  2. Re:PHP and MySQL on phpstack - A TCP/IP Stack and Web Server in PHP · · Score: 1

Ah, but herein lies the point. Any novice programmer's immediate responce would be "What the hell is abstraction and why should I care?" Answer, 80% of PHP users wouldn't care. If MySQL is the database they start with it's the database they stick with. The same goes for this "use DBI;" stuff. The PHP method is drop dead intuitive, you don't have to learn anything about the language to use it. The Perl method requires knowledge of the language.

Besides, if you do want abstraction you can always get it.

Makes me wonder if the RIAA will have some way to verify that it's actually a fingerprint they're getting. Simplest circumvention method I can think of is to lock the file with a random ubiquitous object (i.e. paper clip) and then anyone can unlock it with the same object.

Unless I miss my guess there is a heck of a lot more than $10 million for whoever wins this race. If the Bush space plan works, and it may, we could well see the commercialization of space in our lifetimes. And whoever has the best and cheapest commercial transport system at that point stands to make billions and billions.

I'd be real curious to see how this handles configuration. For instance, how do you change URLs? The interface I see picture doesn't look like it's up to the task. Howbout WEP? Non-broadcasting SSIDs? I can't find any of this on the company's site. If it doesn't handle this stuff graciously it's a big pretty looking doorstop as far as I'm concerned.

Speaking as someone who wrote his own (rudimentary) spider there are other advantages (at least from my perspective) to crawling only a few of your pages at a time. It's a very simple way for a small spider to get to index a wide array of sites instead of being stuck on one huge (read: a phpBB forum or CVS repository) site. However the more specific robots.txt could also be beneficial to the spider too, as right now my spider (or any spider) can only guess what the webmaster wants and therefore stands a good chance of being evicted if it guesses wrong. About 18% of sites have disallow rules for all spiders (based on my limited crawls), not a good sign.

Exactly the kind of work robots are best suited for. Never sleep, one time investment, never get careless, harder to kill, integrated fully with the alarm system.
