    What this does show is that Democracy is a totally flawed and broken way to select leaders for a nation. The same people who signed the death star petition are also allowed to vote in general elections. Is it a wonder we then end up with such destructive governments as those headed by Obama, Bush and Clinton? No, its not.

    BTW, this is why a clock is divided into 60 seconds and minutes, because 60 can be divided by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. If you are having to chop something up into smaller pieces, it really helps to use a numerical base other than 10 for that division. For a quick & dirty system, base 12 really is very useful, hence why things are often sold by the dozen for the same reason.

    You do know you are making an absolute guess now right? There are no sumerian documents hinting that they used the 360 degree system for geometry and time measurement because it made for easy division.

    I once had my brand new Hugo Boss deodorant (which incidentally is the last non-food product I have ever purchased at an air port) confiscated, because the TSA felt that it probably was a bomb in disguise. I agree they have not stopped any terrorists at all, but that TSA agent was pretty pleased with himself and I believe in his book that made it: "terrorists: 0, TSA: 1".

    If the technology is out there to do this safely and securely, how could it possibly be a bad thing. These being used at major gatherings - Olympics, Superbowl, World Cup - all round the world these should be able to be used given the current state of the world we live in.

    Its also been proven perfectly safe to be frisked. So I support having a TSA frisking agent at every street corner.
    Its also safe to be interrogated. So I support having a TSA interrogator in every public place that goes around and interrogate people at will.
    It is safe to have a government GPS tracker installed under your skin, so I support that too.

    The ten thousand dollar question: If I'm willing to sacrifice liberty for security, what do I deserve?

    If you are doing this because you feel a need to satisfy your geek cravings, then by all means, buy networked video cameras, motion sensors, night vision cameras, set up dedicated servers doing nothing but image-recognition and audio analysis, and you can probably get some kind of solution up that will record and track everything that happens in and around your house or apartment.
    When and if the local meth-head burglar shows up to rob your house he will probably not even notice the fancy security system before he rips the computer running it all out of the wall socket and carries it out to his getaway vehicle.

    If geeky satisfaction is not your goal but rather real security, then follow the advice that many people here have already pointed out:
    1. Get a gun.
    2. Put up signs warning that you have a gun and am familiar with its point and click mode of operation.


    If you want BOTH geeky satisfaction and real security you could hook your face scanning computer up TO your guns, so it automatically shoots everyone it deems villainous. But don't come crying here if your system pops your mom when she comes to do your laundry, if that happens you can only blame your own poor face-scanning-programming skills, not advice you got on the slashdot!

    Its just like this one time, when I went to school, we also got our own storage space on an old NT server. I think we had about 5 megabytes each. We were not allowed to put porn (or hacking tools, I learned the hard way) on this share.
    So wtf is new about giving students access to such share, except for that they will make accessible over the internet, not just the LAN?

    If its the fact that it will be surveyed that put it on the /. frontpage - surveillance is nothing new either. I was not allowed to store neither 'una_bomber.exe' (mailbomber) or 'aggressor.exe' (malicious packet generator) on my share, and the sysadmin let me know about this, so I renamed the programs to 'school_project_may.doc' and such which defeated the surveillance scheme. But regardless, how can this be /. frontpage material?

    For those who didn't know, Xapian, the search engine he used for this, is really awesome. Its very fast, stable, actively developed and packs some pretty impressive features. Its written in c++, but has bindings for Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. If you need an embedded search function on a site, you should check it out.

    I've used it for over 2 years on various sites and am really pleased with it.

    The article could have been more revealing I agree. The guy is not just a passer-by though, he's a journalist from wtprn, a radio and blog news site.
    The cop is obviously an idiot, and that proves my point. I get worried when a nation arms idiots with badges and automatic rifles (and now soon probably also puke-sticks, non-lethal weapons that even idiots will understand will be easier to get away with using than the rifles).
    The fact that he says he wants to intimidate people, and the fact that he has forgotten the oath all police men swear (to serve the public) should worry anyone.

    I don't know about you, but with the Patriot Act I & II, presidential directive 51 where the president generously grants himself dictator powers in case of an emergency - oh btw, the president gets to define what an emergency is - it does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling to know that the very same cops that stops lawful and calm demonstrators soon may get a new public suppression pukestick to play with.

    You are wrong. In chess, you know exactly where you have your opponent. Anything he can possibly do can be computed, any strategy he could use could be predicted. It's all about being able to calculate and predict, which a computer is excellent at. In poker you have no sure way of knowing exactly where you have your opponent, you can only guess based on his actions or inactions what he might be sitting on. This is beyond simple mathematical calculations and hence it's MUCH harder than chess.

With more grammatical errors and spelling typos than a retarded 4 year old would make, you ought to be discussing the latest boybands and perhaps Paris Hiltons stay in the slammer instead.

    I fail to see how something that happened in Europe over 60 years ago has anything at all to do with the upcoming US presidential election.

    Correction: Ron Paul believes the US should adhere to the constitution, which makes him a conservative. A neocon, like GWB and his ilk, who wants nothing more than to disintegrate the country by gutting the constitution, opening the borders wide, and fighting private wars are about as conservative as Bill Clinton is faithful.

    Go read up on the now declassified documents about the attack on USS Liberty. You might want to think twice before assuming other nations are friends, especially Israel, who's intelligence agencies motto is 'by deception thou shalt do war'.

    Name ONE other person running for presidential candidate - either rep or dem will do - that opposes internet regulation and taxation and other wasteful taxes please.
    And by wasteful taxes I will assume you are also talking about the income tax, which is completely consumed by paying off the interest (not the principal, the principal is impossible to pay off) of the national debt which is money borrowed from a private bank which has been given permission to create this money out of thin air.
    Surely you agree a huge tax paying for a debt that is mathematically impossible to ever pay off is a wasteful tax.
    Like I said, name one other candidate that opposes wasteful taxes, other than Ron Paul.
