  1. OpenDCIM on Ask Slashdot: Designing a Telecom Configuration Center? · · Score: 1

Be sure to properly document all of your network connections in a Data Center Infrastructure Management tool. I like OpenDCIM http://www.opendcim.org/downlo... because it's free and open source

  2. Law Firm on Ratio of IT Department Workers To Overall Employees? · · Score: 1

  3. Here's what they'll do (if they're smart) on Mac mini All About Movies? · · Score: 1

They'll download the first 20 minutes or so of the movie to the disk so you'll have something to watch while the mini buffers data from their server. That way you can pick the movie you want to watch and just go. Also I wouldn't be too surprised if they built airport extreme functionality in to the software for the mini, so you can stream music from your computer to your entertainment system in a similar way.

  6. Re:A brief history of SUDO on Microsoft Patents sudo · · Score: 1

sudo and su are two different things. sudo allows a program to run as root whereas su logs you in as root. su really has nothing to do with the discussion here.

  7. Re:Making Mistakes on Yet More Google Gazing · · Score: 1

An error in your math: For each independent mistake a manager achieves, another person has to make the same mistake to allow it to fly. Thus for each company error only two mistakes ( by the manager and the person checking ) are made. So there would actually be 2*3=6 mistakes made.

Your calculation would only be accurate if the person looking for mistakes looked at each pass three times. That don't happen ( though it should ).

  8. Should I switch from mozilla to firefox? on Mozilla UI Spoofing Vulnerability · · Score: 1

I've been using mozilla since 1.3.1 and have been extremely happy with the updates to the browser. I've looked at what firefox offers, and to me it seems just like mozilla without mail+ composer built in. Is that it, or is there something more firefox offers?

  10. Or we could just built mass transit systems on Traffic Control of the Future · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've got an idea - create a mass transit system where cars link to each other and contribute to the overall propulsion of the train. This way we can all go in straight lines together and unlink when we need to go home. Kind of like a bicycling team, but the one who leads is the one who expects to travel furthest. People drive up to get in queue, and link at a speed exactly the same as which the train is travelling. When they need to get off, they begin to drive at a calculated speed and then come off the train. That way we dont need a bunch of lanes. Will someone make some java applets now?

  14. Re:Perhaps one should ask why it is asymmetric on MUTE: Simple, Private File Sharing · · Score: 1

The real reason is that ISPs realize that a person can only download so much data before resources (hard disks or, if streaming data, memory). A person need not be at their computer to serve hundreds of others who are probably not using the same ISP. It is far less likely that even when a customer is using their computer they will be quick enough to download from hundreds of different places at once.
