  1. Re:Linspire did this over a year ago on Mandriva Linux to Offer Online Music Service · · Score: 1

Yes they did... and thank you for pointing that out. I think it's important to note that Linspire was the FIRST to have a built in music store through Lsongs. This point alone makes the title of this article incorrect. Finally... the Lsongs music store isn't only independent artists as I've found signed artists in there as well. And you are absolutely correct in stating that all of the music is DRM free. Thanks again One Louder for pointing this out.

  2. Re:This is the summary on Under a Big Blue Shadow · · Score: 5, Insightful

No surprise here as HP has historically had a tight connection with Microsoft. IBM has little to lose when touting their support for Linux. They don't like Microsoft anyway. HP on the other hand, with their huge PC division and Intel server division, has much more to lose. That's probably why you don't hear HP's executives talking up Linux as much as Big Blue's.

  3. Nice... on Microsoft To Offer Virus Defense · · Score: 5, Funny

It's like paying the mob for "protection" when you pay Microsoft for "security". Thanks but no thanks. I've seen enough Soprano episodes to know what can happen when you deal with the mob.

  4. Question... on Palm OS To Run On Linux · · Score: 3, Interesting

So, forgive my lack of Linux knowledge but, will Palm OS on linux be like KDE or Gnome on linux in the sense that it's a GUI that sits on linux? I'm just trying to understand how this will work and why it's a good idea.

  5. Re:11b or not 11b on Palm Finally Announces SD WiFi Card · · Score: 1

It's probably due to power restrictions. My guess is that the amount of power needed to run 802.11g is what's keeping it off the Palm and PocketPC right now. Can anyone verify this?

I play games all the time on Linspire and it works great. Also, I've purchased a licensed DVD player for $4.95 USD and installed it using Linspire's Click and Run. One click later I was watching DVD's legally and without any trouble. Linspire is a GREAT distribution! Have you ever even used Linspire to substantiate your claim that something will go wrong?

  13. /. users can be hypocrites on Is Dell Just Testing the Market? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'd like to know how many /. users have acutally used Linspire/Lindows. It seems to me that there is a large negative cloud that follows this distribution but the cloud isn't substantiated by actual use. The main negative issue that seems to always come up is the "runs as root" issue. Well, that's been resolved. When you first log in, you can choose to create a user other than root. Plus, look at the bigger picture. Linspire is designed with the END USER in mind. Not your typical linux user who likes to re-install their system frequently or likes to wrestle with dependencies when installing applications. I've been using Linspire since last November. It hasn't been perfect but I'll tell you, it's been the best linux distro I've ever used. The combination of a Dell system and an easy-to-use DESKTOP linux distribution is win-win. Heck, any PC being sold with linux preloaded is a win for the open source community. Remember, it's not a competition between linux distros, it's a competition between Linux, MacOS, and MS Windows.

Switching to Linspire (aka Lindows) for home use was a good decision. The problems you are experiencing with the Internet Suite (aka Mozilla) are well documented within the user support forums. I would suggest you go to the forums and post your problems there. I've had several issues with Linspire which were fixed within one day with the help of someone in the forums. Here's a link to the forum: https://forum.linspire.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?Ca t= By-the-way, I was really glad that eWeek recommended Linspire as the distro to go with for home use. 15. Long term on E3 - Sony Drops PS2 To $149, Shows PSP, Hints At PS3 · · Score: 1

I wonder if in the long term, the PSP will have any impact on the Gameboy. Many in the past have tried to dethrone the king but have failed. Look at the only handheld gaming device that had any market share, the Sega Game Gear. It was ahead of its time with a color screen but it was huge and ate batteries one after another. I'm sure the PSP will have some following but I don't think, in the long run, it'll make much of an impact to Nintendo's stronghold.

  16. Re:Wow on IBM To Announce Web-Based Desktop Apps · · Score: 1, Insightful

I think IBM can pull it off. They had a really great product(s) in the Lotus Suite of applications. This includes Word Pro, 1-2-3, etc. This is a good strategy for IBM especially when it comes to linux. I use OO.o but I think it would be great to have another offering, especially in the workplace, to keep this market competitive in terms of features and price.

Maybe the long term solution is for me to store everything on a very large external harddrive.
