    two 32 meg SIMM sticks onto a pentium 75 MB. to this day they work, but i remember sorta kinda i mangled some clips to where 64 meg will be all it ever has cuz something will break due to metal fatigue if those metal parts are ever even just touched again. which is fine, those two 32 meg SIMM sticks were kinda pricey...

    cuz i run my home network. four debian boxes. i use streamtuner and xmms when i get bored with my regular fare. KFJC has a nize eclectic selection. WFMU is a good source as well. my tastes run from punk to jazz. as a joe sixpack construction worker i have to endure a lot of demographically correct AOR FM radio tuned in by a yellow dewalt radio/battery charger. i have a walkman tuner i use on occassion on big jobs, but the suits frown on headphone usage, no matter how menial the task. same guys that read and talk on cell phones while they drive in traffic are gonna tell me what's safe? yeah, uh huh...oops sorry i drifted off the subject...dick dale, ramones, beatles, lowell george, hendrix, pearl jam, screeching weasel, smashing pumkins, dread zepplin, lyle lovett, jack bruce and early clapton and i spose ginger baker, johnny and edgar winter....i have more but it seems pointless, i listen to what i like, duh.

    have used mozilla since the goofy asshole that performs IT and landscaping decided we should use a linux brand OS. i think its called debian, the logo is a penguin cartoon deally, sorta. my mouse and keyboard work and we don't have to pay protection to peter norton anymore. jeeze, free beer tastes just like store bought. can you say "DUH?"

    The arguments that the TV makes a poor monitor misses the point.

    no, an NTSC tv makes for a horrific monitor. this is from a first hand xbox linux xebian install anda 55" rear projection sony. first it's overscan. then it's the resolution will not be televised.

    not to mention my grandsons kick my ass in halo multiplayer i forget what mode but i seem to always lose deally. i'm not complaining, just stating my antecdotal experience. cuz i couldn't use empirical inna sentence.

    obviously you are oblivious to furiously punching in apropos game cheats when your wanted level rises too high. the cops in GTA (GTA3 and vice city on my xbox) are basically just another gang you have to contend with, they are just more relentless and more powerful than the other gangs.

    you buy an off the shelf PC, and it comes bundled with a version of ms windows. you're buying not only the hardware but also a licence to use the included software. the PC vendor is really responsible, cuz you bought "their" package. i went through a quite a few losing arguments with NEC cuz i had to load the damn OEM supplied win95 disk and uninstall all the crap everytime i had to reinstall the OS. and ms just said i bought a "system" from NEC and that was that.

    so i tried a linux distro. and till i learned how to use it, it was just as crappy as any version of windows. linux is a lot easier to drive once you get the hang of it. i bleve that's the dreaded *nix learning curve. i don't see anyway around that obstacle.

    i bought a marantz 1030. 2004, i use the same unit to run sound from my emu10k1. it still sounds nice. it powers two homemade speaker enclosed dual coned automotive walmart on sale i forget who made em speakers. the 1030 is prone to intercept cb radio transmissions, and that gets annoying as i live nearby a heavily travelled truck route. it's only 13 watts RMS, but itsa quality 13 watts. it's as close to a tube amp as i'm gonna ever get.

    linux is on my desktop because i want it there. a debian install is as hard or as easy as performing a nice double clutch downshift with some deft heel toe magic from the right foot. if you want an out of the box clueless install, perhaps you want a mac. no offense to mac users intended, i can't afford a mac. i have three beige boxes and an xbox on my home network, my NAT server issa headless P75 (overclocked to a hunnert) with 64 megs-O-ram anda 1 gig HDD running debian woody, my desktop issa athlon t-bird 1 gig with six something M ram and two HDDs (60 gig total)running debian sid, my newest additon issa nondescript P166 with 32 megs-O-ram and a 2 gig HDD running debian woody, and my xbox that was hacked last winter with xebian. for now its cuz i can. i like free beer and free speech. at some point i'd like to give back to the community that makes this possible, but i am just a lowly joe sixpack user.

    a linux distro gives you ALL the tools. downside, you have to learn how to use them. upside, you go to a how to mirror and it's all documented. and reading a linux how to doesn't make you feel stupid, just uninformed. it'll take some time, jeeze, you can't point and click at a chainsaw and expect that damn 150 year old dead oak tree three feet from the house to just fall where you want it to without some kinda knowledge. i don't want my linux distro dumbed down.

    i demand a rite of passage. i went throught it. and i am just a joe six pack construction worker. free beer usually means there's work involved. i have a choice. i made it. it works for me. YMMV.

    there is a lot of evil lurking right outside my ADSL connection. i don't care to infringe upon anyone's first ammendment rights. but conversely, i should be able to filter out what i will allow inside my house. i have the tools, it's nice that now i can read how to use them.

    right now i have an eleven and twelve year grandson logging into my debian sid desktop to google for xbox game cheats. what they can get away with on their parent's computers is one thing. what i will let them get away with is gonna be a lot less.

    plus, i only had three kids, but i have seven (due to be nine by the end of summer) grandkids. they're learning how to use *nix on grampa's linux box. and grampa has an xbox that can run xebian as well. my kids are hopelessly locked into m$, i sorta hope i can just do a leap frog deally...

    I rememder seeing Caldera Linux in Compusa. (For some reason, I seem to remember reading it was based on Debian, of all distributions. Maybe I'm wrong here, tho'.)

    caldera linux was rpm based. i know this cuz caldera linux was my first distro. it came bundled with a well written idiots manual. i learned a lot. i learned enough to leave caldera for debian. i have never looked back. although i still ocassionally look up arcane commands in the book.

    i don't mind mowing my 1/4 acre every five days in the summer months, but the damn leaves in the fall from all my mature oak and walnut trees take forever to corral and haul up to the top of the hill that is my backyard. i'd rather have a robotic leaf blower that would blow all that stuff into my neighbors' yards like during the day when they're at work.

    i've used win95, win98SE and winme. my desktop runs debian sid because i got fed up trying to learn how to fix all the ms OS maladies. i figured i could spend the same amount of time learning how to use a linux distro. my old P75 is now my humble LAN's NAT/gateway/firewall running debian woody. quite frankly, i don't hate microsoft anymore since i stopped using their products. plus i've saved myself a lot of money. how can i hate when i'm happy with my choice?

    If the Xbox Next is worth buying (time will tell) and it's not backward compatible. That means I will have to have 4 controllers for my original xbox (4 player Halo)

    i've tried to maintain four xpads for my xbox. i'm down to two that sorta work. christ, at thirty bux a pop they should last longer that four months. yeah, so i have to share the damn thing with kids, but duh, itsa game console. i'd spend fourty bux onna xpad that wasn't all cheap injection molded plastic (ok, the PC board and assorted components don't count).

    cuz my current xbox is only a coupla years old. i did the mechassault exploit to load it with xebian, but the grandkids insist it also play games. i have a large collection of current xbox games.

    what i don't need is a collection of increasingly more expensive game consoles.
