First of all - I can't use Windows XP Professional
I purchased it - it was very expensive. I acquired it some time back 2 copies.
We all know Windows degrades with time and we all now that you get infected with trojans/viruses/worms pretty easily.
So reinstalling from time to time is the normal/healthy thing to do.
Well guess what? After the eight time (I think) it just won't let me install again.
That is for *both* my Windows XP CDs (laptop and desktop). Which over the 4 years or so I've reinstalled it 7-8 times.
So its not what is keeping me OFF windows, is windows keeping me OFF itself.
Having said that whenever I have to use it - be it at a friends place or internet cafe. The annoyances are:
Application crashes no matter what (from MS products to non-ones) and when they do - they insist in say corrupting the file you are working on so that you lose everything
The hunger for processing is stupid. Shame you don't get more games for Linux. But I find whatever native games there are: Enemy Territory or Unreal is 5x better and 20x more stable than in Windows XP
Just today I needed something printed off a colour printer. Went to this college they had this brand computer with Norton-Anti Virus. For some reason they coudn't connect to the internet. It was a virus. So it's that easy to get infected no matter what.
Browsing the Internet: no forced dial-up installation or any such malicious scripts.
Free programs contains no spywares. Unlike say your Kazaa
You can easily let your friends and relatives use it and relax (it will come back intact).
I miss less and less packages on Windows. Gimp 2.0 is pretty good for me now as are many of Linux alternative.
I see my self ever so relaxed when using a computer now (running Mandrake) - but use to get very tense whenever I had to long onto Windows (even before I knew about Linux).
One way to donate to Gentoo is buying their CDs.
Fine.
But last time I bought them it took ages (about 2 months?) for it to arrive.
I just take it, it was due to high demand but not complancy - which is OK.
Anyway hope things changed now - am thinking of buying another CD for a friend of mine.
I had the RSS feed in my Evolution now deleted.
It's just wrong.
Say whatever but it's not only about greed and fruitless commerce, it's about lies. LinuxToday is a whore.
Where are the ads can't see any MS-ads?
Where are the ads can't see any MS-ads?
I mean, I refreshed it 10 times now (is it my mere bad luck)? Obviously it was a fluke and they removed the add already! The Linux community is a very moody one (rightly so) - do you think any Linux-business will play with the community like that?
I am not embarrased to state: I am a n00b.
My experience of Linux is probably what? coming to 9 months now I think.
I found ctrl+C and ctrl+V the clunkiest feature in Linux, a real chore, like lifting some-heavy weight.
It is as if there was a lot of conflicting confused communication going between the clipboard and the apps. It felt hard, and at times didn't even work. Often I would resort to a left-click for a pop-up window and then select copy/paste to be more secure.
But this Middle-Button stuff is great!
And I bet because it's a Unix standard - its probably faster and more efficient than ctrl+c/ctrl+v.
The highlighting-that-copies reminds me of that IRC Pirch Program. So much simpler.
You learn something cool in Linux every day - nice one, thanks!
To get mugged in London you really have to ask for it. Although muggers are respectful and tend to only mug teens (for mobiles, etc) - but rarely adults! So as far as I know mugging here is rare. Unless you walk flashing an iPOD or open up the lastest laptop on notorious areas such as Stockwell (I almost got mugged there when young but screamed for attention of by-passers and the guy handed my stuff back), Peckham, Slough, Hackney, New Cross.. etc (you get the idea). In London you can wear wrist-watches, cool jackets and even golden necklace without fear! When it comes to serious mugging you should try Sao Paulo, Brazil - now THAT is a place that begs you being very street-wise. I use to dress-down so badly when I was last there - the muggers not only avoided me, but ran in fear of being mugged themselves:P.. Never had problems there but then again never did those obvious mistakes. Last thing shave your hair - its amazing how people avoid you when you look like a psycho skin-head.
"Proof of concept" viruses.
Is merely a way of testing to see if it's possible to write a virus for such a system.
Security minded programmers and researchers often create those and post their findings in security-bulletins, anti-virus sites, etc.
Oh that does it for me.
Yet another MS-Bashing article, such lack of originality, any excuse to blame Microsoft and now double in a row!!
Oh!!! - and I do recall how SlashPot was so very informative and the nerds so very, so very.. err geekier?
Oh that is it, that does it for me then- I shall wipe my account, Slash My Wrist and just say "ADIOS cruel PC world".
:P

My main arguments is that whatever is discovered today in pure mathematics may find its application in the future (200-300 years from now)
Group theory could have been branded as ridiculous (by middle age managers of course) and centuries later you find it essential in parts of Physical Chemistry - and crystallography.
Complex Numbers could be frown upon at the time. I mean square root of -1?? "Get out of here - spend your time in something more constructive!" says the arse. And then we find a couple of centuries later - how invaluable it is in Electromagnetism.
The main issue of mathematics is exploring the nature of logical reality. Some may even enjoy it as a hobby and curiosity, while others find you can use it as a tool, applying it somewhere.
I asked once a professor why study something so exotic as "The topology of Knot Theory" if he is not even into sailing... He picked a book off the shelf and shown me a modern study of how it relates with quantum physics.
Normalization of Tables in Databases (DB Admins may or may not be aware of) comes also from the studies of Linear Algebra: Matrices and Vectors.
The only reason for my flame is the manner some people labelled these guys as time-wasters saying "how sad". They are the sad ones, their mentality is not too different from the same politicians/judges vouching for Code Patents.
First I don't really know what ignorant arses are doing here at Slashdot with such ignorant remark such as "Who cares?".
I mean seariously how can you be so thick and short-sighted? Are you the type that embarrass your peers by talking utter crap at meetings? Or the middle-aged IT manager bluffing his way with buzzwords and acronyms in the futile attempt to prove he knows more than the team he selected?
Well, dear uneducated ones, I will tell you who cares: modern science in general, nuclear physics, and most notably cryptography. Mathematics and Number Theory is just a huge pool of knowledge - way beyond our technological time. Many theories which would be classified as useless (by utter idiots) - only triggered huge advances in technology: from chemistry to computer science.
Thank God, we don't have baffoons like those managing what is relevant or not. So if you they want to do contribute something for the good of society - they ought to save the embarrasment and shut up.
I wonder if there is an Office Suite ABSOLUTELY non-standard and different. Much like WindowMaker and FluxBox is entirely different from Windows. And VI extremely different from "Notepad"
I like ALIEN stuff.
I like seeing the wheel reinvented but only triangular this time.

But recently the most frustrating part is that a client wanted me to redo his site in 100% Flash. Also I was asked by another client to write an application in 100% Flash ActionScript!
Err.. the impression I got from what I read - is that Africa and Lower Asia will be better off than Europe and Specially North America that will be massacred by the freak patterns.
You should review this as a lose-lose situation (when you find your new masters will be the Chinese, Nigerians and possibly Pakistanese)

I am all for non-Flash alternatives in sites
:(
.. but no - Flash sites even have their "navigational" links are in Flash! How stupid is that?
All you need is this:

<PARAM NAME=..etc VALUE=..etc>
<EMBED src= "..."></EMBED>
