I agree it is one of those obvious things that sooner and later someone would emulate.
My idea was really purely a spoof OS 100% client-side, just for fun - it would be a "this-can-be-done" rather than "this-should-be-used" approach - for sheer curisioty.
Once the Desktop system is ready (a translucent pop-up menu a-la Fluxbox) we add items.
Calculator, Calendar, RSS news, notepad, HTML Editor.. anything that can be accomplished client-side. It will be one fat cookie!
I am playing with the UNIX/JS console. It is very very good. Shame it doesn't run on Konqueror, but that is KHTML fault. Probably there is a way round it somewhere (input fields?).
Also the code is not GPL, so I won't even bother looking at the code. If I had to implement a CLI it would be from scratch.. and obviously it would be no way as terse and good as his.
Mine would be a proof-of-concept of a "glossy" Visual Desktop; his is a proof-of-concept of a Unix Terminal. Mine would be absolutely useless really, but hopefully intriguing and cute:)
GPL of course.
I feel tempted now.... need to find some webspace. Popping menus + PNGs transparencies will be just way too cool.
I've been thinking about this for over 2 years. But I've never publicized or implemented it though:(
(It would be based on FluxBox.. so all the DHTML would be there, oh and it would work on Konqueror/Opera/Firefox/IE)
The desktop menu would be translucent (perhaps use an IFrame for IE but PNG for the rest).
And you would get all the little things like calendar, notes, email, and sessions would be saved on a cookie.
When I realized the utter complexity (and in a way futility) of the task.. I just kept procrastinating.
Stuff like that is good to do if you have a LOT of free time in your hands (or people don't keep giving you deadlines).
Oh and then there was GrannyOS (another vapourware) that I sometimes dream about doing.
IF you don't act on an idea soon, the Unconscious will tip someone else.
PS: If anyone wants to have a go at the Javascript Desktop OS - contact me, 2 people are easier. I got a fake "boot-up" script working (Detecting this.... [ok], Detecting that... [ok] like PLD-Linux booting up)
In order not to lose perspective. It is annoying but true as PC computer (not console) goes - Windows has the vastest set of games available. Mega-corps wishing to push Linux to the "family" desktop, should stop being so obstinate and realize they must invest in Game Development. I run Linux - it's OK I like it. I would have a mac-mini, if I had spare money, since I like making web pages accessible to all. Otherwise I might get round finalizing the installation of this some day. It's just hard or I am being lazy (or both)
Better still I found this Seems like you don't need a winmodem driver. Check out the section "US Robotics 5610B". You can't deduce all Linux distros are the same cos of Knoppix.

PCI modems U.S. Robotics 5610B
I have one of these. Works great, except I recall that certain Mandriva utilities (hardware configuration?) incorrectly state that it is a software modem (i.e., Winmodem). Always gets setup fine, though, except its linked to/dev/ttyS04 which is not in kppp, so you have to link it to/dev/modem manually and use that in kppp (I think that is right--no longer have kppp set up due to cable modem usage).
Hey thanks for hint! I wasn't aware Linux Desktop had this, but now I managed to quicky find the correct setting in the much intuitive KDE Control Center.
Modafinil does create tolerance. If you take it daily, it will become rapidly less and less effective.
As to your excessive daytime sleepness, do this: Next time you feel the urge, close your eyes and check wether you experience vivid dreams straight away (ie dreaming while awake otherwise known as "hypnagogic hallucinations").
If you do and you are still in your 20-30's, there is some chance you are developing narcolepsy. Which will increase overtime.
The good news is that apparently they are close to a definite cure. Some say 2 years away, some say 10. The research and cure will sadly lead to more military abuse subjecting their personnel to constant sleep deprivation.
... These guys don't understand that if you deprive people from sleep - they become insane, losing perception of reality - well no surprises there.
When are the irresponsible reporters going to stop hyping this drug? The brain-miracle theory is simply *not* true. And being awake for over 40 hours without any ill effects... that is a blatant and dangerous lie.
For inducing greater intelligent or concentration caffeine still rules. While some mathematicians still swear the correct amount of beer makes them perform better. I've noticed matein specially seem to have a better effect on the brain. So there is no rule for everyone.
I wouldn't let Windows 98 SE run on the entire environment; if it crashes BSOD style how am I going to send an email or carry on working.
Also I couldn't let Windows 98 SE touch the internet on it's own, there are way too many successful exploits out there.
Windows 98 SE is great, very fast, stable and protected but only if run under emulation. You can always have full screen mode (fwin -auth), and tab on-and-off into the protective host OS.
Virtualizing Windows XP doesn't work so well. Sure it seems protected and more stable, but kinda slow.
It such a joy using it. It is very fast, it rarely crashes, runs on a mere 48Mb Ram, and I can run stuff unported software like Corel Draw 11, Macromedia Flash MX. Never had problems with viruses, even though no AV is installed. For me it is the perfect solution for many of my needs. Brilliant stuff.
I prefer: Opera for Windows Konqueror for Linux and err... i don't have a Mac yet:)
Firefox comes as a second close option on Linux though.
The frustrating thing about Konqueror - is that it won't save password unless I use that annoying KWallet, but Firefox will - and some of the plugins are pretty handy. So Firefox its a very close second option. Opera on Linux looks yuck (and guess what no voice support ! )
Because unfortunatelly and for the embarrasment of the Linux community. Suse is hardly seen as a distro with good customer support.
However many Linux users are more than willing to spend their free time to help you out migrate.
First thing buy a few cheap Live-CDs to find out which distro picks up the wifi. Check the wifi itself is OK.
There one of many online shops that sells cheap Linux CDs - like OSDisc.com They cost about few dollars each. Make sure you include a few classic Live CDs such as:
* Knoppix * Kanotix * Slax * Mandriva - old name Mandrake (know to be good at hardware detection)
If you end up liking Mandriva, their support is better and for a small subscription fee you can join their "Club" to get help.
Commercial distros such as Xandros specially and Linspire are known to have very excellent customer support. But I've never had direct experience this is what I keep hearing.
For Debian systems Libranet is known to have very good customer support also.
If all this is confusing, just make a list of what you need and I will try my best to help you out.
It wouldn't work for a very long time, months on end, until one day - on a very hot summer day it suddenly worked. Very similar to that movie, time-space flattened. Yes the concentration was very high. That aside, I have a feeling the plant should be researched further (if it already isn't) for it's medical properties and power of cure alone.

Meanwhile in the 21st century ...
SCOTTY sits at a nearby Macintosh, surveys the machine quizzically, clears his throat and says: "Computer!"
BONES steps in quickly, picks up the Mouse and shoves it into Scotty's hand.
SCOTTY looks at the mouse, baffled, then puts it to his lips like a mike: "Hello? Computer...?"
NICHOLS (bewildered): Just use the keyboard...
SCOTTY: The keyboard?... How quaint!

Define the term paradox.
Construct the self-referential statement "This phrase is a paradox".
What is the solution?
I am still struggling with that one.
Help.
I am with these guys, because they are not overloaded (yet) you get superb service.

Much better than dialling up some £1.00 p/minute support going around in circles.
