So they can get all the information from the OBDII and remotely shut off the car? This is a dream come true for auto emissions standards enforcement. Imagine driving along and a spark plug wire fails. You hardly notice it but your CO emissions go just over the legal limit. After repeated warnings the State remotely disables your car until it is towed to a repair shop and fixed. You've just been 0wned by a very small shell script.
I really don't get why everyone is saying the nano is too pricey.
Two reasons:
1. Knee-jerk reaction because ten years ago everything from Apple cost more than the x86 world. While this is still true for Apple only replacement parts Macs now compete pricewise with name brand PCs.
2. The Nano's price is higher than the more common 1g MP3/WMA players out there. Unfair to compare? Of course since the nano has more memory, color screen and is much more durable than similar memory sized HD based players.
Once again Apple releases a great product that will take the people a while to understand how great it is. Just like the first Mac, LaserWriter, HyperCard or iMovie. IMO the only thing missing is the ability to plug it directly into a USB port like the iPod shuffle but I suspect someone in the aftermarket will correct that issue.
As for your 3G iPod I'd keep it as a portable HD (which can be extremely handy) and get the nano. I suspect you won't get what your 3G is really worth so why bother selling?
While some will construed my comments as "Apple fanboy" they're realistic. Apple makes really good stuff. Sometimes they mess up and IMO they're too restrictive (like killing off 3rd party themes and burying HyperCard) but that's for another time.
So the article talks about how technology fails and social engineering takes over but how is it new? Kevin
worked this trick like a pro twenty years ago.
Dr Finch says criminals have told her how they now look over people's shoulders to see a person's pin being entered on a keypad and then attempt to steal the card at a later date.
The fact is in the US felony charges are used the vast majority of the time as a club to coerce a plea agreement to a lesser felony or misdemeanor charge rather than a State's Attorney's honest desire to prosecute a real felonious crime.
IMO the only reason the "Kutztown 13" got off without a conviction is because of the multitude of complaints generated by the Internet and not out of any "common sense" of any prosecutor. The criminal justice in the US is like a giant meat grinder where the innocent and guilty get ground up together and spit out the other end. "Justice" is rarely a factor.
IMO Nintendo could gain some new users by partly openning up the DS. It's clear Sony will most likely never open up the PSP.
-----
A request for Nintendo to open up the GB DS
(BTW, is any of this even possible?)
(Please note that while there is
some comparisons between the Nintendo DS (DS) and the Sony Personal
PlayStation (PSP) my comments should not be construed as a judgment
on which unit has better games or is better for gaming. My comments
and ideas are limited to the DS' ability to be expanded past it's
current usage, which could possibly expand it's total customer base,
and not about corporately generated games. While I mention Python as
the interpreter of choice, Ruby should also be strongly considered.
BTW, I know the name sucks but I'm sure someone will come up with
something better.)
The "App-Yan"
I propose that Nintendo makes or
allow someone else to make a device that fits into the DS game slot
on the DS which allows users to run Python applications. Applications
would be stored and loaded from a removable SD card.
The "App-Yan" parts:
Hardware:
External
housing design and dimensions: the dimensions would very similar
to the "Play-Yan", Nintendo's mp3/mpeg4 player that fits into the
GBA slot on the DS.
SD or
SDIO slot: Python scripts and/or related data files would be
stored here. No propriety software should be required to copy files
to and from the SD card. Open data standards should be used whenever
possible. Also somewhat similar to the "Play-Yan".
>256M
non removable internal flash memory: This would be used for the
storage of the Python interpreter et al and, at the user's choice,
Python scripts or related data.
A/D
converter on the "professional" model: It's about
expanding the DS and a "professional" version with multiple A/D
converters would expand the DS' use, for example, for automated data
collection.
Software:
Python
interpreter: the Python interpreter, a signed Nintendo
application, would be stored on the App-Yan's internal flash memory.
It could be updated by Nintendo to address security flaws and bugs.
Scripts could be run allowing for a text output or with a full GUI.
GUI objects could be accessed from either the DS' internal GUI
widgets or from standardized custom widgets accompanied with the
interpreter.
