What is with the particular idiots who prudishly wield their "god-like" "off-topic" on something that condemns or pokes holes in their favorite projects? Goddammit, NO NEW or revived technology can be vaunted as an answer when something can imperil it.
MY point, which the uncouth, contemptable modder bitch-slapped to "off-topic" aimed to show that this technology can be CIRCUMVENTED. HOW is that off-topic.
Regardless of what that modder *thinks*, you CANNOT just look at one or two sides... almost EVERthing is multifaceted, often having more than 3 angles to a subject...

Did you know that teacher have to take oaths to swear to uphold the US and the president? I found out about that not too long about, by happenstance when I saw one form laying around somewhere.
Seeing that form gelled why two teachers in early 2002 cringed when I told them that if **III*** were a teacher I'd tell MY students you don't support any idiot in a position and you don't support a position for an idiot. You don't invade countries and NOT expect "blowback" or bad karma.... These teachers were immigrants or descendants of recent immigrants. THEY SHUDDERED, as if I were as spy testing their "loyalty".
So, I can see how a school, somewhere (what better place than starting in "Old America"(east coast, that is) for trial results...) and just "unleash" the education system on unsuspecting or pliant parents.
Now, this is (or may be) the price non-vocal teachers, lazy parents, and a complacent country pay. It will be VERY interesting to see the 20-30 yo immigrants compare the USA of today to the lands their parents supposedly fled. Well, assuming this country is hell-bent on becoming a police state.
"...can make it this easy for free, why can't a corporation with the resources of MS do it for their proprietary OS?"
I'm sure YOU know why, but for any newbies here who don't, this is why I think it's so:
For ms, there is profit in it only if money is made, territory is subsumed, or Macs and Linux are displaced.
For Linux and Open Source, the profit is from liberating people-- or at LEAST providing an opportunity for relief and freedom of choice. Profit may also stem from the "stick it to them" gratification. The playing field is leveled, openness is provided, and the more enlightened and willing-to-learn types get a chance to oil the skids of software/os hegemony. Best of all, Linux and Open Source software can run on MODEST and OLDER hardware on which windows would CROAK (these days).
Is there a clearinghouse to expose and embarrass into action the companies that eschew the guidelines?
(I'm generally all-quick and ready to take potshots at ms, but since they don't seem to follow their own guideless, I am still able to take further potshots...)
The database should also aim at the board of directors and shareholders of said companies. It might cause the firing of a few employees, though. But, probably, it might cause a renaissance of Y2K-like frenzied hiring and consultations. If you can script or program or hack the windoze registry and are out of work, you MIGHT get work somewhere.
Just be DAMNED COMPREHENSIVE and conscientious to get the database right. Allow the developers to get themselves moved to the "compliant" side of the list. They don't get to get "dropped", since they have a self-pejorative history. But, they get to show they complied. Compliance could involve either pulling from the shelf (or from availability) the affected products and replacing them with new or upgrade releases that DON'T cost the registered or otherwise valid customer. Should they be found to have defrauded or manipulated the "User-Level Security Enterprise Reliance (ULSER) Database", then they get to be made to have an ulcer by being re-exposed to scrutiny. If it is a securities-supporting or nuclear or construction or medical type of software application or service, then it should be delisted, blacklisted, ostracized or something until they FINALLY resolve the problem.
First on the list: ms, until EVERY ONE of their apps is fixed and setting the example.
And, make this database capable of looking at non-ACID-compliant, non-W3C-compliant browsers that break site experience or introduce security and privacy breaches...

All they say in my apartment garage was a crash-smashed-up barnstorming plane, which they laughed at and smacked themselves on the head, one of them saying, "We got called out here for THIS?"
