1 runs wonders on it.
Have you tried OpenOffice 1.1.1. Its way faster that Gnumeric on my machine and more functionally complete!

That is Xandros's diceision. Other distros have their own ideas. KDE in its raw form does not look like Windows at all.
Please read this, then use Gnome 2.6! You will see that your comments are -1, obsolete!

Why face the security holes of Windows when you can run Windows Apps in Linux! These two apps neeed more publicty then they have! Wine - Lets you run Windows applications on Linux Run Windows on Linux in a sandbox!. Be a good slashdotter, don't let Windows on the network, use the Penguin!

Folder won! See it in KDE 3.2! Directory has been obliterated!
Once again, ignorant moderators are modding up lies! KDE 3.2 is where the style's at, with the screenshots to proove it!