Signed
script validator: Some groups have the need to ensure their
scripts arrive at the user's DS unmodified. A built in public key
signature system could be used to insure scripts arrive as they were
intended.
Why the DS?
The DS, like previous versions of
the GB, is well designed and a nearly indestructible device. They
have been successfully used in environments that normally would kill
off similar electronic devices. The closest example of a device that
can stand up to similar abuse would possible be a "hardened" PDA
(either Palm of PocketPC OS based in a custom enclosure) costing at
least four times the cost of the DS/AY (DS with an "App-Yan"
device). The DS' low cost, durability and touch screens make it an
ideal candidate for this project over other portable devices. The use
of a GB for nongaming use is hardly new. The Singer Izek sewing
machine (now out of production) used a GB as a stitch and pattern
controller.
What's the benefit to Nintendo?
This project would expand the
current customer base and places used. Many would say the
"holy grail" of a portable gaming system is to allow for its use
in a public school setting. This might be possible using the
"dynamically generated exams" example sited below. While the DS
performs well as a portable gaming system added uses would generate
additional console sales which would generate added games sales.
While Nintendo is still the king of the overall handheld gaming
market, the Sony PSP has presented itself as extremely strong
competition. With Sony's le
Yes, browsers change faster than the archived information. I'm tired of playing this "cat and mouse" game with browser updates causing one to reedit html files. The US Copyright Office should consider adopting html standards. If MS doesn't want to play along then they can't go screw themselves. Here's the standard I think they should use:
GM built the EV-1
, a nice electric car that was loved by most of their users (not owners since all were leased). At the end of the leases GM refused to sell any of them, instead deciding to crushthem.
I'm not saying everyone should drive electric but give people a choice. The fuel cost was estimated to be.5 to.3 of the cost of gas engine. The fight against global warming took a step back when GM killed the EV-1.
Hybrids are a step in the right direction but IMO electric cars also need to be sold.
As far as I can see it only has usb ports and piggybacks off of another computer. Of course an usb to ethernet converter (yes, never a good idea) would help.
There's always the Linksys NSLU-2 with ethernet for $80, just add a usb drive.
Here's the real deal. FedEx doesn't want to be providing thousands to millions of boxes to people who won't be paying to use them to ship items via FedEx.
So FedEx should pay the guy to build a cottage out of UPS boxes.
FedEx boxes are one of few supplies in an office that no one tracks so am I the only one thinking "I really need a couch in the cubicle?" Guess I can make a pillow from a trash can liner and packing peanuts.
So Sen. Carper wants to start a huge new federal tax and give it to the police? Has anyone else noticed that as your local city or town cuts back on money for everything from schools, road repair, public recreation areas (like public pools) to libraries the police are the only ones not only not getting hit with these budget cuts, they are the only ones consistently seeing budget increases?
In my city the Chief of Police makes $151k USD and his lieutenants make at least $110k USD per year. I know primary care medical doctors that don't make that kind of money.
I say we tell the police to stop messing around with their "busy work" like arresting people for simple marijuana possession (the number one reason for criminal arrest in the US) that costs the taxpayer on average >$8k USD per arrest, cut back on the number of police officers, stop buying them a new >$30k USD cruiser every two years and do some real work.
While there are a lot of good cops out there, the system that governs them is corrupt and needs major overhaul. Sen. Carper's tax is just more pork (no pun intended) for Washington to give out.
Why would Rupert Murdoch think of paying $3billion for a mostly free online service like Skype?
$3b is a lot but Skype has a large and loyal user base. They could tie in a lot of things like: legal online music sales, expanding SkypeOut and SkypeIn and banner ads in the software. With Skype expanding out of the PC (like how Motorola is adding Skype to some of their phones) it has a lot of potential.
It's a little like someone looking at buying Apple. While they have good hardware and software they are so much more. Maybe that's what Murdoch sees for the future of Skype.
