I am dating an Arab - not even a muslim! - and I'm getting so much flack from my family. They are insistant that he is going to _become_ muslim. They even told me he was going to manipulate me into becoming a suicide bomber myself!
The insane degree of idiocy to believe such things astounds me.
I'm reading through these comments because the idea of moving to Canada is actually appealing simply for the social freedom.....
I certainly believe you're right here. I recently quit City of Heros because they made a massive balance change. I couldn't even sort through it all. Every single class was changed, and the entire damage/resistance system changed.
I got so upset and frazzled. They changed the game play. I had to relearn how to play my high level chars. no... no thank you. Thats too much stress to endure on a game that's supposed to relieve my stress.
Even though that patch may have been able to be justified, I couldn't trust in them to not cause stress every few months, so I quit.
You would be surprised at how many people are using IE 5.01 and 5.5.
I have certainly been surprised, and now must always make my sites geko, IE 6, IE 5.5 and IE 5.01 compatable.
If I don't, I always get a phonecall, "Hey.. this doesn't work..."
"What browser are you using?"
"I don't know."
"Go to Help, about"
"Umm... Internet Explorer 5.01"
(conversation trunciated as it takes forever to find the help menu, and about, and get them to find the version number....)
I also am absolutely baffled at how those three different IE browsers render things. Take for example nested absolutely positioned elements... all three browsers render it completely different in terms of position and width. Why? Why did they change that three times? And what the hell are they going to do with this next browser?
Yup yup... it's from the same Free iPod company so it will work if you get enough referals.
The offers are pretty good. Theres one for buying printer ink! Sheesh... I think just about anyone can do that:)
I went for the blockbuster offer of sending movies directly to your house from a selected list. It's like Netflix, only cheaper.
I'm just sending this out here because I figured someone might be interested to know about it. I decided to sign up for it because I've always had a difficult time with Macs and I thought this would give me a chance to learn more about them.
This sounds extremely odd and I have never heard of this.
And I live in Rhode Island. I even did a study of a high school here.
I also grew up in New Hampshire and had a very late term pregnant teacher. One of my teachers married a former student of his shortly after graduating from high school.
I'm leaning towards the opinion that you're receiving flawed information.
I thought they fixed that problem in IE6. You may have to include a doctype at the top, but I believe MS fixed that bug.
IE6 is different from IE5.5 and IE 5.0 and that also causes it's own problem. Not everyone uses IE6, at least not in my "important people who must be able to view this page perfectly on their computer" demographics. These are all people who have no concept of "Windows Update" and are still running on the same exact system they installed years ago.
In the end, whenever I create a webpage, I still have to make sure it works in the past three IEs. Generally, I can now create a page that works perfectly in IE5, IE5.5, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc, and won't work in IE6. It is usually the padding/margin/width issue.
The blades move slowly, but cause enough turbulance that the birds actually avoid wind turbines long before getting close enough to be harmed.
What actually does kill birds are large windows. In some areas in Europe, they are required to put flying predator bird decals on large windows to deter birds from flying into the them.
I wonder what would happen to a wind turbine in a hurricane?
The turbine will turn itself off. It won't allow it's blades to go too fast.
Turbines have a cut in and cut out wind speed, which are wind speeds in which the turbine will turn on and off. The turbines I have studied will turn on at 3 m/s windspeed, and turn off at 25 m/s.
Of course, the wind speed also dictates how much energy will be created. A 3 m/s wind speed will generate a lot less energy than 12 m/s. Also, the energy creation is a bell curve, so wind speed higher than optimal will also have reduced energy output.
Energy output is not gauranteed to be what the turbine is specified for. The site's wind speed and temperature fluctuations throughout the year will be what actually determines the energy output. Also, one season could produce a lot of energy, while another season won't produce much energy at all.
You can use this calculator to play around with different turbines and different site attributes to see how much energy will be output. You can then use this website to find out the wind attributes of your area, so you can find out how much energy a turbine would produce if it were in your backyard. (New Yorkers and New Englanders have more detailed wind information available, right down to your GPS coordinate!)
haha.. you made me laugh so hard and suddenly, I ended up in a painful coughing fit!
I think it was the "sigh" at the end.
Well then. Name some other uses other than condensing one's movie collection, and massive backup.

