I would have agreed before. But for ages I've been trying to find a distro that would best run on a Samsung P28 with ATI graphic card. To my amazement Fedora Core 3 did the job perfectly, very stable, very fast and very dashing (beautiful font rendering). On other laptops like Toshiba I didn't experience the same speed/stability and ease. Just shows there is a specific distro for every computer, or perhaps there is a specific computer for every distro?...
I vaguely remember a long time ago there was a couple of security flaws in Opera much like we are seeing for Firefox. That in the beggining and then it stopped for good.
I prefer Opera when running Windows - it is a superb browser.
if the school can afford new hardware ie ppc's then sure it seems like a good idea. I heard openoffice doesn't run so well on Mac, and that is a real shame. But noone needs to be bound to MS Office, so many alternatives do the job better, kids can do without the clutter. *Nix Operating systems are more condusive to better learning.
1) Who is going to code their applications? Schools will have to hire hoards of developers to write custom code. Nearly all IT shops are against this, in favor of COTS.
Do they have that much money to waste?
Fact is, Rapid Application Development in Linux is no big monster. You can always develop in RealBasic and compile the executable to run on Linux, that if learning curve is a problem.
Otherwise they can develop in Java: Look at Skype, Limewire, Azareus, Digichat. Java is cross-platform you know?
Simpler languages like Tk/TCL are also cross-platform and easy to program in.
Fact is VB programmers are used to recycling ActiveX components which are very unstable, bulky and guess what support is now obsolete. Windows 2000 very soon will also lose support
2) Who are they going to call for tech support? How much does that cost?
Forums, Google, Articles, Books. People are badly accustomed with bad support that charges enormous rate; when it is known that people that work for them don't have a clue but follow from an answer manual. I know this girl that is clueless about computer and works for an IT Support Centre answering the phone.
Plus Linux hardly need as much support as Windows. It doesn't decay and corrupt so easily, it doesn't get so readily infected by nasties.
3) Who sets the standards for interoperabily?
I hope you don't think it should be Microsoft.
Interoperability is not a challenge for Linux, many internet cafes with solely Window clients run Linux on the background.
Many corporates have their mail server sitting on Linux.
Can't comment on Mac though, never used it.
But can assure you - that with many more OSS education-related arising, Linux is by miles a cheaper better and saner idea.
The good thing about Microsoft is that you can always blame them if something goes wrong - so that can be handy for school admins.
Even if you install an official ATI driver, 3D acceleration will see your desktop freezing. I don't know how they did it, but Fedora's ATI compatible driver is much better than the original one.
Linux users need emulators to be able to use iPod on their machine, also Apple still won't release some of their QuickTime video codecs; hence many trailers can't be played on Linux.
Those and other things, made my respect for Apple.com diminish to almost nill.
I would have bought a mac mini even on a sympathy point, had we a true ally in Apple. After all, I need Safari proper to test my sites.
That ain't happening in a thousand full moons from now.
Of what I heardJames Randi has his own an agenda. To disprove virtually anything deemed supernatural as superstition. He goes to such a length to achieve this, and has been accused of avoiding serious challeges or dismissing the results.
James Randi the publicist, author, with a band of worshippers, lives under constant self-denial in fear of losing his own challenge to the world: "£1 million dollar offered to anyone to prove that any super-natural phenomena does actually exist."
When pressed too hard for an explanation - he denies things based on "personal intution alone" which I guess translates to a simple "cos I say so".
I don't know if someone posted about this yet. But come on noone been able to prove this phenomena in almost 25 years now.
I've seen it a live, a BBC reporter using just his mind to make the graph of a computer (spinning the equivalent of 1 billion coins a second) go upwards. Pure mind over matter. The reporter was every bit sceptical like most of us. Of course I would love it to test it myself.
and here is a fiver.. please add optional "stay on top" button that should not be default but added from from "Desktop Preferences" somewhere. "Windows Decorations" Maybe?
and here is a tenner.. (in loose change sorry!) please add a menu editor or if that is just too much trouble then allow us to edit folders directly (not just items) by right clicking
My sister has Gnome now as her default desktop. I am tidying up the menu deleting entries on her personal account. While leaving the system menu and my account intact.