These days, my computer crawls like a mofo, it crashes randomly/spuriously; my logs fill up with stuff that I'm not doing locally...). And it's a LINUX box. " unreasoning, over enthusiastic, and aggressive patriotism, an excessive or prejudiced loyalty to a particular gender, group, or cause
137.122.151.29/BIO1120/Includes/Glossary.htm - Definition in context"
Now that I have presented the first definition returned in the Google query, I would suggest it is deeply rooted in racism and imperialism.
If one goes back far enough in the history of West-vs-East diplomacy, it is quite easy to note that Europe
broken-out block here for readability...
(of the past, but I have not studied Europe-v-Asia power dynamics, tho recently I DID read about some rather unctuous and racist remarks made by a former Vodafon exec when his now defunct company (bought recently and is being de-branded in Japan) first entered Japan: either he OR his company seemed to not give a HOOT about developing the phone products FOR the Japanese and Asian markets. They just wanted to DOMINATE and subsume them...)
But, it is QUITE clear the the US attitude of being number one in ALL things military, technological, economic... is going to cause or be a catalyst for major trade wars if not sabotage and interference of banking and shipping activities between China and the US' pliant bottom partners.
Punishment is definitely apparent here. The Asian nations that were opened up by cannon and Jesuit/Christian intrusion turned upside down and corrupted Korea (but, not often told is that the US ship Sherman was thoroughly ravaged and sank by brave, courageous Coreans who defended their right to not be force open), China (opium and other drugs), the Philippines (the US took the islands but conceded to Japan's intent to take China by way of first taking over the Corean Peninsula (yeh, this is heavy on history, but I'll get to the point soon...))
But, East-West trade "pacts" have almost ALWAYS been lopsided in favor the of the US or western powers. Now that China is making significant forays into the territory the US thinks is its own, the US is getting irritated. But why not the same reaction (or a muted one at least) over Japan and Corea? Well, the US has basing rights, military presence, power to manipulate and interfere with the local governments, and historically has been the well-worn udder/surrogate for them, but they have not yet behaved in a manner suggestive of breaking alliances with the US.
You could bet if Toshiba and Fujitsu, Hitachi, Sotec, Sony, and the others ship computers here even after Japan "hops off the tricycle and begins riding a bike not subject US dictates that the US would take the same stance toward those companies.
Maybe after all it is NOT racism in the purist sense, but when you look far back enough at the history and the dynamics, it can seem quite easy to feel the pain and shame of more than a tinge of racism, nationalism, imperialism, hegemony, and continuation of unfair ball play going on.
It's short-sightedness, arrogance, myopia, selfishness, intransigence, and more... all the things a "business without feelings, an impartial system of government" supposedly are devoid of. But, business and government are structured and run by people, usually people who come from a lineage of power, deceit, treachery, wealth, and more than a twinge of willingness to strengthen their positions from the barrel of a gun or paying for a coups or assassination.
Historically, China said, "we go where the wind takes us". Seems the USA, however, says, "WE CONTROL F*CKING THE WEATHER MACHINE!"
Hell, I clicked to the ARTICLE, but did NOT attempt to get at the link to the AT&T body they published. I won't even touch the mirrored link.
Why?
Hell, doing so could lead to a VALID warrant to bust down my door. It's one thing when I spout inciteful or supposition postions. It's ANOTHER thing entirely to seek and obtain information they government CURRENTLY deems classified.
If I MAKE UP stuff that they want to QUASH by labeling as classified, I disseminate my stuff publicly and make sure I have sources to validate and exonerate my work as artistic, compilation, and aggregation. Even though there ARE clauses that could still put me in jail, at least the public could have an opportunity to rally for my vindication and release. Going after AT&T docs that are SEALED is pretty stupid in today's ham-fisted, mind-twisted office.
I say don't touch them. If you have remote control and secure download locations for some spy-esque activities I suppose you are talented, resourceful and up to a LOT more than a typical day job or/. keyboard potato activity.
They can't have it both, and they shouldn't have ANY power to deny or obstruct the right to have and the ability to get legitimate naked PC or one with Linux only or set up as a dual-boot box.
