Lets say PJ is a crack whore who gives blowjobs for drugs. Let's say SCO introduces this evidence in court. How does this help their case? What if she is an IBM lawyer how does this help SCO in the novell case?
Note that I firmly believe that the american justice system is so insane and unpredictable that a judge would allow evidence of her crackwhoredom to be used in court. The american justice system is just a crapshoot, you are better off throwing dice then hoping to get a just or sane result from it.
You have got it wrong. It's not "Individuals who use open source but do nothing to contribute except yelling loudly and incoherently about it's benefits are supporting open source." It's about "individuals who do not use open source, do nothing to contribute except yelling loudly and incoherently how photos hop is so much better then gimp or visual studio is so much better then everything else on the planet".
"Yeah, because they have ASP.NET, which pretty much blows the doors off of most other things productivity-wise."
As a ASP.NET programmer let me be the first one to say BULL FUCKING SHIT!!!.
ASP.NET makes it easy to slap controls on a screen and bind them to a recordset. If that was the entirety of your programming efforts then it would be productive. In the real world that's like 10% of job or less. In the real world I have debugging, refactoring, building, deploying, testing, and a billion other tasks where visual studio gets in my way and windows itself throws up roadblocks the size of winnebegos.
When you consider the the whole of the software development life cycle ASP.NET and visual studio are at the bottom of the stack.
Here is the problem. When you wrote that code you violated somebodies patent. It doesn't matter what you wrote if you added two number together or concatenated a string you violated a patent.
So now you are a target for a lawsuit, what are you going to do about it?
Sometimes it makes sense to turn over your copyright to another agency. Sometimes the agencies insist on it (see mysql). In the end it's your choice of course but don't think people do it because they are stupid.
Anyway this most likely applies to patches, bug fixes, etc. I certainly have no delusions of grandeur such that I will want to keep ownership of a dozen lines of code patching some hole or whatnot. Who the hell cares.
I think it's obvious by now that this administration will start a war with iran before bush leaves the white house. The the only people who can do something about this is the US population but we don't seem to give a flying fuck because idol is on and Anna just died and we are dying to know who is going to raise the kid.
This is probably an ignorant question but I will ask it anyway.
My understanding is that in a functional language io is a bitch. In order to overcome that haskell has invented impure things called monads which are notoriously hard to understand and code.
Given that virtually every computing task involved io why would you design a language that is not optimized specifically for io? Whether it's file access, network access or database access virtually every program ever written uses some io right?
Gates and Jobs are not essentially doing the same thing. One is telling the music companies to drop DRM the other is saying "whatever you want we will give it to you". I think most people can tell the difference between those two positions.
I for one find it highly disturbing that the things were in place for days before the were "discovered". If it had been a real bomb they would have gone off without anybody noticing.
Why aim so much higher then the lowest point in history? Sure fingerprinting is better then killing but then so is castration or mutilation. Why not just castrate all the males after all it doesn't seem so harsh in comparison. Better yet why not rape them and the cut off their legs it doesn't seem so harsh in comparison to the third punic war.
But because H1 employees are willing to work for less this provides a nice downward pressure on all salaries. You simply advertise at lower salaries and since americans don't want to work for less you hire more H1 workers.
"I have yet to hear of a single court case lending any validity to that viewpoint."
It hasn't been tested in courts but I think it's reasonable to expect that the EULAS carefully prepared by an army of lawyers would stand up in court without problems.
"Were I to buy one of their products, I'd head down to the computer store, pay Microcenter for a product in a box and I would own it."
You own the box, you own the CD that came in the box, you own the papers in the box. You don't own the program, you are merely licensing it's use from MS under the terms they dictate.
"There is nothing that gives them any right to say shit about what I do with it (within copyright law). They weren't even part of the transaction."
"Funny that you don't mention people who work in offices, IT pros, programmers, etc. who are, by and large, unorganized."
That's their choice. I think they are foolish but that's just me. The unions, the AMA and the bar association is writing legislation and getting it passed while the IT folk rant and rave on slashdot. If you want power you have to organize.
"You might see the end of offshoring of IT jobs. You might also see clerical workers banding together to demand $35 an hour and lifetime health benefits."
God forbid you pay people a decent wage and give them health benefits. The only way they could get away with asking for 35 and hour is if they are indispensable and irreplaceable. If that's the case then they are worth that.
"I seriously doubt you are a Republican, so you don't even speak AS one, let alone speak for all of them. Same thing for the Chamber of Commerce. Unlikely that you are a member of one...."
I consider both the chamber of commerce and the republican party to be rotten organizations and would never join either one even that point of a gun. Actually the chamber is nothing but a fund raising arm of the republican party anyway.
"Take your pick: you can go right and be in bed with military contractors, energy companies, big pharma, etc. or you can go left and be in bed with lawyers, unions, media companies,"
I will take the latter. You also forgot scientists on the left and the religious nutbags on the right.
"The reality is that all of this right/left crap is a bunch of emotional hogwash designed to blind you to the fact that you are being robbed blind:"
I am not blind to that but the reality is that you get to pick your poison out of these two bottles.
That would seem like the logical thing but in today's world you didn't buy it and it's not your property. You have simply paid MS for the rights to use their intellectual property under the terms they dictate.
People here complain about the GPL but at least the GPL does not apply to you if you are merely USING the software.
Unions represent regular people. You know, cops, firemen, teachers, truck drivers, plumbers, electricians, doctors, lawyers etc.
Yes the doctors and lawyers have their unions too but they choose to call them associations.
I know the republicans hate people who are in unions but that's only because they tend to ask for more money from their bosses and insist on decent treatment. The chamber of commerce hates that shit.
Wow. Even windows power users are stupid.
What the fuck??? Really nobody is that stupid.
Here is really funny thing. Neither kazakhs, israelis nor jews are an ethnic group.
Lets say PJ is a crack whore who gives blowjobs for drugs. Let's say SCO introduces this evidence in court. How does this help their case? What if she is an IBM lawyer how does this help SCO in the novell case?

