Actually, I suspect that the new designation is a nod to project member Seymour Papert, who wrote the book "The Children's Machine: Rethinking School in The Age of The Computer" -- in which he argued (back in 1992) that access to computers and online information networks would be crucial in improving our education systems and preparing our younger generations for dealing with a new and rapidly evolving world.
Actually, children are better served by a teacher who cares about his/her work and genuinely challanges them to actually exercise the mass of grey matter that is so devoid of thought in current times.
It's just another version of the argument "The government not bothering to fund it = the government banning it". The argument has been used for years to portray the reduction in the funding of "official government art" as a draconian effort to censor things.
No, a ban means someone will come and charge you with a crime. Just because the government won't spend tax-payers dollars doesn't mean it's illegal to do it. Much like each state can set what ever drinking age they want. It just happens that if that age is below 21, they don't get any money to support their federal highways.
Nothing will kill the controvercy around stem cells. If we found a way to turn post-consumer styrofoam into stems cells, while whitening teeth and curing cancer at the same time, the religious groups would still scream about it.
Nice lumping of general religion in with the extremists. Just like I don't lump all democrats in with the likes of Michael Moore, don't lump me in with all the crazy, religious extremists like that church from Arkansas.
Stupid. If there was anything left to find, or anything hat pointed to when the wiping was done, then the disk was not wiped. More likely this person only wiped specific folders. To say it again: You have to wipe the complete drive. You have to sacrifice your installation. Only then will no evidence be left and no evidence that can tell when the drive was wiped.
Which is why I have 3 degauss rings built inside my case... One for each axis... If they want my data, they are going to have to work really hard to find anything.
Personally, I would love to see us progress to the point where cows are well fed, happy and healthy. The meat will taste better, we'll be healthier and there's less cruelty to the cows. I would never eat meat grown in a lab.
We already have this, although it originated in Japan. It's called Kobe Beef. Only, its one of the most expensive meats on the planet.
No, the single largest reason that kids are screwed up is that the State has taken damn near all the parent's rights away and the US has become a more "it's not your fault, it's *points at someone... usually an affluent white male* his fault. Blame it all on him." society. Those two thing combined lead to the degredation in the moral standing and ethics of today's youth. (btw, I'm not just some old geezer saying this).
The second lagest reason is bad parenting. Lets just face it, some people need to graduate from a "parenting" class before they're ever allowed to breed.
Good Plan! Make him fat, greasy, and full of achne. Then he will be scorned at school for being different... Oh, I guess all this amounts to is he'll be eating too much processed meat.... Well, damn it.... That won't change a thing!
13 million passport for a population of 300 Americans.. Do Americans travel that seldom to another country???
Let's see here:
Netherlands Land Area: 33,920 sq km (13,097 sq miles)
USA Land area: 9,631,418 sq km (5,984,685 sq miles)
State of Mississippi 121489 sq km (46907 sq mi.)
Well if you go on travel distance, I leave my home state quite often. However, we don't need passports to go from state to state. I have only been out of the country once (to Mexico) and it took about 10 hours to travel. Does that help much with perspective?
As featured a couple of weeks ago in this article on Wired, these RFID chips have already been hacked.
Clone != Hack
Clone implies that someone can scan the chip and duplicate the data onto another one in a bit by bit copy. Hack implies that they can alter the information on the chip at will without the alteration being detected.
So, we have the far right using fear to "take away our rights". Now, we have the far left using fear to strip power from the current majority.
Pot: "Hello, Mr. Kettle."
Kettle: "Why, hello there, Mr. Pot."
Pot: "I say, did you know that you were black....................."
One of the things that is a lot more common today than it has been in American history, yes, even back in the "bumpkin days" of America pre-industrialization, is that people just don't critically think anymore. "Special device?" Anyone with a modicum of critical thinking skills would look at a few simple things and freak:
1) All computer security systems have been defeated.
2) This is kinda like one of them thar computer security systems that has been defeated.
3) I'm carrying this thing around the world, and any schmo who can defeat it, can identify me faster than the police can.
4) There are a lot of terrorists and terrorism sympathizers who'd just love to off me because I'm American.
If you aren't careful, you'll be broadcasting enough info out there that you'll be easily victimized.
One phrase to mitigate all that you just said.
CLOSE THE FREAKING COVER AND DON'T OPEN IT!
It's got a faraday cage built into the cover for goodness sakes. Also, people scan your Visa to know you're an American... We're easily identifiable by our mannerisms.
Ever had strong antibiotics? One of the bits of advice they give you is to eat stuff like yogurt once you're done the treatment.
The reason for this is that antibiotics will kill off your own symbiotic bacteria in addition to the infection they're supposed to cure. However, replacing those same intestianal bacteria is incredibly easy with the right foodstuffs.
