I have a few years of driving experience in Germany. In fact, I'm sure I've driven more miles in Germany than I have in the USA. I've quite possibly driven more miles at 100mph than I have at 60mph, but have no basis for that beyond my own estimations.
Does that mean since I have legitimate experience traveling at high speeds that it makes it safe(r) for me to drive 85 on the highway? I certainly think so, but the cop that pulls me over most likely won't agree, and I'll still get a speeding ticket.
There is no way to make sure the rights are completely revoked. Say I have two computers, a desktop and a laptop. The laptop is never connected to the internet, but has access to the desktop. When I buy a song, I copy it to my laptop. I then decide to return said song. They revoke the rights for me to play the song on my desktop, but I don't care. I use my laptop for all my music needs. A return requirement does NOT make sense for DRM'd items. You have the ability to preview a song and see how long it is (someone above was complaining about the possibility of an abridged version). Hell, the songs on iTMS are even labeled "Clean" or "Explicit". There should be no doubt as to what you're buying when you buy it.
Step 1: Check artist and song name Step 2: Listen to the preview Step 3: Check the time to make sure its sane and (if you don't want an abridged version) the longest said version available. Step 4: Buy your song and enjoy your music. Don't bitch if you skipped a step and got the wrong thing.
Wind power is notoriously unreliable. A coal power plant can be predicted to always give out X amount of energy per minute (hour/day/whatever). Wind power, however, cannot. As weather is wont to do, it changes wildly and unpredictably during any given time span.
This method would allow cold storage units to use wind power to chill their goods during the night using "unpredictable" wind power, causing them to require less conventional power. That's how and why it works, in short. RTFA to figure it out if this doesn't help.
Do you really think that the versions of OS X over the years have only ever added minimal features as typically included in a service pack? Dashboard, expose, and spotlight are all major features added just to the last release. Features that, coincidently, Microsoft has decided to emulate and also charge for in Vista.
The features added in each release are quite a bit more than a mere "service pack". Granted, each release may not have as many new features as Vista, but they also don't take 6 years to get out the door, either.
They tax the hell out of cigarettes, but that doesn't cause many people to quit using them. They "need" them (or think they need them) so they're willing to pay whatever price.
I think if CFL's were $1 for 6, and ordinary light bulbs were $10 for 6, people would still buy incandescent bulbs for two reasons: 1: Its what they're used to. 2: They think they need them.
... same as serial numbers and bar codes. I don't see why people get their panties in a bunch over RFID when it doesn't offer anything that we don't already have with bar codes.
The issue I would have with this, being ex-military myself, is the fact that an RFID tattoo would be permanent. When you're done with the military you can just throw your ID card away. Not-so-easy when that ID is tattoo'd permanently into your skin.
Military time is confusing enough to most non-military types.
Most people in europe just call that "time". It's not rocket science!
Ah yes, I miss Europe for just that reason.
I've had my watches set to 24-hours time since before 6th grade. I'm a true nerd in that regard. When I joined the military, I had no trouble picking it up (since I'd been using it for 10 years) where others struggled to do the math that 14 - 12 = 2 (thus, 14:53 = 2:53)
I really wish we would standardize on the 24-hour clock, at the very least. One day my boss told me I had to come in at 9... I had to ask AM or PM, just to be sure. [SIGH]
In fact, I think they have trouble even at 640x480, much less a screen 2/3 that resolution. Just a nit-pick here... 320 x 480 = 1/2 the pixels of 640x480, not 2/3...
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm excited. I'd been looking to upgrade my iPod for a while, so I'm sort-of disappointed that a wide-screen standalone iPod wasn't also announced, but my phone is also showing its age. Yes folks, I'm ready for the iPhone.
My father said (about the announcement) you'd have to have either a hole in your head, or more money than sense, to pay $500 for a phone...
I guess that puts me firmly in the first category, since I know I don't have more money than sense...
Of the old winmodem days? Those quirky modems which required Win 95 in order to work? They never worked quite well for me, and always caused problems for other people I knew, too.
Why don't we learn from our mistakes? Other than cost, what's the benefit of this? None that I can think of.