"That can be debated in regards to UN Resolution 1441."
Did 1441 authorize military action?
"Besides, we don't need to ask "international law" to protect our own self interests anyways."
My self interest is that I stick my cock in halle berry anytime I want. Is that legal?
"Ya, no shit! I'm still pissed off that the government made a secret deal with space aliens."
So your position is that nobody lied in the run up to war.
"Next time you smoke the peace pipe, please pass it around. Its bad manors not to share."
Next time I suggest you read a book instead of camping in front of fox news or the AM radio.
Oh and what does who she is have to do with the case?
Illegal because it was never sanctioned by international law.
Immoral because it was predicated on lies and is being used to profit those who advocated for it.
The number comes from a study done by the British medical journal lancet.
Thanks for asking. Any other questions?

When you consider the the whole of the software development life cycle ASP.NET and visual studio are at the bottom of the stack.
An illegal and immoral war for fun and profit carried out professionally (by and large).
As a consequence of all this professionalism there are over 600,000 people dead and lots more injured.
Here is the problem. When you wrote that code you violated somebodies patent. It doesn't matter what you wrote if you added two number together or concatenated a string you violated a patent.

"That's the fly in the ointment, if they make possession of firearms a crime, then anyone who has one is a criminal."
Did anybody say they were going to?
"Were you awake during the Clinton administration?"
Yes, were you? Can you name the date at which guns were banned in the US?
"OK, you tell me which one you think is Jobs and which you think is Gates here."
You honestly don't know? You didn't read the recent open letter by jobs? You should.
Gates and Jobs are not essentially doing the same thing. One is telling the music companies to drop DRM the other is saying "whatever you want we will give it to you". I think most people can tell the difference between those two positions.

Because it's LIVE!.
We should be glad they skipped the ActiveMailX and Mail.NET branding and went straight to LIVE!!!.
But because H1 employees are willing to work for less this provides a nice downward pressure on all salaries. You simply advertise at lower salaries and since americans don't want to work for less you hire more H1 workers.

You are simply wrong.
Linux is for nerds, windows is for your grandma. That's what the shills say anyway.
Anyway linux is not a corporation. Open source is a community and that's vastly different then a corporations.

He does. You can buy DRM free music from the iTMS store today.
