Ow, synthesized orchestral music is not the most pleasant thing to listen to, even when it is real classical music. However, i have just the idea they need. Why not use a real orchestra?

For example, ids ported q3 uses OSS, wich is kind of deprecated now and doesnt even work with all soundcard drivers (i have to hack it through esddsp to get mmap-stuff to work), with the program released as free software anyone is allowed to make it work with ALSA, JACK, or whatever they see fit.
Not really. The difference is that you DO have the ability to check through the code, and some people will probably do so. I'm not saying that it is always safe, but it is indeed much safer than running random executables wich could contain anything without anyone being able to detect it.

In my opinion the biggest issue isnt that the program is windows only, it is that its non-free. I wouldnt trust my government to run code on my computer that i dont know shit what it does.

Just imagine the enormous amount of "wasted" cycles that could be utilized. If everyone that participated in this network installed software that was capable of computing certain things, maybe for rendering or compiling or whatever. Then when you wanted something compiled you just sent out lil chunks of work and the global net of cpus could compute this and send you back the results.
A ratio system could even be used to prevent misuse, like, the more cycles you contribute, the more you can use.
