thank you for the informative links. IMHO VW fail way behind their competition. They produce the worst and the most unreliable diesel engines compared to BMW, Mercedes and PSA. That is why they resorted to cheating.
VW is by far very overrated, they manage to sell car thanks to a very aggressive marketing and lots of product placement. They deserve to be forgotten and their management to be jailed.
Indeed ! It is a signal to distros that GNOME should not be the default DE. It shouldn't even be included by distros. For instance Debian installer shouldn't offer GNOME as a choice of DEs to install.
1. it runs Linux, I mean the manufacturer (e.g. Qualcomm) is committed to integrate and support Linux 2. The manufacturer is committed to enable the most efficient powersaving with Linux 3. Specs are not limited or crippled in some way (like netbooks in the past)
Hugh Howey's Silo post-apocalyptic series is really worth reading. I read the first part, Wool, in a few days : it's about people living in a one hundred forty-four stories silo buried in the ground and the reason why they survive like that. Very good.
You don't imagine the pressure the manufacturers undergo from giant corps, especially microsoft. In this case Lenovo should be considered an OEM of Microsoft (this alone would have interesting antitrust implications).
What'd be great if Lenovo wants to sell locked down Microsoft appliances and stay in the Linux business at the same time, would be them explicitely selling pre-installed Linux PCs and/or putting a penguin sticker on their fully Linux supported PCs.
I'd happily buy a pro high-end laptop from them provided they commit to a full Linux support and advertise it.
I'm not interested until the manufacturer puts a sticker on the box (or its balls on the table) certifying full Linux support: hardware well integrated, all features supported, especially graphics and powersaving and so on.
Hey these marketing guys are fucking brilliant ! What a history of consistent names !
Remember when we reached the year 2000, they released ME : Millennium Edition, that was brilliant, not only you'd reached the year 2000 but it was more than that: a new Millennium, a future of brightness.
And then XP: ouch ! You got a kick in the balls. XP what did that mean ? Xtreme Punch or something like that : ouch brilliant !
And Vista, amazing ! Rock solid ! Vista, what did that mean ? Was it some kind of disease you get in south America countries ? No, it was a verb, it meant everything, it was everywhere. Families used it everyday: I'm gonna Vista to the mall. I caught my husband Vista-ing around ! Will you shut the Vista up ! And so on...
And Windows7, brilliant, very surprising, amazing : yes this one went to 7 ! It brought disruption, and surprise !
And then Windows8, very innovative ! You'd thought they'd go to Windows Falcon or some cat name : Windows Super Hyper Intrepid Tiger ? No, they avoided the trap, that was innovative ! Brilliant !
But I recommend they not go to far in innovation : Windows9 OK, still surprising, but not too far. Windows10 : no, very predictible, they'd risk some lame jokes : Hey, do you know there are 10 kinds of Windows10 users ? No ? Those who count in binary and those who don't !
I agree with you, MS have always played the same game, they get a slap on the hand, they promise, then they do nothing.
Result today : we can't uninstall IE, selecting another search engine is painful, and we are obliged to buy Windows with every new machine.
As long as MS have their deal with manufacturers to enforce a pre-installed windows nothing will change : Tied sale and MS tax. Which should be punished because MS are not a HW manufacturer.
Either they do their HW and offer a pre-installed windows, either they sell SW by their own means at no-loss price.
I think what'd be fair would be a ballot DVD : 1- the user buys a brand new machine, 2- boots the machine with the ballot DVD 3- picks up Linux 4- ???? 5- profit !:-)
I don't understand how do you get your mod points for such misleading advertisement. Power shell proves ms is really far from mastering the concepts that make an efficient CLI.
We'll have Xmas diner tonight, and my dad has requested me an XP CD (that I have not) so that he repairs his broken setup. He's not that old but he deserves respect and comfort. I'll bring him an Ubuntu live CD.
Wow ! you were modded as "offtopic".
It seems the signal/noise ratio decreases on slashdot,
too many astrosurfers or microsoft lamers out there...
Sooner or later I may unsubscribe
AUDI's etron is a piece of shit: https://www.google.fr/search?h...

In France they have a saying: no zob* in job
*zob is a colloquial word for penis ;-)

Otherwise I'd move along...

... for the good work.
XFCE is light, doesn't get in your way. Yet it is customisable.
I'm looking forward to testing this version.
IMHO it should be the default DE for Debian.

Stop repeating this total bullshit fanboy crap.
Yeah I agree with you, it's time VHS/Betamax fanboys stop this nonsense.
It's 21th century now, there are more important wars to be discussed, ex. : Emacs vs. Vim :-)

ah I like windows xx and I'm very happy
and someone feed the troll...
If we don't pay attention sooner or later slashdot will lose its independency

I'm so tired of reading these anti-tech articles with an MS bias to them, go play with your digg

Vista : Dave, welcome to your computer ... *click*
Dave clicks somewhere
Vista : I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
netblt (RFC) purpose is also to enhance file transfer thruput (bandwith efficiency). An implementation has also been studied.