The Jobs Crunch

· Score: 5, Insightful
All right! Really? So by Tuesday I'll have a nice profitable business?
Oh wait. First I need money to pay for an office to hold my new employees. Plus, I'll need money to pay for the employees. And I'll need money for whatever supplies are needed for these employees to do their jobs (computers, products, etc).
Oh, and then I'll need time finding the place to rent, supplies and employees. In addition, I'll need time to plan out what business I'm going into, as well as strategy to make it profitable.
Hm. Yeah, that ain't happening in 2 business days even given my full weekend head start. I might be able to muster up enough grocery money in 2 days, not enough money to start a business.
Did you really think about this comment before you posted it? I think you meant it takes two days for a rich person to set up a profitable business, with the previous months spent in planning.
Honestly, it's VERY nice to see a computer of any type that ENCOURAGES ease of opening and meddling even for the people who are not completely tech savvy.
I know that Dell encourages opening up the case when you call in with a problem. Several friends and I have been asked by their tech support to open up the computer and change this and that.
They'd prefer you doing it than taking up valuable technician time to just reseat a card.
I think this is definitely a "your mileage may vary" sort of issue. Argument with anecdotal evidence a bit useless. I think only a scientific study could really answer the question because there are both surviving PCs and Macs.
I bought my desktop in 1999, and it's still running great. The only problem I have is that I can't play some video games. But I should be working, anyway. heh.
I've also gotten into buying used laptops. I had one 1998 laptop last until 2002 when the mother board died. I'll get around to replacing it one of these days...
I also have a 2000 laptop that is working great to this day.
My friends and I all bought our computers in 1999 when we entered college. Two PC desktops, PC laptop and one Mac laptop. The Mac laptop died after two years (would not start), as did one of the desktops ("died" as in "completely useless, and I'm going to break it if it doesn't break itself soon").
My mother on the other hand has been through three laptops in as many years. She is the destroyer of laptops. So certainly, the user influences the life span of a computer, especially laptops.
For the most part, I do agree with you, except there are some pretty big changes that are taking place that are important and dependant upon who is in office.
Such as: War decisions (going to war, progress in the war, etc), homosexual marriage, abortion rights, seperation of church and science, FDA, supreme court judges, etc.
Although a president is limited in actual power, he is a strong influence to either encourage or discourage movements.
Formally, I used to say the same as you did, that our country changes very slowly. But lately everything has been changing very quickly.
I have a family history of alcoholism. Given the knowledge based on scientific research that it is genetic, I can make a safe bet that I am predisposed to alcholism if I drink.
Because of this, I have made the choice to limit my drinking to only two drinks in one day, and 4 drinks a week (in reality, it is about 1-2 drinks a month).
People say I should "give it a chance" and test out whether or not I am alcoholic and only solve the problem after it starts. No no, thankyouverymuch, I'm going to allow the scientific research, and my family evidence (as everyone has a drinking problem) to show me there is enough risk, and avoid the problem before it starts.
The research has helped at least me, and I hope there are others like me who took this objective view and decided to avoid the problem ever starting.
Finding out the cause of the problem is not always about victimhood (although, yes, some want to run away from any personal blame). Discovering the cause of a problem helps one in finding solutions.
A person who is depressed does not always have a simple choice to just "get over it" as other people do. Some have an actual biological problem, or severe traumatic event that will need medication to fix, or intense help through therapy. They aren't crying victim for their biological inhibitions, they are just trying to find a solution to solve their problem.
One solution will not work for everyone because the cause of the problem can be completely different. Smoking addiction is an example of this. There are some who are barely affected by chemical or behavioral addiction and can stop smoking with relative ease. Some people have a behavioral addiction to smoking who are unaffected from using the patch. They then have to discover they have a different addiction, and chewing nicotine gum could work. These people aren't inferior; they just have a different cause for the same problem.