The difference with bacteriophages is that, in general, they target specific bacteria.
Fear mongering to steal my rights is abhorant. Fear mongering to steal my rights with unbelievably specious arguments is even worse.
You misse dthe whole point of that. But, if you'd like to chose one word to pick on.... how does listening to INTERNATIONAL phone calls impune your you rights as a citizien?
a user history to content when it is shared among computers or other devices
I think that would be a cool feature.
And then Sony sells the way to read that info to the RIAA/MPAA/all other Assholes... Oh, and Sony forogt to tell you that they are also including uniquely identifying information for each user who had downloaded it. Now they can find a file once and have a full history of many more people to sue; all coming with nice, uniquely identifiable tags to ease the legal proceedings.
I fully agree with the sentiment. Nixon resigned under the shadow of impeachment for illegally wiretapping a hotel. One single place. This administration basically wrietapped the entire country. I can't understand why their wasn't more outrage. It saddens me.
Major difference. Those taps were to spy on americans talking to other americans in order to gain political advantage. The Bush administration tapped INTERNATIONAL calls to and from suspected terrorists in order to help break up plans and gain tactical intelligence that keeps a group of Terrorists out of a Mall with machine guns, of planes that kill 3,000+ of your countrymen, etc.
The only fault I see with the Bush administration is that they didn't go back and get the court orders (even though I seriously doubt international phone calls fall under the jursidiction of FISA). There is one thing that, if it has occurred, I'll join your call for impeachment immediately. If they have intercepted phone calls within the United States between two citizens without a warrant, then he needs to be impeached.
Until I see that, you need to get your head out of your theoretical ass and go to the ruins of the World Trade Center for a while.
I'm dying to hear what the conservative side (FOX News) has to say about this. I want the see the look on Bill O'Reilly now and how he's going to slander the ACLU and The New York Times on the next Factor show.
Slander is words falsely spoken that damage the reputation of another. I'd like you to point out false statements that O'Reily has said about the ACLU with the direct intention of harm. However, going back on topic, I will say that this is definately the ACLU court shopping to get a favorable first opinion. That said, I want to emphasize that Judge Taylor is a well respected jurist, and with her history, it was pretty much a slam dunk that she would fight against preceived Civil Liberties violations. Simply, this is the first salvo from the ACLU, but it is far from over.
By exporting heavily subsidized food the industrialised countries are not only depriving third world countries of farming revenue from export, but as a result also upsetting their trade balance and making it hard for third world farmers to compete even in their own markets.
Sure, let's kill off the main source of income for a large portion of the midwest and south... Nothing like a nice boost to inflation, jobless/welfare claims, foreclosures, and everyone's grocery bill to make you feel all nice and cozy in your insane and impossible world.
You want to see a stressful job? Go sit around the table of a family that owns a farm during one of the worst draughts in the past 50 years. Try explaining to the children there that you think it's better to take away their father's job, farm, their house, and throw them on welfare because some "third world" country needs the US's support more.
I personally find evolution and creationism quite compatible. I personally think that God (or however you want to define an all-encompasing power) has a wonderful sense of humor and kind of acts like the mentor you love to hate. The mentor makes you work your ass off to get what you deserve. But when you get there, it's much more meaningful than being handed it on a silver platter. (Yes, I'm mixing metaphores like a tempest in a teacup; get over it).
That said,
evolution is as much fact as the earth revolving around the sun. it doesn't take a genius to understand that--some basic damn education in school would help!!!
Amazing that an equally outraged comment in the other direction would yeild a "Troll/Flamebait" rating....
Actually, that is the same idea of US Courts. However, Judges in the US tend to apply their own politics to their rulings and skew the original intent of the law by creating jucial precidents. These CAN be over turned, but usually they are not. I guess a good example of that is using the the first ammendment (freedom of speech, religion, assembly, etc.) to force someone to take be quiet (I.E. take down a memorial that has a cross on it, for speaking in a "racist" manner, etc. etc.). Needless to say, the courts don't "make" the laws, but they can have a dire impact on how they are implimented.
Being able to persecute minority religions (prior to the ACLU it was actually illegal to be of the wrong religion in many places).
Oh, so now you can actively persecute the Majority religion on the CHANCE that something MIGHT, SOMEHOW OFFEND someone. The ACLU is a waste of a tax-exempt entity.
I'll take the troll for this one, but I dare someone to prove me wrong.

Am I the only one that was relieved when I saw the picture of the robot hand that plays organ? I figured with slashdot, you never know.

In linux it's generally a 1-3Gig split... 1Gig for kernel, 3 gig for user