But then depending on the size of the selected quote, the focus or wideness of the quoted material, whether or not the quoting site is for-profit or making a profit in some way, and depending on if the quoted material is used for purposes of unfairly or viciously denigrating or destroying the credibility of the source, then it's worse than mere plagiarism.
That said, however, one way to reduce plagiarism would be for a renegotiation of the use of links back to the source, if the source agrees to leave the linked material intact or agrees to leave a change log so as to not discredit the one validly linking a body of text.
Ah, but then that won't work because the people embarrassed by the link to their material will just claim unfair use, misuse, illegal use, unacceptable use, all the while hiding behind a desire to control and monitor the source of the clicktroughs and to exercise the ability to ban the linker or even degenerate into lawsuit threats against the person/s or entity/ies behind the exposure.
Maybe, if the material is copyrighted but PUBLISHED (unpublished, misappropriated, stolen, (and SOME illegally obtained) material would NOT be fair game unless it rises to the need to protect the public from a coercive, evil regime/government, tyrannical, oppressive, foreign OR domestic), then Google or some other party could be in the business of mirroring for posterity ANY and ALL non-state secret materials on a country-by-country basis (the offended country could chose to declare it as a state secret if it TRULY is non-reversible/non-public domain information, but the ally or friend should not be permitted to order a takedown of the body of quoted text.
But, also, there are often too many malicious posters out there who just grab selections to fit an argument without attempting to be balanced or who don't even bother with a disclaimer that they cherry-picked information.
Of course, though, anyone trying to WIN an argument won't cede points to an opponent. So, a new rule of quoting without fear of accusation of plagiarism would mandate the snipper/clipper/quoter MUST take the time to add a bit of balance while trying to prevail in his/her own position. BUT, the requirement for balance would probably encourage or cause some relief or breathing space for the attacked party. Taking quotes out context and then using them in a blatantly pejorative or damaging way probably should be a VERY punishable offense unless it is clear the work is parody, fiction, or altered to protect the identity or safety of other parties who ought not be named.
I want the Federation Timeship Aeon, and the Baku life-extending enregy rings and some of the Q Continuum powers. Why?
So I can slipstream my way up and down the Terran timeline and capriciously knock off (or terrorize) a few assholes and the loooong lines of assholes they stemmed from here here and there to make SURE that hegemony, manifest destiny, dynasties and so on don't set back humans. Imagine temporal cop who kicks your ass into line but you cannot do much about it. YOUR RAGE stems from the fact that you cannot BULLY someone who seems to be protected by a Galactic Guardian Angel who is willing to "step in" and do the things the Terran mythical "God" seems to enjoy watching or is too loath to rectify.
The Trek "Prime Directive" seems nice, but aside from being a moral compass of the 1960s to expose or comment on Capitalism and Communism, it was mainly a story dramatic device. But imagine if today and the past 100 years we didn't have nation invasion that started or contributed to 2 world wars. Visualize a world of today being 300 or 400 years AHEAD of where we are no because we could have averted wars, famine, pestilence, maldistribution of resources and medicines. Imagine if GREED were NOT a primary factor in human (superpower and non-superpower) politics.
One reason they could get away with "shoddily-built" props was because even until recently there was no "hi-def" TV to expose the flaws in the smaller props and even in some of the sets. However, for the big screen more care and attention were given, but still, you're right-- many if not 90% of the props will NOT be of quality worth writing home about.
I hope these purchasers can get full-disclosure photos of the items BEFORE they purchase them to minimize the risk they'll be "stunned" and "mind reaped" if they get uninspiring junk in the mail.
And, of all places, they could hold the auction in Paramount's very own studios. Why the hell in New York?
It would be nice if they'd give some of those sets or rights to the sets to Star Trek Hidden Frontier. I am so sick of the bluescreen background sets that are not proportionate to the characters. I am tired of the characters looking like drop-ins to a set, with the obvious "halo" effect around the actors.