I didn't want to RTFM simply because if I find anything unintuitive, she being a complete n00b will have an ever harder time
So I've deleted every single entry in Desktop Preferences > Accessibility (using right click very intuitive) But the folder Accessiblity I can't delete directly (tried right click again and nada)
How can I go about this? I see there is no Menu-Editor either. But people say Gnome is about easy and useabilty first and foremost.
So let this be one example. I seriously don't want to emerge KDE, but if I can't do this simple thing - I might feel tempted.
A lot of my best maths and computing teachers were women. That at UCL. System's Analysis, Functional Programming and Calculus to cite a few. Because it's been a while now - I can't find their personal pages.
So many great mathematicians were women so why do they shy away from computing? I.T is dying collapsing we don't need an exodus right now. So in future we will have what zero participation of women in Computing? Fine desert us!
Also I find women (imho) are much better than men at teaching, presentation and communication. All of which very related to Computing. The authors Linda Bostock and Sue Chandler are but one example that comes to mind.
Men are crap teachers mostly. You often hear of a bad male teacher, but rarely a crap lady teacher.
There is only one thing us men do better than women. And that is cooking:) Get your girlfriend to cook for you and expect to eat overcooked burnt goo.
"Ahm... tastes alright if you drown it in catchup" - she says.
if they added many things rarely needed - i'd be pissed off if they removed something helped my productivity - i'd be pissed off which is what happened think of your best feature in an app or desktop environment don't lie in saying you wouldn't be annoyed if such a regular feature was removed.
can't see how the stay-on-top button (optional set from a preference panel - not even set by default)... is not a handy feature to have. I first learnt about stay-on-top in Windows (Nvidia-taskbar)
evolution the same, such a joy that stuff was.. a front page, with nicely-laidout feed (not the bulky left-pane you get in KDE), plus weather report to N stations around the world (Rio, London, Helsinki).. "oh we believe people don't need it, we know what is best for them" (hence scrap).
if only i was alone on this.
still default desktop of vidalinux is gnome installation is finished. - and i won't say a thing, let the feedback of a true newbie be the verdict. if she likes it fine - i will let her get on with it i definitely wont spoil her enjoyment.
they haven't made anything they've removed - big difference.
just imagine them tampering with my other fave app:
Dear The Gimp user,
We've removed the airbrush because that is redundant please use the brush and the appropriate xml-config-file instead.
... ok K3B sounded its trumpted time to install Vidalinux to my sister's laptop. another saved soul. Will wait to hear on her unbiased experiences - she never used Linux or even KDE before;)
some myopic moderator modded parent flamebait - only because i spoke my mind I want more ppl to move to linux, I care. fine - from now on it will be karma-whoring all the way:) so onto the practice:
... If only people could stop arguing and realize that Gnome and KDE can be seen as complimentary to each other and not conflicting, we would move along a more constructively road. Let us all be grateful we at least have a choice!! To say either of them is bad just shows the small-minded of some, very sad. So please, please folks let us all get along together shall ok?? Must I beg?

so as not to allow web spiders?
create an account, I am sure they won't discriminate against you.
had the info of the distribution.
( KH TML,+like+Gecko)+(insert Distro)
you could collect via some website
it would be less skewed i guess.
Mozilla/5.0+(compatible;+Konqueror/3.3;+Linux)+
Even Better, how are we going to convince the "ordinary user" to opt for a different operating system?
... here they come.

If it was hocus-pocus it would have been scrapped from Princeton University by now.
damn i had to RTFM .. not my intention
OK this is what you do
open nautilus
type in applications:///
browse to the category in question
rename it with a "." in front
that should make it disappear from the menu.
who said life was difficult:/// ?
+++ mod parent interesting !