As I'm sure you know most lawyers involved in a high profile case will commonly talk it up, putting the best possible face on it in public while having a different, private opinion. This is a good thing, not bad, and a realistic part of defending a client. Negative comments could quietly taint a jury pool. Imagine something like this:
But Lynn's lawyer, Jennifer Granick, confirmed that the FBI told her it was investigating her client.
Granick was quoted as saying "Oh God! Oh God! Oh God! What am I going to do? I mean this guy did something, right or wrong, and is going to end up in a dog cage at Gitmo and there isn't jack shit I can do about it!" She then crawled into the fetal position on the ground holding her briefcase like an infant child.
"I think the best thing we can do for Mike," she said, "is to help him stock up on soap-on-a-rope and cigarettes."
AFAIK, if a particular setup would violate FCC Rules and Regs, it's up to the FCC to enforce them. It's a subject that's strictly under federal regulation, not state police, not county sheriffs, not local P.Ds.
Exactly the correct answer. Yes, only a federally sworn official can enforce a federal law, not a State sworn offical, to void a conflict of interest. The guy from the Sherriff's dept. is blowing smoke and possibly a total idiot.
Before Apple, the campus was the HQ of the now-defunct Four Phase Systems.... The buidling was sufficiently damaged in the earthquake on 17 Oct 1989, that it was abandoned and eventually razed.
And such a lovely building, it's style was once described as "early penitentiary". The earthquake did us all a favor.
The US Congress could really care less about this whole GTA:SA / "Hot Coffee" issue. They're using it to distract the American populous from and avoid dealing with the real and critical issues facing them:
- a huge budget deficit
- thousands of people without health insurance dying each year from treatable illnesses
- a war in Iraq and Afghanistan that at this point looks like it has no end, killing thousands of US soldiers (both KIAs and other theater related deaths) and over 100k (by some counts) Iraqis
- "Plan Columbia" that is pissing off most Columbians, causing everything from birth defects to cancer and destabilizing a good chunk of South America
- Decent, full-time manufacturing jobs being replaced with poor paying, part-time service jobs (many with no health insurance)
- the "War on Drugs" which costs over 60 billion USD each year with little to no results.
- public schools that are crumbling right before their very eyes and the best they can do is "No Child Left Behind", which is a piss poor program that is grossly underfunded.
Gay marriage yesterday, "Hot coffee" today, Bush's announcement of his SCOTUS replacement (which he'll make tonight) next week. It's all "bread and circus" to the US Congress. Most of them only care about their $158k to $203k USD paycheck and getting all the shit they can steal without getting caught.
While your warning of caution is correct it seems they don't have a trademark on "half a billion served" but do own the trademarks on the following:

I was once working for a pretty lousy company that only gave five sick days a year and after that you'd get "written up" (forget getting vacation time since it took months to approve). Unless you had a MD's note, three absents after that in the same calender year got you fired. Well, they did allow people to go funerals without a problem so I would look through the obituaries, pick out a funeral for the same day I wanted off, scan the obituary of the funeral notice, photoshop my family name in the relatives section and enjoy the day off. One summer I had so many relatives "die" the boss pushed through some vacation time (during crunch time) for me to properly "grieve". Said grieving took place on a beach on Cape Cod for a week.
For his work or just being a better human being? =)
Jobs is the Phineas Taylor Barnum of the computer world. Hertzfeld, Woz and Raskin have heart and soul, something Jobs sold off at a yard sale in the 70's. While everyone rags on Gates (as they should) Jobs IMO was cut from the same mold.
Quite unlikely but it could happen someday.
Two reasons:
1. Knee-jerk reaction because ten years ago everything from Apple cost more than the x86 world. While this is still true for Apple only replacement parts Macs now compete pricewise with name brand PCs.

It's called shoulder surfing, hardly new.
Felonies are meant to be serious crimes like "aggravated assault, arson, burglary, murder, and rape" and not minor infractions like what the "Kutztown 13" possibly did. Almost 95% of felony charges result in a guilty conviction via a plea agreement. It's rather disgusting.

If you can't create a website that works adeqautely with all browsers, then you don't deserve to be employed as a web designer.