Tragically, CBS/Paramount and Christies will probably make a killing off of this, but the fan-based Web Trek activities could benefit immeasurably in terms of quality and maybe even respark a whole now surge of Trek fan return. Hiddent Frontier deserves to have better sets, assuming they will have a warehouse in which to store them and the money/donations to pay the storage rent.
But, Star Trek Exeter (or is it one of the others?) rebuilt the NCC-1701 bridge based on the actual bluepints so that their bridge doesn't suffer the close-up fisheye effect on STHF. I am, however becoming less bothered by HF's drop-in bluescreen sets, and have been enjoying the first 5 seasons over this past week.
It's amazing the scripts HF, Exeter and the others are turning into fun, tear-jerking, rally-evoking and reminiscence-fueling episodes.
And these people are doing it though donations or their own money. I think STHF, however, is FANTASTIC in that they put in one season or even one episode all of my favorite ships. They rotate characters, double-bill actors, and touch topics Paramount would NEVER EVER touch, at least not the way STHF does. Moreover, HF has funny intros to each act one or the beginning of each opening act of a complete episode.
I hope some of the people affluent enough to OWN this overpriced memorabilia will lease or lend it to STHF, Exeter and the other fan-created episodes.
Fortunately, Paramount has not quashed them. It is almost as inspiring as the judge who slapped down the guy trying his second time to sue/nullify GPL. Thank you Paramount for permitting us to have fan films go where no fan films have gone before. With each STHF and Exeter episode I can freely download and watch, your "generosity" neutralizes a little bit more of my reticence and disdain for "typical Hollywood". (I say that because I am loving the STHF scripts, and I like the fact that EQUAL OPPORTUNITY has extend to "full-figured" bridge crew, ships' captians and so on. REAL Hollywood would probably NEVER financially back and AIR such series divergence from profitability.)
Visualize these in human bionic eyes. But, it WOULD be a problem if they independently focused on the same point to where you're running at bionic speeds...
We need to remove more famine from Earth before we go on more luxury/bragging cruises to other planets.
I suppose if we found a hidden colony of exiles or prisoners JUST below the US in terms of power, we humans would be made targets because assholes want to play Masters of the Universe.
We have more important missions down here, like bolstering education, feeding people, fighting AIDS and HIV, stabilizing regimes even if we don't LIKE them, fixing our terrestrial foreign policy, ridding offices of corrupt, dangerous, myopic, evil, and unctuous people.
If we have $10 BILLION to GIVE to NASA, we should tell them, "You need to take another 5-year break. We're diverting the money to CIVIL applications. COMMUNITY applications. HOMELESSNESS reduction programs."
Stupid-ass humans. Priorities: Conquest, subsumation, power projection, economic exploitation, political control, techno-braggery... above almost all else...
Personally, I hope nature keeps on setting us back until we PROVE, PROVE we deserve to get past the moon. Right now, in my uncorrupted observation, NOOOOO country on this planet deserves, has any right, or ought to be allowed "out there". Humans are still TOO DANGEROUS!
NASA and government should concentrate on Terra Firma, near-Earth orbit research, and stop wasting TRILLIONS on pet projects we DON'T YET **NEED***.

/. keyboard potato activity.
If you have remote control and secure download locations for some spy-esque activities I suppose you are talented, resourceful and up to a LOT more than a typical day job or
they should shut the hell up about "Naked PCs".
Interesting that hindsight can be 20/20...

This is the opposite of funny...
Hmmm, how apropos... slash image word: "births"
Visualize these in human bionic eyes. But, it WOULD be a problem if they independently focused on the same point to where you're running at bionic speeds...
hmmm.. slash image world "inbreed"
Hopefully no body will be telling the next shuttle crew, "Welcome to Jamaykuh"...
I thought NASA already HAS a director and programs and a mission plan.
I guess NASA should mean: NEED ASTUTE SERIOUS ADMINISTRATORS