Even still, a nicotine patch or nicotine gum won't help some smokers. Their problem isn't only an oral behavioral addiction, but a hand behavioral addiction. Another solution for that is a nicotine toothpick to satisfy both chemical addiction and behavioral addiction for the hands and mouth.
If we had just labeled all smokers who couldn't quit as lazy by choice, we would have never discovered the root cause of the problem and the various different solutions for it. If we don't keep trying to uncover where the problem is coming from we stunt our ability to discover solutions.
Some may be thinking that discovering that liberals and conservatives have different brain functions means that we can find a "solution" to this "problem." We should either label liberals as mentally deficient because they are too emotional, or label conservatives as mentally deficient because they are not empathetic enough.
What's wrong with just noting differences? Just because we discover why some people are left handed doesn't mean we have to "solve" the "left handedness problem."
Although those with depression, schizophrenia, and other "mental disorders" are open to solutions that will alter their mind so they are "normal," that does not mean anyone with a different brain function from "normal" should be fixed.
Hell, we did try to solve the "left handedness problem," for some god knows why reason to conform everyone into a normalcy. But, eventually we got over the obsession to fix the "problem" and we let left handed people alone.
What confuses me is why the public has to be convinced to allow or deny each individual issue instead of the core stance as a whole: just because something is not average does not mean it is wrong. No, instead all the public seems to comprehend is: just because you are left handed, doesn't mean it has to be fixed.
So, we allow the left handed issue to slide without grasping the larger issue that something being non-average does not automatically mean it is wrong. The only time something is actually wrong and needs to be fixed is when the individual has a problem with him/herself, the individual is legally incompetent, or the individual's actions are criminal (the validity of the crime to be debated as we've seen in Texas with consensual anal sex). If an "issue" does not fit one of those three categories, it should not be labeled as a problem that needs to be fixed.
One's core identity is developed from how the brain functions which is in hand influenced by nature and nurture. Who we are is much more than just our physical bodies but also our thoughts, behaviors, etc. Our identity is essentially all we are, and changing that can be seen as killing off the old identity and creating another.
If given the choice, no liberal or conservative would want to undergo a procedure to "fix" their "mental defect." That thought should be ke
Why is the parent moded as offtopic? It is related to the grandparent's comment of forgetting about dial up loading time...
Anywho, I'm currently redesigning a website for a company who had the same issue - except, they actually put up the flash monstrosity.
It boggles my mind how in the world any web designer could put up such a thing. There were so many moving parts going on... and going on over the main text.
Plus, the website was so heavy, and so dependant upon client side scripting, it did not load on a good portion of the company's computers.
I'm ingrained to make pages fast loading and I like crappy looking sites that load fast.
Actually, there is no reason to sacrifice good presentation for loading time. CSS is extremely effective in designing good presentable websites with no dependancy on images.
This is so true and so sad.

Honestly, in all that I've read, I have not heard of this feathering of the blades. This absence of information makes it difficult to prove or deny.
I'm going to say that I don't beleive the blades turn to be parallel to the wind. You can read this (PDF) and see what conclusions you have.
Modern wind turbines actually do not kill birds.
The blades move slowly, but cause enough turbulance that the birds actually avoid wind turbines long before getting close enough to be harmed.

I love that scan because it shows my cat's polydactyly really well.

Ha! I was just thinking the same thing...
The issue is not being only logical and only emotional. Going too far either way is detrimental.
The key is to find a good mix between logic and emotion.
If that's the case, then that gene will not be passed along to future generations. This of course doesnt take into account IVF, etc.
Actually, the theory is that homosexuality and transexuality is caused by hormonal fluctuations in the developing fetus, not genes.
Interesting theory I suppose. But aren't one's efforts to fix a problem (addiction, for example) proof of one's free will?
That is, based on the theory that free will is impossible because one acts only on their biological make up.
Knowledge about the problem can go a long way.
I have a family history of alcoholism. Given the knowledge based on scientific research that it is genetic, I can make a safe bet that I am predisposed to alcholism if I drink.