And I replaced my rackmount dual p3-700 server with a laptop in a docking station, and an external HD. Sure, it's a bit slower, but the power usage is a lot less. Now if I could just find a way to properly heat my reptiles without using heating lamps (undertank heaters aren't an option) I'd be set.
I've got a solution for you... put the dual P3-700's back in the rack. Now, add rails to the reptiles' cages. Then, rack-mount the reptiles underneath the P3's. Then, as you said, you're set!
I ran into this sort of problem just last week, with an otherwise competent employee trying to do some measurements for a recipe. The recipe was given to her over the phone, and the person only specified the numbers. It turned out the numbers were in fluid ounces but her measuring device was labeled in millileters, so she ended up flip-flopping randomly between fl. oz. and ml in her calculations, leading to all sorts of problems.
I'll bet that soufflé was delicious!
Given how confused the rep appears to be, does anyone else suspect that the written note in his acoount says "$0.002" even as they said they wrote 0.002 cents?
I was actually thinking the same thing.
Huh? If you want to go faster, just pass me. I'm probably already going 5-10 over the limit, but I'm only going to be in the left lane if I am passing someone, after which I will get back over to the right lane. If it's a two lane road, I can't do much to let you by, and you're just going to have to wait until traffic is clear in the other direction so you can pass. In the meantime, BACK OFF! You, my friend, are the exception, rather than the rule. After spending nearly 6 years in Germany, its so frustrating to come back here and try to drive. Its bad on the surface streets, but even worse on the highways, compared to Germany.
In Germany, people (tend to) get over as soon as they see you behind them, especially (but not only) on the highways. And on the highways, they don't wait for you to get right behind them, THEN try to find a spot to move over. If you're zooming along at 130 mph and they're only going 100, if they haven't moved over already as they're legally required, they'll get out of the way fairly quickly as soon as they see you.
When I was in Germany, a local Chinese restaurant would hand out cutsie little bangles that you could attach to the top of your cellphone that would blink when your phone was transmitting and receiving. They would also go off if someone within a few feet of you was also on their phone...
I find it amusing that those frilly foo-foo things could be used to combat legal (or illegal) eavesdropping.
Though, I see potential with this and flamingos. We change the color of their food, and we'd be able to have red, green, blue, and even purple flamingos! How cool would that be?
Priests reject sex (jokes aside). Are they God addicts? Something about this definition smells fishy.
IMO, its a possibility. I think *some* people (not all!) use religion as a crutch, when they fail to develop, or don't trust in, their own moral compass.
Those whose moral compass fails, and turn to God as a replacement for their addiction, become addicted to God, and would relapse if they abandoned Him.
The table could just as easily be turned. Someone who believed in God could turn to drugs to escape their belief, if they deemed it desirable to stop said belief.
Most of the people I know already keep a secondary address on gmail/hotmail, etc for this purpose.
This works, but things such as invites, forwards, e-cards that your friends send you with good intentions still mess things up. I had a good clean 3-year run with my last address, but lately it's just spiraled out of control.
That's why I don't give my friends my e-mail address. They couldn't understand why forwards and evites and e-cards were BAD, so I had to change my e-mail address and cut them out of my circle.
In related news, the same group demands the removal of all microwave and conventional ovens from schools, claiming "the long term effects of microwave and infrared radiation are clearly detrimental. We cannot allow our students to be haphazardly exposed to this danger!"
I'm not sure what to think of this. On one hand, any large, common language can reasonably expect to be used by any corporation or person world wide.
On the other hand, though, if this is a small tribe and they only teach the language to other tribe members, and Microsoft intends to make a profit off using this language, then maybe it is some sort of "human rights" issue.

The reason this matters for wind power follows:
Wind power is notoriously unreliable. A coal power plant can be predicted to always give out X amount of energy per minute (hour/day/whatever). Wind power, however, cannot. As weather is wont to do, it changes wildly and unpredictably during any given time span.

I'm amused that the parent was moderated informative...
Did the mods even look at the so-called "alternate source" link, or just saw an offer for an alternate source, and decided it must be informative.
IMHO I would have modded the parent funny.
Bah.. Bad form to reply to self and all that, but thought I'd make these links active for the lazy among us.
