You obviously haven't tried GIMP 2.0! It has gone through thousands of usabillity related fixes and clean ups! Stuff like the top menu-bar, docking system, modern looking icon and more make GIMP 2.0 an absoloute breeze to use! Please try it and see why loads of people like the gimp now! The ONLY people who don't like the gimp are ones who want it to copy the Windows Photoshop UI. It won't because it wasn't designed to be a photoshop clone, it was designed to be free imaging software!
It seems like its going to get a lot of education to eridicate the myths of the GIMP, which is sad since GIMP 2 really does rock!
Please try these desktop enviornments! The developers have bent their back over backwords to achieve usabillity! I am using KDE 3.2 and it rocks! Much better than Windows XP! Combine with Mandrake 10 and its the perfect match. Printers just work as well. My Epson Stylus printer just worked, as well as my Digital camera, Scanner, Sound card, Graphics card, TV card and RAM card. The only people who think that open source is hard are ignorant ones!
Check inkscape vs sodipodi for example, same job, different interfaces!
Mandrake 10.0 is the distribution I'd recommend to anyone! It is still community, hence a bit buggy, but the official version will be out in May and will be ready for general use.
I have tried many distros, including SuSE, Fedora, Severn, Slackware, Knoppix, Debian, Ark, Lindows, Phat, Dragon, LFS, G/CX and yes even FreeBSD which isn't even a "Linux", but out of all of those i chose Mandrake.
Why? Because it works. My mouse, keyboard, desktop, cdrw, dvd-rw, printer, scanner, digital camera, sound, tv card, alien beacon, toothbrush and nuclear reactor all work with Mandrake linux. Tell that to XP, who BSOD'd on me when I plugged in my digital camera!
Software is installed with ease, Hardware is configured with point and click! If you wanted the ultimate distro for both begginners AND experts (I have used linux for nearly three years) then get Mandrake!
Why are there so many posts on this thread wrongly getting modded 5, insightful by moderators who are uninformed?!????????????
Please try out the latest batch of Linux distributions such as Mandrake 10, SuSE 9.1, Xandros 2 and Lindows 4.5! There has been YEARS of usabillity FIXES and support. If you think that Linux is hard to use, reply here, stating what distro are you using, is it the latest version? Did you report the bugs? I am sick and tired of people saying linux is hard do use, when distros have bent their back over to make it easy to use, only to fail because of misinformed people using old distros!
Many linux distros come with the NVIDIA driver already included, no text file editing necessary. The reason why many Linux distros dosen't include it is because it is propreitery!
Try a distro such as SuSE, Mandrake Powerpack, Lindows or Xandros! They come with the driver! No text files necessrary! Just beause you had a problem with one specific disto dosen't mean it applies to all distros!
Such as Xandros, which can run exe files (!), Mandrake and Lindows which make Linux so easy tou use! I recommend you try these distros before posting to slashdot! I have found Mandrake 10 incredibly easy to use, and I recommend ANYONE who wants a joe freindly distro to try it out, including you!
What kind of distro have you used?/ OpenOffice.org is the Open Source equivilent of Microsoft office and it comes pre-installed in nealy every distro!
Linux automagically detects ALL the hardware I have, but Windows XP BSOD'd me when I plugged in a digital camera!
Microsoft Office works with crossover office1 Modern linux distros have intergrated package manger!
Please tell me, what was the last distro you tried, what was your hardware. It looks like your susing a mac, have you tried a Linux for mac distro such as Yellow dog!
Moderators PLEASE I BEG YOU STOP MODDING UP LIES ABOUT LINUX! Linux HAS cleaned up its act! Please try a distro like Mandrake 10 befre you spout your uninformed drivel!
Please try a distro based on KDE 3.2. Over a year of development and usabillity testing on it. The result is that many people who didn't use linux because it was hard to use have become linux zealots literally overnight!
Distros like Mandrake 10, SuSE 9, Gentoo 2004 are coming out already and they are so easy to use that you don't need any manuals.
So, don't wonder, download mandrake 10 today and see how easy it really is!
I recently installed Mandrake 10.0, and although it is still the community version with a few minor bugs, but ar being fixed, I can honestly say that Linux really is ready for the desktop. KDE 3.2 is wonderful, all my hardware works, hundreds of games and software packages and more.
If you haven't tried a KDE 3.2 based distro such as Mandrake 10.0, SuSE 9.1, Gentoo 2004 or the soon to be released Slackware 10.0, please try it out and you will see why HP and others are rushing to bring out the latest Linux based desktop machines!
P.S. If you have propreitery windows applications that you need to run, try crossover offfice!

Nathan's GUI gallery. It has every version of windows, many macs, Unixes, plain wierd ones and of course the infamous Microsoft Bob. The IE is evil section is hilarious as well!
I recently aquired about 30 Opteron Boxes by a company who was throwing them out. I wanted to do some clustering work with them, but I was worried about how to do it. The features of this system looks like it can do it, espcially for my database system, which has over 10 billion rows worth of data that my company has aquired over the last 10 years. I will check it out!
Linux is starting to get installed on corporate desktops for one big reason, less anoyances!
No bonzi buddies, root system keeps users sandboxed away from trouble! Evoloution has really good virus protection, The linux kernel can disable the eject button on cd drives to stop them being used as cup holders.
If you are unhappy with your current job, concider rolling out Linux in your business today. With the latest products such as Xandros Business edtion, Sun Java Desktop and SuSE office desktop, Linux for business desktops is the natural choice. So stop worring, and be happy!
I have already rolled out Linux to several businesses, and my wage has increased, plus I am a lot happier! So talk to your manager about rolling out linux in your business, TODAY!
I did, in Gnome 2.2 they had it, then they removed it in Gnome 2.4 and Gnome 2.6. They thought it would be more fun to rename the file extractor "Zip Creator" rather than fix this known problem. Search the gnome mailing lists and you will find hundreds of complaints about this!
Have you tried Mandrake 10? It has just what you want!

Sun Wants to Make Linux 3D
·
· Score: 3, Informative
Sun's Java desktop comes with Realplayer installed. So its not a problem for customers of Java Destkop, who are most likley to use it. For everyone else there is Mplayer, the universial media player!
I have used it, and it sure beats using a plain 2D KDE (even though the lovley kermamik interfaces looks 3D). I just hope sun decides to be innovative unlike the Gnome team who remove features, really annoying when you can't extract files from the context menu because the Gnome developers thought it would make it "bloated"
Xilinx have silicon with embedded PowerPC processors, BlockRam (chunks of pre-generated SRAM) and huge swathes of FPGA cells and interconnect. The chips have other abilities too - built-in 18-bit multipliers and communications channges (10 Gbps/channel, 20 channels!). All very cool stuff. Very expensive too:-(
I'm sort of surprised there aren't more FPGA-hackers than there appears to be. It's not hard to learn verilog (very similar to pascal), and despite what most FPGA designers will tell you, as long as you keep your mind focused on 'everything happens in parallel', a decent programmer can produce good FPGA code too. The start kits (300,000 gates, about enough for a hardware JPEG core and maybe a network MAC) are cheap (100 or so), and designing a processor is a pretty simple operation, and immensely gratifying:-)
64 bit computers can have up to 18Tb of RAM, but with motherboard physical limitationss it iss not possible. Even with 4Gb dimms (which are expensive) your lucky to get more than 16Gb out of standard motherboards. With this technology, We will be able to break this barrier, and do wonderful things in small spaces..
I for one, welcome my 18Tb Dimm!
