I've had this repo in my apt list forever, it's changed names three times and has had two maintainers since I've added it to my list. It's where the dvd decrypter deally lived and a better mplayer package and well surprise, multi-media packages that were/are bleeding edge compared to the stock debian fare. I changed my apt source ages ago to reflect the title change after I noticed apt-get was pitching a fit; it only took opening up another browser tab and going to the multi-media web site to see why. You have to manually edit/write a file to add the repo, manually grab and load the key. Jeeze, I always have to add non-free and contrib on a new default install.
I'm cutting the muti-media maintainer lotsa slack, I appreciate his effort.
Prolly just a matter of personal pride as much as anything else. And now that I've been running debian for ages and have gotten use to maintaining it at the desktop and server level on my home LAN I just prefer it over any microsoft product.
yup. i need to use firefox when selling on ebay cuz chrome doesn't work right; photobucket chokes on firefox, gotta fire up chrome to access certain features...
a roku hockey puck and plex media server running on my debian server and also my debian desktop. if i can't find what i want on netflix or any of the other channels on the roku i grab a torrent. i was using a soft-modded 1st gen xbox and xbmc but got the roku for Christmas. there are compromises using either set-up.
AT&T supplied me with a small piece of hardware for my adsl connection. AT&T refers to it as a modem even though it doesn't modulate or demodulate anything. Hopefully this dumbing down of language doesn't creep into areas where specific words are used to convey precise meanings, like medicine or engineering.
Of course they think of their computer as an appliance, that is how PC makers market them. That is how Microsoft markets Its OS. And to throw in an automotive analogy, it's how Toyota markets their vehicles.
Fah, anyone can do it over the internet. I broadcast a weather report from a python weather script (found in the debian repo) and espeak on a dedicated debian xen domU through the sound chip into a ramsey fm10C and into the very exclusive FM cloud. The downside is my FM cloud is only about 1/2 mile across.
I've been able to run OS X on my AMD gateway 5654 for a while now with only the addition of a cheap nvidia graphic card. you'd be surprised what the ability to read, comprehend and follow directions can accomplish.
Two years ago I bought a computer from Best Buy because at times they offer 0% financing and my 1 Ghz Athlon Thunderbird based PC was showing it's age, taking forever to two pass encode xvids. Got a dual core AMD and made sure it had an nvidia graphics chip. Got it home, and wired it up. it came loaded with vista. Installed Imgburn and downloaded the debian netinst iso image. Burned the image to a disc, rebooted and installed debian over vista. Why would anyone pay 40 bucks over and above what was just spent and still have Windows installed?
i've been playing around with the iPC hacked OS X 10.5.6 on my store bought bone stock gateway gt5654. there are a few issues with the nvidia 6150se video chip and i still can't get my ps/2 keyboard & trackball to work, but it's usable with a usb keyboard & mouse.
that being said, i still prefer to use debian and compiz-fusion.
