I'm kind of surprised that this doesn't seem to have impacted their stock, not even a little bit. I guess people are waiting on their earnings, expected today. If you think about it, the only thing this "script kiddy" did, in the big picture, to your network was make it stronger. Sure, he made you work hard for a weekend, but, if you're network was weak enough to go down from this in the first place, it was going to happen eventually. And now, I'm sure, you got the network back up, and at sufficient enough strength to withstand the same kind of attack in the future.

That is true, and is what I pointed out to the client - 'you may be in a bit of a huff from this happening, but you are better from it.'

In this particular case I was brought in as a consultant by a nonprofit organization, so I didn't charge my usual rates. What really ticked me off was law enforcement's unwillingness to help a non-corporate entity solely because of a lack of sufficient financial damage. That's not what they're about - making money - but they were significantly crippled operationaly, and needy people were hurt by it.
As a side note, another aspect that pissed me off about the episode is why it happened: an older gentleman that does most of their tech stuff thought he would give linux a try as their file server in a windows environment and was delighted that he was able to get it configured and working by himself without much pain.... well, he simply had no idea that the red hat installation had opened up ports he just didn't need (or what a port is for that matter) and that by default it is pretty freaking insecure after installation. So he got a bad impression of linux. I explained that NT was flawed by a factor more, but it ticked me off a bit. Open bsd and linuxppc seem to have the right idea in having most services basically shut down until someone comes along and enables them. Mandrake, I've noticed, has a security level setup as part of their install - I hope to see this kind of thing become more of a standard....

I'm really digging this laptop. Got mandrake 7.0 up at linux expo and thought i'd try it out - quite nice on this laptop. Only a couple problems. The modem is a winmodem, so I'll have to replace that. For some reason, when I connect a monitor to it x won't display on the second monitor. Anyone know why this is? Haven't really started looking into why yet. Had to run sndconfig to get sound up - the soundconfig utility that comes with mandrake didn't pick up on the neomagic. Otherwise, it's great. Oh, there is one more thing - the thing has 2 pixels that are always red. Called sony and they say that's standard and wouldn't do an exchange for less than 10 percent of the display being hosed! Not really a big deal. This is the first time I've had a dual boot machine, so I've been messing with wine - very hip. This model has a dvd, so I guess I'll start nosing around for dvd on linux stuff. anyone got any clues? i saw there was a booth at expo in .org pavillion, but never really got a chance to talk to those people.

One thing to keep in mind is that 90% of new artists fail, and that they do not get lucrative contracts because they are so risky. The few who do succeed make up for the rest.
There's no 'making up for' about it - failed deals make a great write off for labels. What I'd be interested in seeing is how many bands that sign a deal and get and advance actually make it through the production process to get a release out. I'd bet, just on observation, that something like 20% of the recording deals in the last 10 years have failed before release.
I don't know the stats, but of the successful artists out there, the ones that have come away strongest, financially, are the ones who were shrewd when getting their publishing deals together. Like Michael Jackson - (who owns some percentage of the Beales music now) - he had mega hits in the 80's that he (I believe) has principal publishing on, but think of the early seventies with the Jackson 5 - those kids didn't make shit for their efforts besides unit sales - it was the Motown publishing machine that garnered performance royalties - and still does today.

9.0 should work though... the CD's not bootable?
Nope, no system folder to boot from, BUT -this is from a GM that a friend that works for apple brought over. I'm going to go ahead and buy it - still running 8.6 on my macos side and should upgrade anyway. Thanks again- I'll get it going, by cracky! The only bummer about this is that at home I'm locked down to 1 ip address dues to the pipe50 router being thus restricted, but I suppose I could use IP Masq on the linux side to get the mac-on-linux deal on the network. That could be interesting.
